Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Practice navigation, basic file operations, command help, and permissions in a temporary folder in your home directory. There is no official, universal “Linux Week 2” syllabus or fixed number of hours; this is a practical sequence based on beginner exercises and course topics.
Start with the terminal, shell, and your location
A terminal window lets you interact with a shell, the program that interprets the commands you type. Beginners often use “terminal,” “shell,” and “command line” interchangeably, but they are different parts of the setup. The distinction matters less than knowing where commands run and what they can affect.
The shell has a current working directory. Run pwd to print it before working with files. Relative paths are interpreted from that location, while a path beginning with / starts from the root of the filesystem. Ubuntu’s command-line tutorial introduces these ideas alongside navigation and file operations; most of its content applies across distributions, though some steps are Ubuntu-specific.
Use a dedicated practice folder under your home directory so experiments stay separate from system files. In a terminal, you can create and enter one with:

mkdir -p ~/linux-practice
cd ~/linux-practice
pwd
Check that the printed path ends in linux-practice before creating or changing files. From there, compare these navigation commands:
cdmoves to another directory.cd ..moves to the parent directory.cd ~returns to your home directory.cd /moves to the filesystem root.
After each move, run pwd so you can see how your location changes.
Practice the first commands on files you can replace
Make a few directories and text files in your practice folder, then inspect and move those examples. Keep names simple while you learn how paths work; later, use quotation marks around names containing spaces.

mkdir notes archive
printf 'First practice filenSecond linen' > notes/example.txt
ls
ls -la
cat notes/example.txt
cp notes/example.txt archive/copy.txt
mv archive/copy.txt archive/renamed.txt
Here, mkdir creates directories, printf writes sample text, ls lists directory contents, cat displays a file, cp makes a copy, and mv renames or moves it. The > operator redirects output into a file, replacing that file’s existing contents if it already exists. After each operation, use ls or cat to check the result rather than assuming it worked.
Combine commands to answer a question
Once individual commands feel less mysterious, try using one command’s output as another command’s input. For example, count the lines in the sample file and save the result in your practice folder:
wc -l notes/example.txt
wc -l notes/example.txt > line-count.txt
cat line-count.txt
A pipe, written as |, sends one command’s output to another without creating an intermediate file. This example counts the entries shown for your home directory:

ls ~ | wc -l
The result is a count of the lines produced by ls, not necessarily a definitive count of every file in every subdirectory. Ubuntu’s beginner tutorial progresses from file operations to chaining commands and pipes, which makes it a useful companion for these exercises.
Look up commands instead of guessing
When a command or option is unfamiliar, read its documentation before adding flags or combining it with other operations. Two common starting points are:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
command --helpfor a quick summary of a command’s options.man commandfor a fuller manual page, where available.
Replace command with the command you want to understand—for example, ls --help or man ls. The man interface is often navigated with the keyboard; press q to leave it. Manuals and option details can vary by distribution or command version. Ubuntu’s terminal tutorial covers manual pages and help alongside file operations and permissions.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
If output surprises you, stop and inspect the command’s documentation and your current directory before trying a more complicated version. Learning to investigate is more useful than memorizing flags without understanding their effects.
Read permissions before changing them
Run ls -l on your practice files to see permission information. Linux permissions describe what the file’s owner, its group, and other users may do. The familiar permission letters include r for read, w for write, and x for execute. The listing also shows ownership information.
If you experiment with chmod, restrict changes to files you created for practice and check the result with ls -l. Do not use chmod 777 as a general fix: it grants read, write, and execute permissions broadly, including to other users. Ubuntu’s permissions guide explains the owner, group, and others model and warns against world-writable permissions.

Use administrator privileges sparingly
Do ordinary work as your regular user. The sudo command runs an operation with administrator privileges, so an unfamiliar command used with sudo can affect the whole system rather than just your practice files. Before running it, understand what the command will change and why elevated privileges are needed.
When installing software, prefer your distribution’s established repositories when they provide the software. If you use another installation method, verify that it comes from the software’s official source. Ubuntu’s command-line guidance discusses administrator privileges and cautions about installation sources.
Before removing anything, confirm your location with pwd and inspect the exact contents of the practice directory. Avoid pasting commands you do not understand, especially those involving sudo, downloads, permission changes, or recursive deletion.
Follow a flexible Week 2 practice sequence
This sequence is an editorial way to organize beginner exercises, not a published curriculum or a tested schedule. Repeat any step until you can explain what it does and what files it could affect.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Reorient: Open a terminal, run
pwd, and comparecd,cd ..,cd ~, and a path beginning with/. - Make and inspect: In your practice folder, create directories and text files. Use
ls,ls -la,cat,cp, andmv; inspect the results after each operation. - Read and combine output: Try
wc -l, redirect output to a practice file, and use a pipe such asls ~ | wc -l. - Investigate: Use
command --helpfor a quick option summary andman commandfor a fuller reference when available. - Inspect permissions: Read
ls -loutput and identify the owner, group, and permission bits. If you trychmod, use only a practice file. - Finish safely: Check your location and the directory contents before removing practice files. Do not use administrator privileges or destructive commands you have not understood.
There is no evidence-based hour count or mastery target attached to this sequence. Familiarity develops through practice; being able to predict what a command will affect is a better checkpoint than finishing on a particular day.
