The best habit-tracking app depends on what you need the app to do after you tap “complete.” Some are straightforward checklists; others turn tasks into role-playing games, enforce financial commitments, track measurable goals, or involve friends.
This list covers the eight apps identified in Forbes Health’s expert-recommended roundup, while updating platform, pricing and feature details where the developers’ current documentation differs from the older article. Prices can vary by country, operating system and promotion, so check the live app listing before subscribing.

1. Habitica: best for game-style motivation
Habitica is a good fit if a normal checklist feels too dull. It turns habits, recurring tasks and one-off jobs into an RPG-style system where completing work helps develop an avatar, obtain equipment and participate in quests.
Its three task types matter:
- Habits: Behaviors you can record multiple times a day or leave on an open schedule. They can represent positive actions, negative behaviors or both.
- Dailies: Repeated tasks assigned to a structured schedule. Missing them reduces your character’s health.
- To-Dos: One-time tasks. They do not reduce HP simply because they remain incomplete.
Habitica also supports parties and group monster battles, making it more useful for users who respond to social accountability and shared goals. It is available through a web interface as well as iOS and Android apps.

The core service is free, although optional subscriptions, gems and other in-app purchases are available. The official iOS store information lists examples including $4.99 monthly, $14.99 quarterly, $29.99 for six months and $47.99 annually, but local pricing may differ.
Choose Habitica if: rewards, avatars and group challenges will make you more likely to return.
Skip it if: game mechanics add distraction rather than motivation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2. Streaks: best for Apple users
Streaks concentrates on repeated completion rather than elaborate coaching. You can create up to 24 tasks, assign custom schedules, set reminders and view task statistics. Its strongest advantage is integration with Apple Health.
Health-linked tasks can use supported data such as steps, heart rate or blood pressure. That means a task can be completed from an imported health measurement instead of requiring a manual checkmark. However, Streaks does not automatically import every Health metric. You must grant permission and associate the relevant data type with the task you create.
Streaks works on iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad, Mac and Apple Vision Pro. Task sharing is also available, so it is not strictly a solo app.
Older comparison articles commonly quote a $4.99 price, but that should not be treated as current. Streaks’ official website does not display a current price; check the live App Store listing for your region.
Choose Streaks if: you already use Apple devices and want health data, reminders and a clean streak view.
Watch for: Health permissions. If a task does not update automatically, confirm that the task uses the correct Health category and that access is enabled in iOS.
3. stickK: best for serious commitment contracts
stickK is not a conventional habit checklist. Its central feature is a commitment contract: you define a goal, choose a timeline, set reporting requirements and decide what happens if you fail. You can involve a referee, supporters or financial stakes.

The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The important catch is the reporting deadline. You have a 72-hour reporting window. Failing to submit the required report in that period counts as an unsuccessful report. If you attached financial stakes, the designated payment account may be charged for that reporting period within 48 hours after the report is submitted.
Creating a commitment contract is free. Money is involved only when you choose financial stakes and report failure, but that consequence is precisely why you should read the terms before attaching a payment method.
Choose stickK if: an external referee, public commitment or financial consequence is more motivating than badges and streaks.
Skip it if: you want a low-pressure private tracker for flexible daily routines.

4. Strides: best for measurable goals
Strides is designed for goals that cannot be represented well by a simple done/not-done checkbox. It supports target goals, milestones and average-based tracking, along with reminders, notes, charts, templates and progress reports.
For example, you could track reading 12 books in a year, reaching a particular weight, averaging a number of workouts per week or saving toward a specific amount. The different tracker types let you record progress rather than merely mark a task complete.
The free plan allows you to track your top three goals and habits. Strides Plus adds unlimited goals and habits, progress reports, tags and filters, data export, goal notes, privacy lock, backups and sync across supported Apple devices. Current subscription choices include monthly, annual and lifetime plans, with prices shown in the app and varying by country.
To configure synchronization, go to Strides → Settings → Sync & Backup. iCloud Drive must also be enabled in the device settings. If data is missing on another Apple device, verify that both devices use the same Apple ID, iCloud Drive is enabled, iCloud has available storage and Sync & Backup is turned on. Large data sets may take time to appear.

Productive combines habit tracking with a more structured routine-building experience. Its feature set includes habits, programs, challenges, reminders, articles and progress statistics. You can create, complete, stop or pause habits, attach notes and review chains, perfect days and habit trends.
When creating an item, the app distinguishes between a Regular habit and a One-time task. That distinction is useful when your daily routine includes both recurring behaviors and temporary jobs.

6. Way of Life: best for quick logging and pattern analysis
Way of Life focuses on recording whether a behavior happened and reviewing the pattern over time. It offers reminders, streaks, weekly and monthly feedback, charts, graphs and—according to the referenced roundup—Excel export.
It supports both iOS and Android. The developer’s support documentation also explains how to restore premium access: on iOS, use Restore Purchase from the Setup page; on Android, use Go Premium.
Do not rely on an old fixed price such as $4.99 for premium. The developer says pricing can vary by platform and location. Also check migration options before changing from Android to iPhone or the other way around: Way of Life does not provide a simple direct data-transfer path between the two platforms.

