The best handwriting-to-text app depends on what you are converting: notes written with a stylus inside an app, or handwriting already captured on paper, in a photo, or in a PDF. Apple Notes and OneNote offer documented ways to turn digital handwriting into editable text; Pen to Print is aimed at recognizing existing pages. The options below are use-case picks, not a tested accuracy ranking: there is no comparable independent benchmark for all eight.

Choose the right kind of handwriting conversion

Digital-ink conversion happens after you write with a finger or stylus in a note app. The app interprets the strokes and can produce typed, editable text. Some apps also let you search handwritten notes without changing the ink.

Handwriting OCR starts with a page that already exists: a notebook, photograph, or PDF. It attempts to recognize the writing in an image. A note app’s ability to convert its own digital ink does not mean it can transcribe a scan. Recognition depends on factors such as handwriting legibility, language, and image quality.

Best handwriting-to-text apps

1. Apple Notes — best built-in option for iPhone

Apple documents handwriting in Notes and a workflow for selecting handwriting and pasting it as typed text in another note or app. Transcription depends on a supported system language, so check that your iPhone language is covered before relying on the feature. This is the most straightforward choice if you already take handwritten notes in Apple Notes and want to avoid adding a separate notebook app.

8. Pen to Print — for handwriting already on paper

Pen to Print belongs to a different category from the digital-ink notebook apps: it is presented as an OCR option for existing handwritten pages. Its publisher’s material is commercially produced, so that makes it a specialized category choice, not evidence that it is the most accurate option. Test a representative page before using any OCR app for important records.

How to choose without relying on an accuracy ranking

  • Start with the source: choose a digital-ink note app for handwriting you are about to write; choose an OCR tool for a paper page or image.
  • Match the device: Apple’s documented workflow is for iPhone, Samsung Notes is a Galaxy-oriented candidate, and Goodnotes’ platform offerings do not guarantee identical features.
  • Check language coverage: Apple ties transcription to supported system languages, and OneNote requires handwriting-language support for the writing you want converted.
  • Check the output you need: editable typed text, searchable handwritten notes, and searchable text extracted from a scan are different outcomes.
  • Try a representative sample: use your own handwriting, language, and page quality before converting a large notebook or relying on OCR for important material. No shared independent test establishes one of these apps as the universal accuracy winner.

Why Microsoft Lens is not on this list

Microsoft says retirement of Lens on Android began January 9, 2026, and support ended after February 9, 2026. It is therefore not a current Android recommendation. Microsoft’s Android help also says text extraction from handwritten notes is limited to English. The iOS Lens documentation describes capturing documents and whiteboards and OCR/export options, but that documentation alone does not confirm current App Store availability; it should not be treated as a uniform Android-and-iPhone solution.

Microsoft’s lifecycle details: Retirement of Microsoft Lens. Its iOS capture documentation is at Scan documents with Microsoft Lens for iOS.
