There is no universal speed winner between Google Public DNS (8.8.8.8) and Cloudflare DNS (1.1.1.1). A head-to-head test can find Google faster on one network, but without its location, method, and measurements, that result cannot predict yours. Published evidence also shows resolver speed is only one part of the comparison: privacy terms, filtering, encrypted-DNS options, and CDN routing can matter just as much.

What 8.8.8.8 and 1.1.1.1 do

Both are public DNS resolvers: they translate a domain name, such as a website address, into information a device uses to connect. Google Public DNS uses 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4. Cloudflare’s standard resolver uses 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1. Changing a device or router’s DNS setting changes which resolver handles its DNS lookups; it does not increase the internet connection’s bandwidth.

Which resolver is faster?

It depends on the network and what is measured. DNS latency is the time needed to resolve a name; it is not the same as the time a full webpage takes to load. A site also depends on the connection, server response, content, and the CDN edge selected for delivery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Resolver latency can vary with location, ISP routing and peering, cache state, the mix of queries, and the time measurements are taken. A result from one test is therefore useful evidence about that test’s network, not a general ranking.

  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

What published measurements show

A 2025 study compared Google, OpenDNS, Cloudflare, and Quad9 across interactions with four CDNs: Akamai, Cloudflare CDN, Edgecast, and Fastly. Under the study’s conditions, Google and OpenDNS had higher DNS latency than Cloudflare; the authors attributed the difference to lower cache hit rates. The same study found a penalty in Cloudflare’s client-to-edge mappings with Akamai. Those results illustrate why query latency alone does not establish which resolver will deliver the best experience for an individual user. Read the study.

Privacy: compare the providers’ stated policies

Cloudflare publishes resolver-specific privacy commitments, including that it does not use personal data from the resolver for advertising, limits source-IP retention, and deletes truncated IP addresses and resolver logs within 25 hours. It also describes limited anonymized sharing with APNIC. These are Cloudflare’s published commitments, not a matched independent audit comparing the two services. The policies describe different data practices, so “better privacy” depends on which commitments and handling rules matter to you. The available evidence does not establish a contemporaneous, matched independent audit that would support declaring one provider the overall privacy winner.

TP-Link Dual-Band AX3000 Wi-Fi 6 Wireless Gigabit Internet Router for Home
  • Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
  • A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
  • Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
  • Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
  • Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.

Encryption: use a protected DNS connection

Both services document encrypted DNS options. Google documents DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH) and DNS-over-TLS (DoT); Cloudflare documents DoH, DoT, and Oblivious DNS-over-HTTPS (ODoH). Encryption protects DNS queries between the client and resolver, but it does not make all internet activity anonymous. You also need to confirm that your device or router is actually configured to use the encrypted protocol; changing only the resolver address does not necessarily enable it.

Cloudflare describes ODoH as adding a privacy layer so that no single entity can see both the requester’s identity and query. Cloudflare’s encryption documentation explains its available protocols. Google’s Public DNS documentation covers its encrypted DNS support.

Filtering: standard DNS is not the same as a family filter

Google says Public DNS generally does not filter unwanted sites. Cloudflare offers separate Families resolver addresses for malware filtering, with an option that also filters adult content. These are distinct configurations from the standard 1.1.1.1 resolver; selecting standard Cloudflare DNS does not automatically apply those family filters. See Cloudflare’s setup instructions and Google’s FAQ.

Reliability, workplace networks, and practical trade-offs

Google says its free Public DNS service has no service-level agreement. Both providers publish information about global anycast services, but a particular user’s route and ISP configuration can shape performance. Google also cautions that Public DNS may limit access to private workplace domains; follow your organization’s network policy rather than changing managed DNS settings on your own. Google Public DNS FAQ.

How to choose on your own connection

  1. Measure from the network you care about. Compare the resolvers using repeated DNS query measurements, rather than relying on one result or a test from another location.
  2. Separate lookup time from page-load time. A lower DNS latency does not guarantee that every site loads faster, especially when CDN mapping differs.
  3. Decide what you want from privacy. Read each provider’s published data-collection, retention, and sharing terms and choose based on the commitments you prefer.
  4. Check encrypted-DNS support and configuration. Confirm whether your device or router uses DoH or DoT; consider ODoH only where your client and chosen setup support it.
  5. Choose filtering deliberately. If malware or adult-content filtering is a requirement, configure Cloudflare’s relevant Families endpoint rather than assuming either standard resolver filters sites.
  6. Respect managed-network settings. On a workplace device or network, keep the DNS configuration required by your organization, particularly where internal domains are involved.
