You can watch movies online for free legally through ad-supported streaming services or, if your library or school participates, library-linked platforms. This guide covers Tubi, Pluto TV, The Roku Channel, Plex, Xumo Play, YouTube, Kanopy, and Hoopla. Catalogs, device support, and regional access change, so check the official service for the specific movie and country before you press play.
What to know before choosing a free movie service
Free legal streaming usually comes with ads or requires access through a participating library or institution. A movie listed on a service today may later leave its catalog, and a listing may not be available in your country. Free services also do not necessarily include recent theatrical releases.
- Check the viewing terms: distinguish free with ads from free with a library card, rental, or subscription access.
- Check the exact title and region: search the provider’s official site or app and confirm the version is available where you are.
- Use authorized sources: a search result or an upload on a general video platform does not by itself prove a film is licensed for free viewing.
The Motion Picture Association’s Watch It Legally directory says, “Today, there are more than 140 platforms that offer legal access to your favorite movies and television shows anywhere, and on any device you want.” The directory aggregates platforms for U.S. viewers; availability varies by country, and the page does not state a publication date for that figure. Use it to discover services, then confirm a film’s current listing with the provider.

1. Tubi
Tubi offers an ad-supported catalog of movies and shows. The service describes itself as free and legal and says it uses short ad breaks; it lists viewing on the web, mobile devices, smart TVs, streaming players, and consoles. These are provider claims, not a guarantee that every title is permanent or available in every country. Check Tubi’s free-and-legal FAQ and service page for current details.

Kanopy is an institution-linked option, not a service everyone can necessarily access. Check whether your public library, college, or another participating institution provides eligibility, and review its current access terms before signing up.

How to choose the right service
| What matters to you | Options to consider | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Movies plus scheduled channels | Pluto TV; Plex | Current channel lineup, movie selection, and ad experience. |
| Browsing an ad-supported catalog | Tubi; The Roku Channel; Plex; Xumo Play | Whether the title is currently available in your country and on your device. |
| Library or institutional access | Hoopla; Kanopy | Whether your library or institution participates and what credentials or borrowing rules apply. |
| A specific movie you found online | YouTube or any service above | Whether the listing is from the service or a rights-holder, and whether it is free to watch legally in your region. |
Use a service’s own search or catalog to verify a specific film. Discovery and recommendation sites can point you toward possible options, but a listing may lag behind licensing changes. Compare the format you prefer, your tolerance for ads, available library or school credentials, country access, and compatibility with your phone, browser, smart TV, console, or streaming device.

Where you can watch: browser, phone, or TV
A streaming stick is optional. If your television cannot install the app you want, a compatible Roku or Fire TV device may provide another way to access it, but check the device’s current app support and regional availability first. A compatible smart TV, computer browser, or phone can let you watch without buying streaming hardware.
