A laptop that says “plugged in, not charging” is not necessarily broken. The battery may be protected by a charge limit, the adapter may not provide enough power, or the laptop may be consuming more electricity than the charger supplies. A damaged port, outdated firmware, failed battery, or charging-circuit fault are also possible.
Work through these fixes in order. Start with the charger and charging settings before reinstalling drivers or changing firmware.
1. Check the charger, cable, outlet, and charging port
Use the charger supplied with the laptop, or a replacement that matches its required voltage, current, wattage, and USB Power Delivery specifications. A charger can run the laptop without having enough power left to charge the battery.

Standard USB-C can provide up to 5 V/3 A, or 15 W; higher laptop charging levels normally require USB Power Delivery. Therefore, a USB-C connector by itself does not prove that a charger can charge the laptop.

- Disconnect the charger from the laptop and wall.
- Try a different wall outlet.
- Inspect the brick, cable, connectors, and laptop port for cuts, bent contacts, looseness, or heat damage.
- Remove dust or debris that prevents the USB-C plug or barrel connector from fully inserting. Do not push metal objects into the port.
- If the laptop has more than one USB-C port, use the port marked for charging or power delivery.
- Connect the charger directly to the laptop, not through a dock or USB-C hub.
On Dell laptops, check whether the charging LED comes on. No LED can mean that power is not reaching the laptop or that the charging port has failed. A replacement charger should match the wattage specified for the model and should be approved by the manufacturer.
2. Check whether a charge limit is intentional
Many laptops deliberately stop charging before 100% to reduce battery wear. The wording may still say “plugged in, not charging,” even though the system is working normally.
Windows 11 and Windows 10
Open Settings > System > Power & battery. If Windows Smart charging is active, a heart symbol may appear on the battery icon. Hover over the taskbar battery icon and look for “Fully Smart charged.”
Recommended Free Tools
There is no single Windows switch that disables Smart charging on every laptop. The manufacturer’s utility or firmware usually controls the threshold. Look for battery settings in apps such as Dell Power Manager, Lenovo Vantage, or the equivalent software supplied by your laptop maker.
Dell
- Shut down the laptop.
- Turn it on and repeatedly press F2, about once per second, to enter BIOS Setup.
- Open the Power or Battery section.
- Check the charging mode.
Depending on the model, Dell may offer Adaptive, Standard, ExpressCharge, Primarily AC Use, or Custom. Primarily AC Use can limit charging to approximately 50–80%. A low custom threshold can do the same. Select Standard if you need the battery to charge to 100%, then save the change and restart.
Lenovo ThinkPad
Some ThinkPad models stop charging between 95% and 100% because of a battery threshold. In Lenovo Vantage, look for Battery Threshold or a similar conservation-mode setting. This option is not available on every ThinkPad or every Vantage version.
Mac
Open Apple menu > System Settings > Battery. Optimized Battery Charging may delay charging beyond 80%, while Charge Limit may enforce a configured maximum. Select the battery-status menu in the menu bar and choose Charge to Full Now when you need the full capacity. Some Battery options vary by Mac model.

Apple also notes that a Mac can temporarily stop charging and discharge to 93% or lower before charging resumes. That behavior is not, by itself, evidence of a bad charger or battery.
3. Reduce the laptop’s power load and temperature
If the laptop is using more power than the adapter supplies, the battery can discharge while the charger is connected. This commonly happens during gaming, video editing, 3D rendering, compiling, or when a low-wattage USB-C adapter is used with a performance laptop.
- Save your work and close games, video editors, virtual machines, and other demanding programs.
- Disconnect unnecessary USB devices and external displays.
- Set the laptop on a hard, ventilated surface rather than fabric.
- Let it cool for several minutes.
- Test charging while the laptop is asleep or powered off.
Microsoft recommends charging while the PC is asleep or turned off to improve charging speed. Apple similarly documents that a Mac may run from the adapter without charging its battery during high-performance work or when the adapter is underpowered.
If the laptop charges while powered off but loses battery percentage during heavy use, the likely issue is insufficient adapter power relative to system load—not necessarily a failed battery.
4. Reset Windows power-management settings
A corrupted or altered Windows power plan can interfere with normal power behavior. Dell’s troubleshooting procedure resets the power plans and refreshes hibernation settings.
- Select Start and type cmd.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Run each command separately, pressing Enter after each one:
powercfg -restoredefaultschemes
powercfg -h off
powercfg -h on
Restart the laptop after the commands finish. The first command restores Windows’ default power schemes. The second and third disable and re-enable hibernation.
This resets customized Windows power plans, so you may need to reapply preferences such as sleep timers or power-mode settings afterward. It will not repair a defective charger, port, battery, or motherboard charging circuit.

