The closest matches to Mass Effect are not all science-fiction shooters. The series combines a sci-fi setting with companions, relationships, role-playing combat, and decisions that can affect the story and its characters. These eight games each share some of that mix—but none reproduces the whole formula. Start with Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic for a classic space-fantasy party RPG, or choose Baldur’s Gate 3 for reactive companions and consequential choices in a very different combat system.

What makes a game like Mass Effect?

EA describes Mass Effect as a series where player choices influence relationships, story outcomes, and civilizations. Those elements provide a useful baseline for comparison. Setting, combat, and format are separate considerations: a game can feel familiar because of its companions and decisions while playing nothing like a third-person sci-fi shooter.

The ranking below favors overlap with the companion-and-choice role-playing experience, while noting each game’s biggest departure. Some picks are fantasy RPGs; one is an MMORPG rather than a single-player campaign.

1. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

Knights of the Old Republic is the strongest classic match if the appeal of Mass Effect is traveling through a galaxy with a party and making role-playing decisions along the way. StarWars.com describes a customizable party of nine characters, journeys between worlds aboard the Ebon Hawk, and Force abilities.

#1 Best Overall
Mass Effect Legendary Edition - PlayStation 4
  • One person is all that stands between humanity and the greatest threat it’s ever faced.
  • Relive the legend of Commander Shepard in the highly acclaimed Mass Effect trilogy with the Mass Effect Legendary Edition.
  • Includes single-player base content and over 40 DLC from Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, and Mass Effect 3, including promo weapons, armors, and packs - remastered and optimized for 4k Ultra HD.

The biggest difference is the setting and age: this is Star Wars space fantasy, not Mass Effect’s original science-fiction universe, and its powers draw on the Force. Expect a classic RPG rather than the more modern shooter-action feel of the later Mass Effect games. StarWars.com lists platforms on the game page; check that listing for the platform you use. The page also mentions a PS5 and PC remake, but that is an announcement, not a guarantee of current release status.

2. Dragon Age: Inquisition

Choose Dragon Age: Inquisition if you want the companion-centered side of BioWare role-playing more than the science-fiction setting. GamesRadar describes a cast of companions, a dialogue wheel, romance options, and room for players to shape the Inquisitor’s responses. That combination makes it a natural next stop for players who enjoy getting to know a crew and steering their character through conversations.

The major change is that this is a fantasy adventure, not a space opera. Its combat also differs from Mass Effect’s shooter/action-RPG approach, so the strongest overlap is in the party and dialogue experience rather than moment-to-moment play.

3. Baldur’s Gate 3

Baldur’s Gate 3 is a strong pick for players who want companions who react to decisions, relationships that develop over the journey, and choices that leave marks on the world. Larian’s official page highlights those features alongside the game’s Dungeons & Dragons fifth-edition rules.

The biggest difference is combat: Baldur’s Gate 3 uses turn-based tactical battles, not the real-time shooter/action-RPG style associated with Mass Effect. It is also a fantasy RPG governed by D&D 5e rules. Larian lists a physical deluxe edition on its official page; check that page and local retailers for the correct platform, edition, regional availability, and current stock.

4. The Outer Worlds 2

For a newer science-fiction RPG with companion interactions and room for player freedom, consider The Outer Worlds 2. GamesRadar characterizes it as a semi-open-world single-player RPG built around corporate satire. That makes it a fit if you want a science-fiction setting and character interactions, though the available description does not establish that its companions or choices work exactly like Mass Effect’s.

5. Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 offers a character-led science-fiction story in a dystopian setting, with personal quests and romance paths. Its relationships can be a draw if your favorite parts of Mass Effect are getting to know characters and seeing romantic possibilities develop.

The biggest difference is the structure and setting: this is a dystopian city RPG centered on V, not a galaxy-spanning squad adventure. Romance possibilities depend on the player’s version of V. A relationship guide also notes that updates added more holo conversations and romantic hangouts; check current version and platform information if those details matter to your purchase.

Mass Effect Trilogy - Playstation 3 (Renewed)
  • Over 75 hours of story content, plus Mass Effect 3's critically acclaimed multiplayer mode
  • Create and customize your own character with his or her appearance and skills, then play your Commander Shepard through all three Mass Effect games
  • Experience an amazingly rich and detailed universe where your decisions have profound consequences on the action and the outcome
  • Build a personalized arsenal with powerful weapons complete with their own upgrades and modifications
  • Unleash devastating abilities and skills as you command and train an elite squad

6. Starfield

Pick Starfield if what you want next is a broad space-exploration RPG. GamesRadar’s 2026 sci-fi RPG guide includes it as a space RPG and describes it as polarizing; that is the publication’s characterization, not a settled measure of player opinion.

Its biggest difference for a Mass Effect fan is emphasis. The recommendation is for players seeking a wider exploration experience, not a close substitute for a tightly squad-centered campaign. If companion arcs and a focused crew story are your priority, the higher-ranked games are closer matches.

7. Star Wars: The Old Republic

Star Wars: The Old Republic is worth considering if you want a story-driven Star Wars RPG with class, alignment, and narrative-path choices—and are comfortable playing online. EA describes it as an MMORPG, so it is not a single-player replacement for Mass Effect.

Mass Effect 3 (Renewed)
  • Battle as Commander Shepard on many worlds across the galaxy as you unite the ultimate force to take back the Earth before it's too late
  • Enormous enemies and take on a smarter type of foe that will consistently challenge your best combat tactics and put you on the edge of your seat
  • Customize your Commander Shepard, your squad and weapons to engage the enemy on your terms
  • Allows the option to import decisions from both of the previous games and supports optional use of the Kinect Sensor for Xbox 360
  • Experience a new emphasis on melee combat, movement and an improved cover system

That format is the key trade-off: the draw is choosing a character path within an online game, rather than following one self-contained single-player campaign. Treat it as an option for players specifically interested in an online role-playing world, not as the closest match in structure.

8. Divinity: Original Sin 2

Divinity: Original Sin 2 is a good alternative if you enjoy party-based role-playing, tactical battles, and choices but do not need a science-fiction setting. GamesRadar’s RPG guide praises its choices, combat, and narrator; those are editorial judgments, but they point to the parts of the experience that may appeal to RPG fans.

The biggest difference is that this is a fantasy game built around tactical turn-based combat, not a sci-fi shooter. Its overlap with Mass Effect is in role-playing with a party and making decisions, rather than setting or combat style.
