The most reliable way to save on flights is to compare flexible dates and nearby airports, then check the full cost and complexity of each itinerary—not to rely on a universal “best day” to book. Track the route you want, verify the airline’s fare and baggage rules, and weigh airport time-savers against their fee and eligibility requirements.
1. Compare nearby travel dates
There is no single booking day or advance-purchase window that guarantees the lowest fare for every route. When asking when to book a flight, start by comparing the dates you could actually travel. In Google Flights, use the date grid or price graph to see how fares differ across nearby dates. The U.S. Department of Transportation also recommends considering flexible travel plans.
A fare that looks cheaper may require an extra night away, lost work time, or a longer connection. Compare the ticket price with those schedule costs before changing plans.
2. Check nearby airports—but add the ground-trip cost
Search departure and arrival airports near your preferred cities. Google Flights can show airport alternatives, and the DOT notes that flying from a nearby departure city can sometimes lower the fare. The useful comparison is the total trip, not just the ticket.

- Add the cost of rail, bus, taxi, or driving to the alternate airport.
- Include parking, tolls, and any extra overnight stay.
- Allow enough time for the ground leg, especially if it is on a separate booking.
An airport with a lower fare can be a poor bargain if reaching it adds substantial cost or makes the itinerary harder to manage.
3. Track the exact route and dates
Once you have a realistic route and travel dates, use Google Flights price tracking and the price graph to monitor changes. Tracking a specific itinerary is more useful than watching a broad destination because it reflects the dates and airports you are considering.
Google may display whether a fare is low, typical, or high based on past prices, and it may offer directional price predictions. Those signals use historical trends; they are not guarantees that a fare will rise or fall. Set a price alert if you are still deciding, and make the purchase decision against your budget and travel constraints rather than treating a prediction as certainty. See Google’s flight-search guidance.

4. Compare the whole itinerary, not just the displayed fare
Google Flights separates “Best” and “Cheapest” options because the lowest displayed fare can involve trade-offs. Some cheaper results may use an online travel agency, require a self-transfer, or use different airports for the outbound and return legs. Before choosing, compare:
- Final price: include baggage and seat-selection charges you expect to pay.
- Connection details: check the connection time, whether you change airports, and whether you must collect and recheck bags.
- Schedule: account for the total travel time and the consequences of a missed connection.
- Flexibility: review the change and cancellation conditions for the specific fare.
A self-transfer means you may be responsible for getting yourself and your bags onto the next flight; a missed onward flight may not be handled like a protected connection on one ticket. The DOT also notes that small airlines may have fewer rerouting options when delays or cancellations occur. Read its air-travel consumer guidance and the itinerary details before paying.
5. Read the fare conditions on the airline’s website
A low headline fare may exclude services you expect. The DOT advises travelers to check what a low-cost fare includes. Depending on the carrier and fare, baggage, meals, advance seat assignment, or baggage transfer may cost extra or be unavailable. Check the operating airline’s own fare conditions, especially when a search result is sold through another company.

Review change and cancellation terms before purchase as well. Rules vary by fare and booking, so do not assume that two tickets on the same route have the same flexibility. The DOT explains ticket-purchase protections and optional-service practices in its refund and ticket-purchase guidance; the precise protection depends on the circumstances and rule described there.

There is no carry-on size or baggage allowance that applies to every airline and fare. Before packing—or buying a bag—check the operating carrier’s current dimensions, weight limits, included allowance, and fees for each leg. This matters especially on itineraries with multiple airlines, where one carrier’s allowance may not apply to another’s.
The UK Civil Aviation Authority’s trip-planning guidance and the GOV.UK air passenger travel guide advise travelers to check baggage and fees. Confirm the rules directly with the carrier for your booking rather than relying on a bag marketed as “airline size.”

7. Consider trusted-traveler programs if you fly often enough
For travelers who regularly pass through U.S. airport security, TSA PreCheck and Global Entry may reduce screening friction. They are different programs with different uses: PreCheck is for eligible expedited screening at participating U.S. airports; Global Entry provides expedited U.S. arrival processing and includes PreCheck benefits for approved members.
| Program | Published fee and term | What it is for |
|---|---|---|
| TSA PreCheck | $76.75 for five years, as listed by DHS | Expedited security screening at participating U.S. airports |
| Global Entry | $120 for five years, as listed by DHS | Expedited U.S. arrival processing; includes TSA PreCheck benefits |
These fees can change. Check the DHS Trusted Traveler Programs information before applying, and consider eligibility, airport coverage, and application or interview timing. Global Entry approval and interview scheduling can take time, so it may not help with an imminent trip.
Recommended Free Tools
To use PreCheck on a reservation, DHS says to include your Known Traveler Number (KTN) in the booking and confirm the TSA PreCheck indicator appears on your boarding pass. Enrollment alone does not guarantee that indicator on every flight.

8. Check what insurance or existing card benefits actually cover
Travel insurance may address risks such as a missed flight, a medical emergency, or lost or stolen belongings, but the coverage depends on the policy’s terms, limits, and exclusions. Before buying a policy, check whether an existing card or other coverage already applies, and compare the benefits with the risks of your particular trip.
UK travel guidance from the CAA and GOV.UK supports considering insurance and checking what is covered. It does not establish that one policy is best for every traveler; read the actual policy documents and confirm that your destination and planned activities are covered.
What Google’s 2026 fare figure can—and cannot—tell you
In its 2026 holiday travel trends, Google reported that nonstop tickets were 20% more expensive on average. The published search result does not establish enough about the routes, dates, or comparison method behind that figure to use it as a prediction for every trip. Treat it as a broad reported average, not a reason to assume a connection will always save money: compare the actual fare difference with the extra time, transfer risk, and any airport change.
