The best PC gaming upgrade under $100 is the one that fixes a real limitation: not enough memory, too little game storage, unreliable Wi-Fi, an uncomfortable mouse, or a peripheral that does not suit the games you play. Start with the problem, then check compatibility and current prices before buying. A small upgrade can improve convenience, comfort, or control, but it will not substitute for a major CPU or graphics-card upgrade.
Start with the problem, not the shopping list
Before spending, identify what is holding back your setup. If games or other applications run short of memory, consider RAM. If your library fills the drive, add storage. If the desktop’s wireless connection is poor, check the Wi-Fi path. If your hardware works but feels uncomfortable or unsuitable, a mouse, keyboard, headset, IEMs, or controller may be a better use of the budget.
- Choose a component upgrade for a capacity, compatibility, temperature, or connectivity problem.
- Choose a peripheral for fit, comfort, input preference, or the games you play.
- Check the exact model’s compatibility and the price and stock available to you; deal prices are temporary.
Eight upgrades to consider
1. Add compatible memory
More RAM may help when your PC is short on memory for the games and other tasks you run together. Before buying, confirm the memory generation (such as DDR4 or DDR5), DIMM form factor, motherboard support, and supported speeds. Check the motherboard documentation and the configuration already installed; capacity and kit compatibility matter more than choosing a kit based on an old price list.
2. Add or replace an SSD
An SSD can add room for a growing game library or replace an older supported boot drive. Match the drive to the motherboard: an M.2 slot may support NVMe, SATA, or both, and the interface determines the drive’s potential connection speed. For a secondary game drive, capacity and cost per gigabyte may matter most. For a boot-drive replacement, speed and a plan to migrate or reinstall the operating system become more important.

PC Gamer once reported a Lexar NM790 2TB deal at $86.95, with advertised sequential speeds of 7,400MB/s read and 6,500MB/s write. That is an older deal report, not a current offer; check present pricing and confirm your system supports the drive before treating it as an option. PC Gamer’s deal coverage illustrates the SSD upgrade path, but does not establish today’s price.
3. Choose a mouse that fits
A mouse that suits your hand and grip can make everyday use more comfortable and give you input that feels right for your games. Compare shape, weight, wired or wireless connection, sensor, polling rate, and how many buttons you will actually use. Specs alone cannot tell you whether the shape will fit your hand.
As a dated US example, Tom’s Hardware listed the Logitech G305 Lightspeed for $29.99 at Amazon on October 7, 2026. The article described a Hero 12K sensor, 1,000Hz polling, and six programmable buttons. Price and availability can change, so treat that figure as a snapshot, not a standing offer. 4. Pick a keyboard for your layout and games
Budget keyboards vary in size, switch feel, noise, connection, and extra features. A full-size layout keeps a number pad; compact layouts save desk space but omit some keys. Decide whether you prefer wired or wireless and whether a particular switch feel or sound suits your setup.
Hall Effect switches and rapid-trigger features may matter to players who specifically want those behaviors, but they are not necessary for every game or player. Tom’s Hardware’s June 2026 budget guide includes picks around $50. PC Gamer’s June 26, 2026 roundup discusses a Hall Effect keyboard, while noting that its author had not personally tested that model. Keep that distinction in mind when using editorial roundups to compare options. Tom’s Hardware’s budget keyboard guide and PC Gamer’s setup roundup offer further context.
5. Improve game audio or chat
An over-ear headset makes sense if you want an integrated microphone or prefer that style of fit. In-ear monitors (IEMs) can be a lower-cost alternative if you are comfortable wearing earbuds and do not need an integrated boom mic. Consider fit, connection, microphone needs, and whether you prefer an open or closed over-ear design or an in-ear option. Audio gear may suit your preferences, but no general promise of better competitive performance follows from choosing a particular type.

PC Gamer’s August 11, 2026 deal roundup listed the GameSir Nova Lite at $22.99 and identified Hall Effect sticks and triggers. That is a dated deal price, not a current guarantee; verify both the price and compatibility with your devices before buying. See PC Gamer’s roundup.

It’s the perfect household essential and an ideal gift for husbands, dads, sons, or friends who love electronics repair and DIY projects.
7. Add or upgrade desktop Wi-Fi
A PCIe Wi-Fi card may help a desktop that lacks a suitable wireless adapter, but it only makes sense if the rest of the connection supports the change. Check for an available PCIe slot, operating-system support, router compatibility, the Wi-Fi standard you want, and a practical place for the antennas. Poor reception can also involve router placement or obstructions, so a new card is not a guaranteed fix.
Tom’s Hardware’s 2022 article described Wi-Fi 6 and 6E cards under $100 at the time. Those examples and prices are historical and do not establish current model availability or pricing. Its under-$100 upgrade guide provides background on the category.

8. Improve CPU cooling when heat or noise is the issue
An aftermarket cooler can be worth considering if CPU temperatures or cooler noise are a problem. Confirm support for your CPU socket and case clearance, including cooler height or radiator support and fan clearance. Also consider whether you can install it safely and whether your case airflow is adequate.

Check compatibility and the real price
For internal components, use your motherboard and case documentation rather than relying on a product title alone. Confirm the interface, socket, form factor, clearances, and operating-system support that apply to your build. For peripherals, check device and game support, connection type, and the physical fit or layout you prefer.
The cited prices are dated US examples, not a promise that an item is still below $100. Tom’s Hardware’s G305 listing was updated October 7, 2026; PC Gamer’s Nova Lite listing was dated August 11, 2026. The Lexar SSD figure is from older deal coverage. The 2022 Wi-Fi and cooler examples are historical. Check the retailer’s current price, stock, and return terms before ordering.
