If the motherboard’s 8-pin EATX12V/CPU power connector is broken or melted, switch off the power supply, unplug the computer, and do not turn it back on to test it. The damage could involve the motherboard socket, the PSU cable, or both; have both inspected by the motherboard or PSU manufacturer, or a qualified PC repairer.
What the damaged connector does
EATX12V or ATX_12V is the motherboard’s CPU-power connection. It commonly uses a 4+4-pin or 8-pin EPS12V CPU cable. That cable is not interchangeable with an 8-pin PCIe cable for a graphics card. See Corsair’s explanation of EPS12V and PCIe plugs.
The title alone cannot establish what failed or why. Visible melting does not identify whether the cable, motherboard socket, PSU, or multiple parts are damaged, and it does not establish a single cause or a known failure rate.
What to do immediately
- Cut power. Turn off the PSU’s rear switch, then unplug its mains lead before opening the case. Intel’s PC troubleshooting guidance says to switch off and unplug before working inside a computer.
- Do not reconnect or manipulate the damaged plug. Do not force it, scrape out fused plastic, or reuse a visibly damaged connector. The manufacturer guidance cited here does not provide a safe user-level procedure for extracting melted material or repairing a damaged motherboard header.
- Document the system and damage. Record the motherboard and PSU models, and photograph the motherboard socket and cable plug. Ask the service provider to inspect both sides. AMD notes that no-power problems can involve internal power connections, a faulty PSU, or a motherboard, but that general troubleshooting list does not diagnose this damage. See AMD’s motherboard troubleshooting guidance.
- Check warranty terms before opening a prebuilt system. Contact the system maker if the computer is under warranty; Intel specifically advises checking with the manufacturer about warranty considerations.
Identify the cable without trying to reseat it
Motherboards may have an 8-pin EATX12V_1 CPU input and, on some models, an additional 4-pin EATX12V_2 input alongside the main 24-pin EATXPWR connection. The exact arrangement depends on the board. ASUS’s no-power motherboard checklist describes these connections and general troubleshooting, but it is not a repair procedure for a melted header.
#1 Best Overall
- CPU Power Extension: This 8 pin EPS extension cable provides additional length to connect the motherboard CPU power connector without stretching or stressing the PSU cables, ideal for larger PC cases or custom builds.
- Enhanced Durability: Encased in a tough braided sleeve, this 8pin CPU cable not only safeguards against physical wear but also aids in maintaining optimal airflow, reducing heat build-up inside the case.
- Secure Connection Assurance: Fitted with heat-shrink tubing at both ends, this ATX 8 pin cable ensures a firm, reliable connection that prevents accidental disconnections that could lead to system failures.
- Versatile Compatibility: Perfect for powering motherboards that require an 8-pin EPS or ATX power connection, this cable is a critical component for assembling high-performance computing systems.
- Streamlined Cable Management: Measuring 10 inches, this EPS extension cable is long enough to facilitate flexible cable routing and management, helping to maintain a neat and organized PC build environment.
Normal installation guidance says to align a CPU cable’s latch and seat the connector fully. That does not make it safe to reconnect a melted or broken plug. Keep CPU EPS and GPU PCIe cables distinct: they may both have eight pins, but they are different cables and are not substitutes.
Choose the repair path after inspection
| Inspection finding | What to do |
|---|---|
| Cable damaged; motherboard socket confirmed sound | Replace the cable only with an EPS/CPU cable confirmed for the exact PSU model. For modular PSUs, matching the connector shape is not enough: PSU-side pinouts can differ across brands and models. ASUS warns against mixing modular cables in its modular PSU cable guidance; Corsair also explains cable compatibility in its cable guide. |
| Motherboard socket damaged | Ask the motherboard manufacturer or a qualified board-level repairer whether the socket can be repaired. If not, a compatible motherboard may be needed. AMD advises consulting the manual or manufacturer for motherboard troubleshooting, and ASUS directs users to product support when its troubleshooting does not resolve a problem. |
| PSU damage suspected, or cable condition is uncertain | Have the PSU and cable assessed before using them again, and contact the PSU manufacturer. A technician should determine whether testing with another PSU is safe; general advice to try a known-good PSU is not a reason to substitute one while the connector damage remains unresolved. |
| Motherboard replacement considered | Confirm compatibility with the existing CPU, memory, case, and other components using their exact model details. The connector description alone is not enough to recommend a replacement board. |
Why ordinary troubleshooting is not enough
Manufacturer checklists can help with a computer that will not power on, but their routine steps—such as checking connections or trying a known-good PSU—do not establish how to repair a melted connector. AMD’s guidance is to consult the manual or manufacturer for help with motherboard troubleshooting. With visible physical damage, have the components assessed before any further power-on attempt.
