Hard disk defect management is the drive-internal process of identifying defective or marginal media locations, recording them, and avoiding or limiting their use. A drive may reassign an affected block to spare media, but that does not recover data already damaged or make a drive with signs of failure safe to keep using.
How hard disk defect management works
Disk surfaces are not guaranteed to be entirely free of defects: some are found during manufacturing, while others may appear after a drive is in service. The drive tracks affected locations and can substitute spare media for a defective location through reallocation, also called remapping. The [FOI report on hard-disk defects](https://www.forensicfocus.com/articles/hard-disk-defects/) describes this as a way to handle defects without visible loss of disk capacity; the exact behavior depends on the drive.
Reallocation changes how the drive maps a location; it does not restore the contents of a damaged sector. Defect management is also distinct from error recovery. When an operational read or write error occurs, a drive may attempt recovery, and the procedure can depend on its configured recovery parameters.
When defects are found and how they are recorded
In the cited Seagate SCSI documentation, defect lists distinguish defects identified at different stages. These are examples from particular SCSI manuals, not universal names or procedures for every ATA, SATA, SAS, or modern drive.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Stage or category | Record in cited SCSI documentation | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Manufacturing | Primary (P) list | In the Seagate Elite 47 manual, defects identified during initial factory formatting are recorded on the P list, and known defects are reallocated. The manual says this product’s P list is not altered after factory formatting. Seagate Elite 47 Product Manual, Rev. A |
| Certification or formatting | Certification (C) list; formatting-related entries may also appear in the G list, depending on the product and operation | Seagate’s SCSI interface manual identifies C as a defect category. Its description of G-list entries includes defects found during formatting. The role of a list depends on the documented command and product. Seagate SCSI Interface Product Manual |
| Supplied by the host | Data (D) list | The same Seagate SCSI manual identifies D defects as data supplied by the initiator (host). This is a documented SCSI category, not a general list name for all drives. Seagate SCSI Interface Product Manual |
| Found after manufacture | Growth (G) list | In the cited Seagate documentation, the G list tracks later defects; entries may result from reassignment commands, formatting, or automatic drive reallocation. A Sun system handbook similarly describes G-list entries for flaws found after formatting and successful REASSIGN BLOCKS operations. Seagate SCSI Interface Product Manual; Sun System Handbook |
Defect management is not the same as bad-block handling by an operating system
Drive-internal defect management records and handles media locations below the filesystem. An operating system or filesystem can separately mark blocks as unusable, but that software-level action is not the same mechanism as a drive’s internal remapping. A reference definition describes defect management as preventing disk data errors by invalidating bad sectors; read that as a simplified description of handling media defects, not a guarantee that all data errors are prevented.
Can a computer inspect or change a drive’s defect lists?
Access depends on the drive’s interface and commands. In the cited Seagate SCSI products, a host (called an initiator in SCSI terminology) can request defect information with READ DEFECT DATA. Documentation for those products also describes REASSIGN BLOCKS. The Sun handbook says the initiator cannot change or erase the P list, while G-list entries can include successful reassignment operations. These examples should not be assumed to apply to every drive or interface.

“P-list” is especially context-dependent: Seagate’s openSeaChest glossary uses it for the Primary Defect List in a SCSI context and also notes its use for Pending Defect List in another context. Check the specific drive’s documentation before interpreting the term. The existence of a defect list does not mean ordinary user software can inspect hidden sectors or recover their contents.

What defect management does—and does not—tell you
- It handles media locations: recording defects and, where supported, redirecting access to spare media.
- It does not guarantee data recovery: remapping a location is not the same as recovering data that was already unreadable.
- It does not prove a drive is healthy: defect handling is one internal mechanism, not assurance against future failure.
- Its terminology is implementation-specific: the cited P, C, D, and G lists and SCSI commands are examples from named documentation, not rules for all hard disks.