5. Reinstall or roll back battery and power-related drivers
Driver problems are possible, particularly if the issue began immediately after a Windows or manufacturer update. Reinstalling a driver is a troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed battery repair.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Reinstall a device driver
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Batteries or System devices.
- Right-click the relevant device and select Uninstall device.
- Select Uninstall if prompted.
- Restart Windows. Windows will attempt to reinstall the driver.
On Intel-based Dell laptops, Dell specifically identifies Intel Management Engine Interface or Intel ME Interface as a power-delivery-related component. It appears under Device Manager > System devices. Right-click it, select Update driver > Search automatically for drivers, and restart.
Roll back a recent driver
If charging stopped after a driver update, open Device Manager, right-click the affected device, select Properties > Driver, and choose Roll Back Driver if the button is available. Administrator permission is required.
Windows Update is normally the preferred source for current drivers. For model-specific power, chipset, and firmware drivers, check the laptop manufacturer’s support page as well.
6. Update BIOS, firmware, and manufacturer power software
BIOS settings and firmware control charging behavior below the Windows interface. An outdated BIOS can also cause incorrect adapter detection or power-management problems.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Find the exact laptop model on the manufacturer’s support site.
- Install the latest recommended BIOS, chipset, power-management, and battery-related updates.
- Update the manufacturer’s power utility, if one is installed.
- Restart and check the charging behavior again.
Keep the AC adapter connected during a BIOS update and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Do not interrupt power while firmware is being written.
Do not assume that every laptop uses the same BIOS key or menu. Dell documents F2 for entering BIOS Setup, but other manufacturers and models may use a different key. Battery settings may be under Power, Battery, Advanced, or a model-specific menu.

7. Check adapter recognition in firmware and test charging while powered off
If the firmware cannot identify the adapter, Windows may be unable to charge correctly even when the laptop runs from wall power.
Dell adapter check
- Power off the Dell laptop.
- Turn it on and repeatedly press F2.
- Open Overview.
- Find AC Adapter.
If the entry says Unknown or shows the wrong wattage, suspect an incompatible or faulty adapter, a poor connection, insufficient wattage, or a damaged charging port. Test with a known-good Dell-approved charger of the correct wattage.
Power-off charging test
- Shut the laptop down completely.
- Connect the AC adapter.
- Check the charging LED and leave it connected for 15–30 minutes.
- Start the laptop and check whether the battery percentage increased.
LED meanings vary by model. Dell generally describes solid white or green as normal charging, blinking amber as a battery or charging problem, and no light as absent power or a possible port failure. Consult the service manual for the exact model.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Generate a battery report and check for hardware failure
Windows can show whether the battery has lost substantial capacity. This helps distinguish battery wear from an adapter or charging-path problem.
- Open an elevated Command Prompt: select Start, type cmd, right-click Command Prompt, and choose Run as administrator.
- Run powercfg /batteryreport.
Windows saves an HTML report in the current directory and displays its location. To choose a specific location, use powercfg /batteryreport /output “C:\batteryreport.html”.
To limit the analysis to four days, use powercfg /batteryreport /duration 4.
Open the report and compare Design capacity with Full charge capacity. A much lower full-charge figure indicates battery wear, but the report does not prove that the charger, port, charging IC, or motherboard is healthy.

Arrange professional service if the laptop will not charge with a known-good, correctly rated adapter; the port is loose or hot; the firmware reports an unknown adapter; the battery is swollen; or the charging LED shows a persistent fault. Stop using a laptop with a visibly swollen or damaged battery.
What not to assume
- “Plugged in, not charging” always means a dead battery: charge limits, temperature, load, drivers, firmware, and adapter wattage can produce the same message.
- Any USB-C charger will charge any USB-C laptop: USB-C ports and chargers have different power capabilities.
- Leaving a laptop plugged in always overcharges it: modern charge-threshold and battery-health features intentionally stop or limit charging.
- Reinstalling the battery driver always fixes it: driver repair cannot solve a damaged port, underpowered adapter, failed battery, or charging-circuit fault.
- Windows 10 still receives normal support: Microsoft ended support on October 14, 2025. Windows 10 no longer receives free normal Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes.
FAQ
Why is my laptop plugged in but not charging at 80%?
A battery-health feature is probably limiting the charge. Check Windows Smart charging, Dell’s charging mode, Lenovo Vantage’s Battery Threshold, or macOS Optimized Battery Charging and Charge Limit. On a Mac, use the battery-status menu and select Charge to Full Now when necessary.
Can a laptop charger power the laptop but still not charge the battery?
Yes. The adapter may provide enough power to run the laptop but not enough to run it and charge the battery at the same time. This is common with demanding workloads and underpowered USB-C chargers.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallShould I reinstall the battery driver?
You can try it through Device Manager, especially if the problem followed a driver update, but it is not a universal fix. Check the adapter, charge threshold, firmware, port, battery condition, and system load as well.
How do I know whether the battery or charger is defective?
Test with a correctly rated, known-good charger and check whether the laptop charges while powered off. On Dell systems, BIOS Setup can show whether the AC adapter is recognized and whether its wattage is correct. A battery report can reveal battery wear but cannot validate the entire charging circuit.
The Bottom Line
First verify that the charger and USB-C port can deliver the laptop’s required power. Then check charge limits, reduce system load, and test charging while the laptop is off. If the issue remains, reset Windows power settings, reinstall or roll back relevant drivers, update firmware, and generate a battery report. Persistent failure with a known-good adapter—especially an unknown adapter reading, damaged port, abnormal LED, heat, or swelling—points to hardware service rather than another Windows setting.
