In US federal law, the 700 MHz band spans 698–806 MHz. That is a range of radio frequencies, not the name of a particular technology or a guarantee that every frequency in it is available for the same service. The allocations differ within the band and from country to country.
What does 700 MHz mean?
MHz, or megahertz, is a unit of frequency. “700 MHz” is a convenient label for a band of radio frequencies; it does not refer to one exact frequency, operator, or wireless technology. The US statutory definition covers 698–806 MHz. The United States Code defines the 700 MHz band using those endpoints.
How is the US 700 MHz band divided?
The band is not one uninterrupted block with one uniform use. The FCC identifies separate commercial-service and public-safety portions, as well as guard-band spectrum. Its listed service segments are:

| FCC segment | Frequency range |
|---|---|
| Lower 700 MHz Service | 698–746 MHz |
| Upper 700 MHz service portions | 746–758 MHz; 775–788 MHz; and 805–806 MHz |
| Public-safety portions | 758–775 MHz and 788–805 MHz |
These segments and allocations are described in FCC 23-22. The FCC also describes primary allocations for fixed, mobile, and broadcasting across broader ranges that form part of the band. A statutory band boundary, an allocation, and a national band plan are related but different things: the overall 698–806 MHz definition does not mean every frequency in that span is available to every device or service.

Does “700 MHz” mean LTE, 5G, public safety, or TV?
No. The label alone does not identify a technology or a specific use. The FCC’s US band plan contains distinct service and public-safety segments, and the relevant allocation depends on the exact frequency and applicable rules. The band name by itself also does not establish device compatibility, coverage distance, or building penetration; those depend on technical and regulatory details beyond the label.
How does the meaning differ by country?
“700 MHz” does not have one universal set of frequency assignments. For example, Ofcom’s UK mobile-spectrum table, last updated 6 May 2026, lists a 700 MHz uplink at 703–733 MHz and downlink at 738–758 MHz; it also lists 758–788 MHz in the 700 MHz row. These are UK mobile-spectrum entries, not a replacement for the US statutory definition.

The ITU’s 2022 report on national spectrum implementation describes the US 700 MHz band plan as 698–806 MHz and notes that national plans can differ, including in uplink and downlink assignments. In border regions, differences can require coordination. A frequency or device described as “700 MHz” should not be assumed to work across countries without checking the local band plan and device specifications.