- 52 Weeks Undated Planner : No preprinted fixed dates allow you to start planning at any week without wasting blank pages. You can pause recording and resume later freely, avoiding unnecessary page waste caused by interrupted use of dated planners.
- WEEKLY GOALS & FOCUS SETTING: Prioritize your core weekly objectives at the top of each page to clarify main tasks ahead of trivial affairs. This structure helps you cut down aimless busyness and keep your whole week’s work and life on track.
- DETAILED DAILY TO DO LIST: The page is divided into independent writing areas for Monday through Weekend. You can sort and record work assignments, study tasks and personal errands separately, so important schedules will not be forgotten or omitted.
- BUILT-IN HABIT TRACKER TABLE: Special grid area supports marking daily habit completion status, with columns for goal setting and weekly achievement statistics. It helps you intuitively track persistence progress without purchasing an extra separate habit journal.
- FLAT LAY SPIRAL BINDING: Double wire coil binding enables the planner to lie fully flat for smooth writing without flipping back. Compact lightweight body is easy to slip into backpacks and tote bags, suitable for office work, school study and travel arrangement.
Choose Way of Life if: you want fast manual entries and visual feedback about good and bad patterns.
Watch for: platform changes. Export or migration planning matters if you may switch between iOS and Android.
7. HabitShare: best for selective social accountability
HabitShare lets you share selected habits with friends without turning your entire routine into a public feed. Habits are private by default, and you choose which friends can see each one.
You can use the app alone, but its main advantage is the ability to receive encouragement and accountability from specific people. It supports reminders and flexible daily or weekly habits, and is available on iOS and Android.
The developer describes HabitShare as 100% free. The privacy model is worth emphasizing: sharing is controlled per habit, so you might share a workout goal with a friend while keeping a sleep or health-related habit private.
Choose HabitShare if: a friend’s quiet visibility will help you stay consistent.
Skip it if: you do not want any social element or do not have people who will use the accountability features.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Habit Tracker – Daily Goals: best for a simple iOS diary
The eighth entry needs a precise name because the App Store contains several unrelated apps called “Habit Tracker.” The app covered here is Habit Tracker – Daily Goals from Uniqo Lab.
It supports good and bad habits, volume or unit tracking, repeated reminders, habit ideas, statistics and charts. Weekly, monthly and yearly reports make it more like a diary of behavior than a streak-only checklist. Volume tracking is useful for habits such as drinking a measured amount of water or completing a specific number of repetitions.
Recommended Free Tools
The current listing is for iPhone and iPad and says No ads & no subscription. That conflicts with older descriptions that mention in-app purchases, so verify the listing before assuming that another app with the same name is being discussed.
For example, a separate app by Volodymyr Yahenskyi offers features such as iCloud sync, Apple Watch support, widgets and a Premium tier. It is not the same product as Uniqo Lab’s Habit Tracker – Daily Goals.
Choose it if: you want a straightforward iOS tracker with reports, charts and unit-based entries without a subscription.
Skip it if: you need Android support, cross-platform synchronization or social features.
How to choose the right habit app
- Decide whether you need a habit tracker or a goal system. For binary routines, Streaks, Way of Life or HabitShare may be enough. For measurable targets and milestones, consider Strides.
- Pick your motivation style. Habitica uses game mechanics, stickK uses consequences, HabitShare uses friends and Productive uses guided routines.
- Check your devices first. Streaks and Strides are primarily Apple choices. Habitica, Productive, Way of Life and HabitShare are better options when Android access matters.
- Check the data model. If you need volume, averages or milestones, do not settle for an app that only records yes or no.
- Review privacy and sharing settings. HabitShare offers per-habit sharing. Streaks’ Apple Health access is permission-based and limited to the data needed for tasks you create.
- Confirm current pricing before entering payment details. Several prices in older comparison articles are no longer reliable, particularly for Streaks, Strides and Productive.
Does tracking a habit guarantee that it will stick?
No. Tracking creates feedback and can make a behavior more visible, but it does not create a universal timetable for habit formation. The often-repeated “10 weeks” claim comes from an average discussed in earlier research, not a deadline that applies to every person or behavior. A useful app should make the desired action easier to remember and review; it cannot compensate for an unrealistic goal or an unusable routine.
FAQ
Which habit-tracking app is best overall?
There is no single best choice for every user. Streaks is a strong Apple-focused option, Habitica suits people who enjoy game mechanics, Strides is better for measurable goals, and HabitShare is the most relevant when friend accountability matters.
Which app is free?
Habitica has a free core service, HabitShare is described by its developer as 100% free, and the Uniqo Lab version of Habit Tracker – Daily Goals currently says it has no ads and no subscription. Other apps have free tiers or trials but reserve features for paid plans.
Can I use these apps on Android?
Habitica, Productive, Way of Life and HabitShare support Android. Streaks and Strides are Apple-focused. The Uniqo Lab Habit Tracker – Daily Goals listing covers iPhone and iPad, not Android.
What is the difference between a habit tracker and stickK?
A conventional tracker records behaviors and shows progress. stickK is built around a commitment contract: you set a goal, reporting schedule and optional referee, and you can attach financial consequences to unsuccessful reports.
The Bottom Line
Choose based on the behavior you want to change, not on the number of features. Habitica is the most distinctive choice for gamification; Streaks is the clean Apple and Health option; stickK is for high-accountability commitments; Strides handles measurable goals; Productive offers guided routines; Way of Life emphasizes pattern review; HabitShare adds controlled friend visibility; and Habit Tracker – Daily Goals keeps things simple on iPhone and iPad.
