Native 8-bit color is the more direct implementation: it provides 256 gradations per red, green, and blue channel. A 6-bit panel with Hi-FRC uses rapid changes between nearby levels to approximate additional gradations. That can make its output resemble 8-bit color, but it does not give the panel native 8-bit precision. Which monitor is the better choice depends on its full specifications and your needs—not bit depth alone.
What do 8-bit and 6-bit + Hi-FRC mean?
Bit depth describes the number of distinct levels available for each color channel. In an RGB display, those channels are red, green, and blue. AMD describes the common 8-bits-per-channel configuration as 24-bit true color: 8 bits for each of the three channels (AMD’s color-depth explanation).
| Panel specification | Native levels per RGB channel | Possible RGB combinations |
|---|---|---|
| 6-bit | 64 | 262,144 |
| 8-bit | 256 | 16,777,216 |
These counts are the arithmetic results of combining the available channel levels; they are not measured scores for a monitor. Intel gives the commonly cited figures as 262,144 colors for 6-bit and 16.7 million for 8-bit (Intel’s gaming monitor guide).

Frame rate control (FRC) varies nearby color levels over time—or across pixels—so the viewer perceives an intermediate shade. EIZO describes FRC as a way to generate additional gradations (EIZO’s display-gradation explainer). A 6-bit + Hi-FRC panel therefore approximates additional output levels; its native channel precision remains 6-bit.

Is native 8-bit visibly better?
Native 8-bit provides more actual levels per channel, but that specification alone does not establish that every viewer will see a difference in every image or that every native 8-bit monitor will look better overall. The cited technical explanations describe how FRC works; they do not establish a universal perceptual threshold or a controlled result showing how often people can distinguish the implementations.
Other display characteristics shape the image too, including color gamut, calibration and color accuracy, brightness, contrast, resolution, and refresh rate. VESA’s DisplayHDR criteria include bit depth alongside measures such as luminance, color gamut, and rise time (VESA DisplayHDR overview). HDR branding alone is not proof of native 8-bit panel depth.

How to check a monitor’s actual panel depth
- Find the exact model and regional variant. Read the manufacturer’s specification page or manual, rather than relying on a retailer’s abbreviated listing.
- Look for the implementation wording. Terms such as “native 8-bit,” “6-bit + FRC,” “8-bit + FRC,” and “Hi-FRC” distinguish different configurations. For example, Acer lists “8-bit+Hi-FRC” for its XV272U KF (Acer XV272U KF specifications).
- Ask the manufacturer when the specification is ambiguous. A listing that says “16.7 million colors” gives a color-count claim but does not, by itself, establish native panel depth. Intel advises checking with the OEM whether a monitor is native 8-bit or uses 6-bit with FRC or dithering (Intel color-depth support guidance).
Why might my computer report a different bit depth?
The panel’s native precision, the signal it accepts, and the computer’s current output setting are related but different facts. Available or reported color depth can depend on the graphics configuration, display support, and connection. Intel’s guidance and AMD’s color settings article discuss these configuration factors (Intel color-depth support guidance; AMD Radeon color settings).

Check the monitor’s exact manufacturer specification as well as the graphics driver, operating-system display settings, and connection. Conversely, a higher output setting does not establish that the panel itself is native 8-bit.

Which should you choose?
- Prefer native 8-bit when you want the more direct implementation and the rest of the monitor’s specifications and price suit you.
- Consider 6-bit + Hi-FRC if the complete monitor is a better fit. Its FRC implementation approximates additional gradations, but should not be mistaken for native 8-bit precision.
- For color-critical work, look beyond the bit-depth label. Check independent measurements of color accuracy and gamut, and consider the available calibration workflow. The cited sources do not identify a universally best monitor or a universal visible-difference threshold.
