Switching to a Chromebook can simplify everyday computing if your work fits web apps, Google services, and the Android apps available on ChromeOS. You can bring over synced Chrome settings, use selected tools offline, and choose from laptop and convertible designs. It is not a drop-in replacement for every Windows or Mac program, local-file workflow, or peripheral, so check your must-have software and the specific Chromebook’s update schedule before buying.
1. Start with a familiar Google account
When you sign in and have Chrome sync enabled, bookmarks, settings, and extensions can follow you to a Chromebook. Google’s switching guide describes this as a way to get started with familiar browser data—not a full migration of every desktop application and file.
Plan separately for local documents, photos, and other files. Back them up or make them available through a cloud or storage source before changing computers; signing into Chrome does not automatically move everything stored on the old device.
2. Use familiar web productivity apps
Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Meet, Docs, Sheets, and Slides are among the Google services available on Chromebooks. Google also says Microsoft 365 web apps are accessible, though some Microsoft 365 functions require a subscription. See Google’s overview of Chromebook apps.

- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
This works well if your routine is centered on a browser and cloud-based documents. Before switching, check any essential desktop-only or specialist software—such as a particular editing, engineering, accounting, or development application—against its ChromeOS or web-app support. A web version may not offer all the features you rely on in a Windows or Mac desktop program.
3. Keep some work moving offline
A lost connection does not have to stop every task. Google documents offline use for Gmail and Docs, and its switching guide also lists Sheets, Calendar, Keep, and saved web pages as offline options.
Offline support is selective and usually needs preparation: enable the relevant offline setting, download or save content, and allow any required setup to finish while you are connected. Some features also depend on available Drive storage. Do not assume that any website, cloud file, or streaming service will remain usable without internet access.

4. Spend less time managing operating-system updates
ChromeOS automatically checks for and downloads operating-system updates when the Chromebook is online. You may still need to restart to finish installing an update, but you do not have to manage the same routine of manually searching for OS updates. Google explains the process and model-specific schedules in its Chromebook update schedule guidance.
To check a device’s schedule, open Settings > About ChromeOS > Additional details. The end date is specific to the model, making it a useful check when comparing new or used Chromebooks.
5. Get security features built into ChromeOS
Google describes ChromeOS as using automatic updates, verified boot, and security chips in most newer Chromebooks. These mechanisms are intended to help protect the system, but they are not a guarantee that a device is immune to every threat.

Google’s US switching page states that, “As of May 2025 there has been no evidence of any documented, successful virus attack on ChromeOS.” That is Google’s dated vendor statement, based on its monitoring of national and internal databases—not an independent audit or a promise of future immunity. The statement appears on Google’s Switch to Chromebook page.
6. Benefit from a stated 10-year update policy
Google says Chromebooks receive 10 years of automatic updates, but the applicable schedule depends on the device. Check the exact model’s final update date rather than treating the policy as ten years from the day you purchase it. Google’s update schedule page explains how to look it up.
There is also a trade-off for some eligible Chromebooks released before 2021: opting into extended updates provides ten years of updates measured from the platform’s release, but removes Android apps and Google Play Store access. Review Google’s extended updates support details if you are considering one of these older devices.

7. Potentially spend less time near an outlet
Google advertises “Up to 10 hours of battery” for Chromebooks. The company cautions that actual battery life may be lower and varies significantly with network conditions, location, settings, and usage; it is a vendor claim, not a guaranteed workday or an independent comparison. See Google’s switching page for its qualification.
For a specific purchase, look for independent battery testing of that exact model and configuration, and consider the kind of work you do. Video calls, screen brightness, and demanding apps can affect runtime.

8. Choose a style and tier that fits your routine
Chromebooks come as traditional laptops, 2-in-1 convertibles, and tablets. Google also distinguishes standard Chromebooks from Chromebook Plus, a tier with its own broad specifications. Its product overview describes standard Chromebook storage as 32GB or more and Chromebook Plus storage as 128GB or more; those are page-level tier descriptions, not a guarantee about every individual configuration. See Google’s Chromebook overview.

Google lists photo, video, and music tools, streaming apps, Android games, and cloud gaming services among the things people can use on Chromebooks. These options broaden the device beyond basic browsing, but availability and capability depend on the app or service. Some titles and services require subscriptions, internet access, or particular hardware; Google says GeForce NOW is available only on certain Chromebooks. Its app and activity overview includes those caveats.
If gaming or creative work is a priority, verify the exact app, game, service, and Chromebook requirements before you switch. This ecosystem should not be confused with universal compatibility for Windows PC games or professional desktop software.
What to check before you switch
Google’s FAQ uses questions such as “What is a Chromebook good for?”, “Can you play games on a Chromebook?”, and “Do Chromebooks work offline?” Those are useful prompts, but the answer depends on your particular apps, files, and internet needs. Work through these checks before buying:
Quick Recap
- List your essential software. Confirm that each must-have app has a suitable ChromeOS, web, or Android version with the features you need.
- Plan your file move. Identify local files that need backing up or transferring, and decide whether cloud storage suits your workflow.
- Check offline needs. Set up the specific apps and content you need before travelling or working somewhere with unreliable internet.
- Verify long-term support. Look up the exact model’s update end date and, for an eligible pre-2021 device, weigh extended updates against losing Android and Play Store access.
- Compare the configuration. Check screen, keyboard, memory, storage, ports, weight, and independent battery results for the exact model—not just its product tier.
