There is no single set of hidden switches that will make every older iPhone faster or dramatically extend its battery life. These seven built-in settings are worth reviewing because they help you identify battery drain, manage background activity, control location access, limit data use, and reduce interruptions. Paths can vary by model and iOS version; if a menu differs, search for the setting by name in the Settings app, as Apple’s iPhone User Guide explains.
1. Battery usage: find what is actually draining power
Start with the evidence on your phone rather than turning off features at random. Open Settings > Battery and review the battery usage information for apps and system activity. The display can help identify which apps or behaviors deserve a closer look.
Apple lists background activity, low cellular signal, and notifications among possible contributors to higher battery use. If one app stands out, consider whether it needs to run or send alerts in the way it currently does. A phone spending time in a weak-signal area may use more power trying to maintain a connection; changing unrelated settings may not address that cause. 2. Battery Health & Charging: distinguish wear from settings
On iPhone 14 and earlier, check Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging. If the Battery Health screen shows Service, Apple says to consider battery service. This is a different issue from an app using power in the background: changing settings cannot restore lost battery capacity.

Menu labels and availability can vary on other models or iOS versions. Use Settings search for “Battery Health” if the path is not present. Apple’s guidance is available in its battery-drain article.
3. Low Power Mode: trade convenience for longer time between charges
On iPhone 14 and earlier, the path is Settings > Battery > Low Power Mode. Newer models may place power controls under a Power Mode submenu. Low Power Mode reduces background activity and changes several behaviors together, including Background App Refresh, email fetch, automatic downloads, brightness, visual effects, and Auto-Lock, which is set to 30 seconds. Apple says it switches off when the iPhone charges to 80% or higher. Consult Apple’s Low Power Mode instructions for current model-specific details.

Use it when extending the current charge matters more than having everything update immediately. The tradeoff is deferred activity and a changed display or lock experience; it is not a free performance upgrade or a guaranteed fix for every battery problem.
4. Background App Refresh: keep timely updates where they matter
Background App Refresh lets supported apps refresh content when you are not actively using them. Review the app list and consider limiting refresh for apps whose updates can wait, while retaining it where timely background content matters. The exact menu path can vary by iOS version, so search Settings for “Background App Refresh” if needed.

Low Power Mode turns Background App Refresh off, and Low Data Mode does too. That connection can help explain why an app’s content may not update in the background when either mode is enabled. Apple’s descriptions of these behaviors are in its Low Power Mode guidance and Low Data Mode guidance.
5. Location Services: choose access app by app
Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services to review which apps can use your location. Where the available choices permit, select access that fits the app’s purpose—such as while using the app rather than always—or turn it off for apps that do not need it. Location-dependent features may be limited if access is removed, so keep it for functions you rely on, such as navigation.

Apps using location in the background may prompt you with a reminder, giving you a chance to reconsider their access. Apple explains the controls and their implications in its Location Services privacy guidance. Avoid switching off Location Services globally unless you are comfortable losing location features across apps.

Notifications can wake the iPhone, and Apple identifies them as a possible contributor to battery use. Review notification settings by app and reduce alerts you do not need, while keeping important calls, messages, and reminders. This is a selective way to cut interruptions; Apple does not provide a universal battery-savings figure for turning off notifications.

Low Data Mode is useful when you need to conserve mobile data or limit activity on a particular Wi-Fi network. Apple provides separate controls for mobile data and Wi-Fi, so the change need not apply identically to every connection. Find the relevant options through Settings search for “Low Data Mode” if your menu path differs.
The mode reduces background network use, turns off Background App Refresh and automatic downloads or backups, pauses some iCloud updates, and can lower streaming quality. Use it when data conservation is the priority, not as a universal battery tweak. Apple documents the separate connection controls and effects in its Low Data Mode article.
Choose changes by the problem you want to solve
