You can’t prove an Ethernet port is healthy with one test. You can narrow the fault down to the cable, the computer’s adapter, the router or switch port, the IP setup, or the internet connection. These nine methods are ordered from fastest to most advanced. Each one rules something in or out. None is a lab certification of the port hardware.

Two rules apply throughout. First, change only one thing between tests, so you know what caused any change in result. Second, a link light or a “Connected” status means the two ends detected each other physically. It does not mean you have an IP address or internet access.

What each method can and cannot tell you

Method What it tests What it cannot prove
1. Link lights Physical link at each end IP or internet connectivity
2. Windows adapter status Whether the OS sees a connected cable Whether the router port works
3. Known-good cable Whether the cable is the problem Port health, if nothing changes
4. Another device Whether the fault follows the computer Which cable or port is bad, if it also fails
5. Another LAN port Whether one router/switch port is suspect Anything if you pick the WAN port
6. Adapter enabled and recognized Disabled adapter, driver or device errors Cable or remote-port faults
7. Negotiated link speed The rate agreed between adapter and switch/router Your internet speed
8. IP check and gateway ping Addressing and local reachability Electrical health of the port
9. Cable tester or switch diagnostics Wiring faults in a cable or wall run Whether the PC’s Ethernet controller works

The nine methods

1. Check the link lights at both ends

Press the cable in at both ends until it clicks. Then look at the port on the computer and on the router or switch for link and activity indicators. Colors and blink patterns differ between devices, so check the device’s documentation before reading too much into them.

  • No light on the computer’s port: suspect the seating, the cable, a disabled adapter, or the port itself.
  • Lights on but no internet: the physical layer is probably fine. Look at address assignment, the gateway, DNS and the router’s connection to your provider.

Linksys’s router troubleshooting guidance draws the same line between “no light on the computer port” and “lights on, but no internet connection.”

2. Inspect the Windows adapter status

On Windows 10 or 11, open Settings, then Network & Internet, then Ethernet. Check whether the connection shows as connected or reports a cable problem such as “Network cable unplugged.” Menu labels vary between Windows releases. Microsoft also recommends running the built-in network troubleshooter from the same area.

Also confirm that the cable goes into a LAN port on the router, not the Internet/WAN port. This is a common mistake.

3. Swap in a known-good cable

Use a cable you have just confirmed works on another live connection. Keep the computer and the router port the same. If the link returns, the old cable was the problem. If nothing changes, carry on testing instead of declaring the port dead. Both Microsoft and Linksys recommend trying a different cable.

  • It links and works: the first computer, its adapter or its configuration becomes the main suspect.
  • It also fails: the cable or the router/switch port is more likely. Go to methods 3 and 5 to separate them.

5. Move to another LAN port

Keep the known-good cable and the same computer, and move to a different LAN port on the router or switch. If one port fails and another works under identical conditions, that port or its configuration is suspect. Configuration matters on managed switches, where a port can be disabled or set up differently. Don’t use the WAN/Internet port for this test.

6. Confirm the adapter is enabled and recognized

Check the operating system’s network adapter list and Device Manager for a disabled adapter or a device error. If the computer’s port shows no light at all, Linksys also suggests checking whether the port is enabled in the BIOS or firmware settings. Leave driver reinstalls until after the physical swap tests. Otherwise you may change the software while the real fault is a bad cable.

7. Check the negotiated link speed

On Windows, open the Ethernet adapter’s Status window and read the Speed field. TP-Link also documents the Windows and macOS paths for viewing Ethernet link speed. TP-Link’s guide, updated July 6, 2026, states that “the link speed shown is the speed negotiated between your PC’s network adapter and the router or switch port.”

That number is not your internet plan’s speed. A lower-than-expected rate (for example, 100 Mbps where you expected 1 Gbps) points to the cable, the capabilities of one endpoint or the negotiation settings. It is a prompt for further checks, not a verdict.

8. Check the IP configuration and ping the gateway

Once there is a physical link, check addressing. Microsoft Learn documents using ipconfig and ping to inspect an adapter and its network path.

  1. Open Command Prompt.
  2. Run ipconfig and find your Ethernet adapter. Note its IPv4 address and Default Gateway.
  3. Run ping followed by the gateway address (for example, ping 192.168.1.1, substituting your own).

Interpret the results with care:

  • Link present but no valid address (such as an address starting 169.254): this points to configuration or DHCP, not a failed port.
  • Gateway replies: the local path works. If the internet is still down, test farther destinations and DNS, and check the router’s uplink.
  • Gateway ping fails: this can mean a cable, router or other network problem. Some devices or policies also don’t answer ping, so a failed ping alone does not prove a bad port.

9. Test the cable wiring, or use managed-switch diagnostics

These are optional advanced checks. Cisco advises testing a cable that runs to a wall jack with a cable tester. A tester can show wiring faults along a cable run, but it says nothing about whether the PC’s Ethernet controller works.

Some managed switches also have cable diagnostics. TP-Link’s guide for its managed switches says these can report normal, open, short or crosstalk status, plus an estimated cable length or fault location. The feature is limited to listed models and commands. On some switches it only works on a port whose link is down. A managed switch can also send ping and traceroute from the switch itself, which tests reachability from that point in the network. None of this is universal, so check your switch’s documentation.

A sensible order to follow

  1. Reseat the cable and read the link lights (method 1).
  2. Check the OS adapter status and that you’re using a LAN port (method 2).
  3. Swap in a known-good cable (method 3).
  4. Try another device (method 4), then another LAN port (method 5).
  5. Check that the adapter is enabled and error-free (method 6).
  6. Read the negotiated speed (method 7).
  7. Check the IP and ping the gateway (method 8).
  8. Use a cable tester or switch diagnostics if the run or equipment supports them (method 9).

Reading the results

  • Works on another computer but not this one: investigate the original computer’s adapter state, driver and configuration.
  • One router or switch port fails across known-good cables and devices: the port or its configuration is more suspect. A single swap test is not certainty, so repeat it before concluding.
  • Everything links but nothing loads: the problem lies beyond the port. Check addressing, DNS and the router’s connection to your provider.

Avoid factory-resetting a router as an early port test. It can erase your custom settings, and you don’t need it to isolate a cable or port.
