What to watch, by film
Presence — Hulu, June 3
Steven Soderbergh’s supernatural thriller presents events from the perspective of an unseen presence in a family home. Rather than relying only on scares, it emphasizes the family’s relationships and character drama. The cast includes Lucy Liu, Chris Sullivan and Callina Liang.
Sinners — Amazon buy or rent, June 3
Ryan Coogler’s horror-thriller is set in 1930s Mississippi. Michael B. Jordan plays twin brothers who return home to open a juke joint, only to face a vampire threat. The Tom’s Guide roundup highlights the performances and score, and describes the film as a major theatrical success. Its listed Amazon option was digital PVOD, not a subscription debut.
#1 Best Overall
The Alto Knights — HBO Max, June 6
This crime drama, inspired by true events, features Robert De Niro as both Vito Genovese and Frank Costello. Tom’s Guide’s assessment was reserved: it found the pacing slow and the rewards limited beyond De Niro’s performance.
The Ballad of Wallis Island — Peacock, June 6
In this British comedy, reclusive lottery winner Charles arranges a private reunion performance by folk duo McGwyer Mortimer. Tom Basden and Carey Mulligan play the musicians; the roundup praises the film’s warmth and Tim Key’s performance.
Rank #2
- Shrink-wrapped
Hurry Up Tomorrow — Amazon buy or rent, June 6
Abel Tesfaye, known as the Weeknd, stars as a fictionalized version of himself in this psychological thriller, alongside Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan. The roundup strongly disliked the film and saw its clearest appeal for Weeknd fans or viewers curious about a widely panned release. It cited a 14% Rotten Tomatoes score in 2025; that dated figure may have changed and was not independently checked. The reported Amazon option was digital PVOD.
Predator: Killer of Killers — Hulu, June 6
Dan Trachtenberg’s animated anthology unfolds across three stories: a Viking raider, a Japanese samurai and a World War II pilot each confront the Predator. Its structure makes it the franchise pick for viewers who want several distinct historical settings rather than one continuous live-action plot.
Rank #3
- Brand New in box. The product ships with all relevant accessories
Straw — Netflix, June 6
Tyler Perry’s dark thriller follows a single mother whose chain of misfortunes draws her into a situation where she becomes the focus of suspicion. The film’s logline describes her as navigating “a series of unfortunate events” before finding herself “at the center of suspicion in an indifferent world.”
The Surfer — Amazon buy or rent, June 6
Lorcan Finnegan’s psychological thriller stars Nicolas Cage as a man who returns to surf with his son, only to be warned away from the beach by locals. That confrontation escalates into the film’s central conflict. The June 2025 listing was for digital rental or purchase.
Rank #4
Becoming Led Zeppelin — Netflix, June 7
This documentary traces the band’s rise from the early 1960s into the 1970s. Director Bernard MacMahon drew on band archives and early concert footage, making this the selection for viewers more interested in music history than fictional drama.
How to choose among the nine
- For supernatural tension rooted in family relationships, choose Presence; for vampires and a period setting, try Sinners.
- For crime stories, The Alto Knights is the period drama, though the source review cautions about its slow pace.
- For a lighter, music-centered story, The Ballad of Wallis Island offers comedy, while Becoming Led Zeppelin is the documentary option.
- For psychological unease, compare Hurry Up Tomorrow and The Surfer; for an animated franchise anthology, choose Predator: Killer of Killers.
- Straw is the dark thriller in the group.
