For a low-fuss route to free over-the-air TV, start by matching an antenna to the stations and signal conditions where you live. The eight models below span simple indoor designs, amplified indoor options, and antennas intended for an attic or roof. None can guarantee reception straight out of the box: you will usually need to choose a location, connect the coaxial cable, and scan for channels.
Before buying, check which stations you want to receive and whether they broadcast on VHF, UHF, or both. The FCC says an antenna needs to receive both bands to receive digital TV signals from all stations. Signal strength, tower direction, terrain, nearby buildings, and home construction all affect what works at your address.
What “right out of the box” can—and cannot—mean
These picks are designed for different installation situations, but an antenna cannot create a signal that local conditions or its placement prevent it from receiving. A flat indoor antenna is usually easier to install than a roof-mounted model; it may also be more affected by walls, windows, nearby buildings, trees, and terrain. Attic or outdoor placement can make sense when signals are weaker or indoor obstructions are a problem, at the cost of more installation work.

Reception also depends on whether the antenna supports the stations’ bands and whether its direction suits the tower layout. The FCC notes that some antennas perform better on one band than another; it describes simple indoor antennas as usually sufficient in strong-signal areas, higher-quality indoor or outdoor antennas as options for moderate signals, and outdoor antennas as appropriate for weak signals. See the FCC’s Antennas and Digital Television guide.

Eight TV antennas to consider
PCWorld’s December 2, 2025 roundup grouped the following models by use case. These categories are a starting point, not a universal ranking: choose based on your location, desired stations, installation options, and whether you need VHF, UHF, or both.
| Model | Use case in PCWorld’s roundup | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Channel Master FLATenna 35 | Budget indoor | A flat indoor option. Tom’s Guide reported 83 channels received in its own test location; most were described as watchable. That result is not a forecast for another home. |
| Winegard FlatWave Amped | Flexible amplified indoor | Amplified indoor design. Amplification is not a guarantee of better reception; an amplifier can sometimes make reception worse. |
| Televes Bexia | Rigid amplified indoor | Amplified indoor option for readers who prefer a rigid form factor to a flat antenna. |
| Ultra-Vizion Transparent | Low-visibility indoor | Indoor option intended to be less conspicuous. Check the desired stations’ bands and local signal conditions before choosing it. |
| Televes Dat Boss Mix LR | Roof mount | Outdoor installation category; plan for suitable mounting and aiming. |
| Antennas Direct DB8e | Roof-mount runner-up | Can be aimed in two directions, but PCWorld says it is not designed for VHF. Check whether your desired stations use VHF before selecting it. |
| Winegard Elite 7550 | Attic/outdoor | Suitable for attic or outdoor installation and receives UHF and VHF-high, according to PCWorld. |
| Antennas Direct Clearstream 4 Max | Attic/outdoor runner-up | Multidirectional design with no built-in amplifier, according to PCWorld. |

Which type fits your home?
Choose an indoor antenna for convenience in a strong-signal area
Indoor antennas are the easiest to place and connect, but their location matters. A window or higher position may work better than a spot behind a television or against a wall. Brick, metal siding, radiant barriers, stucco, nearby structures, trees, and terrain can weaken or obstruct reception.
Consider an attic or outdoor antenna for weaker signals
Getting an antenna higher or outside can help when indoor reception is limited. That approach brings added mounting and cable-routing work; outdoor connections also need checking for moisture or corrosion. For weak signals, the FCC identifies an outdoor antenna as an appropriate option, but the exact model and direction still depend on the stations you want.

- This HD antenna is compatible with both smart TVs and older models.
- Signal for Better Reception on All TVs
Match directionality and bands to the stations
A directional antenna may suit a group of stations located in a particular direction; a multidirectional model may be useful when towers are spread across different directions. Verify whether your target stations use VHF, UHF, or both. The FCC describes VHF as channels 2–13 and UHF as channels 14–51 in its guide. A model’s advertised range alone does not establish that it will receive every local station.
Do not treat amplification as a universal fix
An amplifier can be useful in some setups, but it does not solve every reception problem. Tom’s Guide notes that amplification can sometimes make reception worse, especially when the issue is not simply a weak signal. If reception breaks up or disappears despite a strong nearby signal, consider interference or overload rather than automatically buying a larger antenna or amplifier.

How to set up an antenna and find channels
- Check local stations first. Use local station and reception guidance to identify the channels you want and their VHF or UHF requirements. Consider tower direction and whether indoor obstructions or terrain may affect your location.
- Connect the antenna. Attach its coaxial cable to the TV or converter box’s antenna input. Follow the model’s included directions for placement and mounting.
- Select broadcast reception. In the TV or converter box input or channel settings, choose antenna, air, or broadcast mode rather than cable. Exact menu wording varies by device.
- Run a channel scan. Start the TV’s channel scan after connecting the antenna. Antennas Direct says in its ClearStream 1MAX TV Antenna Quick Start Guide: “Once your antenna is installed, you must complete a channel scan, even if you have done so before installing to find the best location for the antenna.”
- Adjust and scan again. For a directional antenna, aim toward the relevant towers. Try a higher position or another location, especially near a window if using an indoor model, then rescan each time you move it.
- Check the connection if reception remains unreliable. Confirm coax connections are secure; for outdoor installations, inspect exposed connections for moisture or corrosion.
How to interpret review results and advertised range
Published channel counts describe a reviewer’s test setup, not a promise for your home. In its test location, Tom’s Guide reported that the Mohu Gateway Plus received 41 channels, with 34 meeting the reviewer’s near-flawless-image mark; it reported 83 channels for the Channel Master FLATenna 35, most described as watchable; and 60 channels for the Antennas Direct Goliath. Those results depend on the test location and conditions and should not be treated as expected results at another address.
Tom’s Guide currently lists the Mohu Gateway Plus as its overall pick, the Channel Master FLATenna 35 as its budget pick, and the Antennas Direct Goliath as its outdoor pick. Its roundup is These are the 3 best TV antennas we’ve tested for range and picture quality. A review ranking or advertised range cannot account for every home’s tower layout, terrain, trees, building materials, placement, or interference.
