If sound stopped immediately after you installed a Realtek driver, first check that Windows is using the right output device and that it is not muted. Then work through Windows’ audio troubleshooter, Device Manager, and driver recovery options. Use the audio driver published for your exact PC or sound-card model; a generic Realtek download may not be right for every computer.
1. Check the output device, volume, and connections
A changed output selection can look like a driver failure. Select the speaker icon on the taskbar, open the sound output list, and choose the speakers or headphones you want to use. Check the system volume and mute state, then open Volume mixer and make sure the affected app is not muted or turned down.
Also check physical connections: confirm wired speakers or headphones are plugged into the correct jack and powered on, and reconnect or test them if practical. This step only rules out common routing and volume issues; it does not establish that the Realtek driver is working.

2. Run Windows 11’s audio troubleshooter
Microsoft recommends starting Windows 11 audio troubleshooting in the Get Help app. Open Get Help, search for audio or sound troubleshooting, and run the audio troubleshooter. Follow its prompts and test playback when it completes.
The troubleshooter can identify common configuration or device issues, but it may not resolve a missing or incompatible model-specific driver. If it does not restore sound, continue to Device Manager.
Microsoft’s missing audio output device guidance describes the Get Help starting point.

3. Check whether Windows detects the audio device
Open Device Manager and expand Sound, video and game controllers. Look for the Realtek audio device or another audio device that may represent the system’s output.
- If the device is disabled, right-click it and choose Enable device, if that option is available.
- If the device is not listed, choose View > Show hidden devices, then Action > Scan for hardware changes.
- If the device has a warning icon or error code, note the exact message. It can help identify whether Windows has a driver or device problem.
Windows may not detect an audio output device when its driver is missing, outdated, disabled, or not loading correctly, according to Microsoft’s device-detection guidance. If scanning does not bring the device back, proceed to driver recovery.
4. Roll back the Realtek driver if the problem began after installation
If sound stopped directly after the driver change and Device Manager lists the audio device, try returning to the previous driver version:

- External computer speaker in Black (set of 2) for amplifying PC or laptop audio
- USB-Powered from USB port of PC or Laptop
- In-line volume control for easy access
- Blue LED lights; metal finish and scratch-free padded base
- Bottom radiator for “springy” bass sound
- In Device Manager, right-click the audio device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver, if available.
- Follow the prompts, restart Windows, and test audio.
Windows offers rollback only when a previous driver version is available. If the button is unavailable, use the manufacturer’s driver for your exact model or try the reinstall steps below. Microsoft also discusses rollback in its guide to audio that stops working after an update.

5. Install the driver for your exact PC or sound-card model
For an OEM computer, get the audio driver from the computer maker’s support page. For a separate sound card, use its manufacturer’s support page. Select the exact model and Windows version before downloading, then install the recommended audio driver and restart.
Do not assume that one Realtek package suits every PC. Manufacturers can provide packages selected for a particular model and Windows version, and the reviewed Microsoft guidance directs users to the PC or sound-card manufacturer for the appropriate driver. If you do not know the model, check the PC’s label or system information before choosing a download.

Microsoft’s instructions for an undetected audio device also direct users to the device manufacturer’s driver.
6. Reinstall the device driver or try Windows’ generic driver
If updating the driver did not help, Microsoft’s general audio guide describes uninstalling the audio device driver and restarting so Windows can attempt to reinstall it. Menu wording may vary by device and Windows build.
- In Device Manager, right-click the audio device and select Uninstall device. If Windows offers a checkbox to remove the driver software, consider whether you have the correct manufacturer driver available before selecting it.
- Restart the PC and check whether Windows reinstalls the device and sound returns.
- If sound is still absent, return to Device Manager, right-click the audio device, and select Update driver > Browse my computer for drivers > Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer.
- If listed, try the generic Windows audio driver, then restart and test.
The generic driver is a troubleshooting alternative, not a replacement guaranteed to preserve every feature of the manufacturer’s package. Microsoft documents uninstalling, reinstalling, and trying a generic driver in its general sound and audio troubleshooting guide.

7. Restart Windows audio services
If Windows detects the device and its driver but playback still does not start, restart the audio services:
- Open the Start menu, search for Services, and open the Services app.
- Find Windows Audio, right-click it, and select Restart.
- Find Windows Audio Endpoint Builder and restart it as well.
- Test playback. If you changed or reinstalled a driver during troubleshooting, restart the PC too.
Microsoft lists audio services that fail to start correctly as one possible reason sound stops after an update. See its audio update troubleshooting guidance.
If Windows detects the device but sound is quiet
When playback works but is unusually quiet, focus on levels and processing rather than treating the symptom as a missing-device fault:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Check the app’s level in Volume mixer.
- In the output device’s sound properties, disable audio enhancements and test again.
- Try a different default audio format in the device’s advanced sound settings.
These are targeted checks for low or quiet audio, not fixes for a device that is absent from Windows. Microsoft’s low or quiet sound guide covers mixer levels, enhancements, format, and driver recovery.
When to contact the PC or sound-card manufacturer
If none of the steps restore sound, gather the exact PC or sound-card model, Windows version and build, Realtek device name and driver version, and any Device Manager error code. Give those details to the manufacturer’s support team or use its model-specific support page to confirm the appropriate driver. There is no single Realtek package established as suitable for every computer.
Microsoft’s general audio guide also mentions System Restore as a later recovery option. A restore point can undo broader system changes made since that point, not just an audio driver change, so consider its system-wide effect before using it.
