What the 2026 Pune figure means
The reported total is 92 scientists affiliated with institutions in Pune. It refers to appearances in the 2026 list, not a count of all researchers working in the city. The Indian Express says this edition evaluates scientific impact using research and citations from 2025.

The newspaper describes the ranking as using citation-based indicators and a composite citation score. That summary does not establish that the list measures every dimension of research quality, such as teaching, mentoring, local impact or the significance of work beyond citation counts.
Which Pune institutions have reported counts?
The Indian Express gives counts for several institutions. These are report-attributed numbers, not an independently audited tally, and they should not be treated as a ranking of institutional quality. The report does not provide comparable totals for each institution’s researchers or faculty.

It does not state counts for those organizations in its text.

It is therefore a city-wide tally across different institutions and fields rather than a result belonging to a single university or discipline.
Sundeep Salvi’s respiratory-system ranking
The Indian Express reports that Sundeep Salvi ranked 41st globally in the Respiratory System subfield in the 2026 single-year ranking. The article says the subfield had 71,926 researchers and identifies Salvi as the highest-ranked Indian in it. These are newspaper-reported rank and population figures, not independently verified against the original dataset.

Salvi, founder of the PURE Foundation, told The Indian Express: “What the Stanford-Elsevier data demonstrate is the extraordinary breadth and global reach of the scientific research being undertaken in the city today. The presence of 92 Pune-based scientists among the world’s top 2% is a remarkable achievement, not for any one institution, but for the entire scientific ecosystem of Pune,”
He also said: “The diversity of disciplines represented is particularly encouraging. Pune’s scientists are contributing to fundamental physics and astronomy, chemistry, materials science, artificial intelligence, climate science, medicine, public health and many other areas,” These statements are Salvi’s assessment of the result; they do not independently establish what the ranking measures.
