There are several ways to play strategy games without relying on Xbox Game Pass, but they are not equivalent: EA Play and Ubisoft+ offer publisher catalogs, PlayStation Plus offers a console-focused catalog, GeForce NOW streams supported games you already own, and GOG or a PC storefront lets you buy games outright. Which route fits depends on your platform, country, target titles, and whether you want ongoing access or ownership.

Catalogs change, and a strategy category page does not guarantee every listed game is included. Microsoft’s UK strategy-filtered listings, for example, mix Game Pass-included games with EA Play listings, separately priced titles, and free games. Check each game’s access label for your region and platform before subscribing or buying (Microsoft Store strategy listings).

How to choose a Game Pass alternative for strategy games

Start with the games you actually want, then check whether each service includes them on your device and in your country. A service may have strategy games without having the particular games you expect, and cloud access does not necessarily mean a game is included in a subscription.

  • Catalog or ownership: Publisher and console subscriptions provide access to selected catalogs under their terms. GOG and other PC storefronts sell individual games; GeForce NOW can stream supported titles connected to your libraries.
  • Platform and region: Availability, included titles, and streaming support vary by service and country. Confirm the game’s platform and current listing before paying.
  • Existing bundles: EA Play is already included with PC Game Pass and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, so eligible subscribers should compare incremental cost rather than pay twice for access.

Seven routes worth considering

1. EA Play: check whether you already have it

EA Play is a publisher catalog, not a broad strategy-game replacement for Game Pass. Its value depends on whether its current selection contains the games you want. It may be the easiest option to try if you already subscribe to an eligible Xbox plan: Electronic Arts says EA Play is included with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate for Xbox and PC, and with PC Game Pass for PC. It is not included with Core or Standard, and EA Play Pro is a separate offering. PC access requires Windows and the EA app (EA Help: EA Play with Xbox Game Pass).

For readers in the United States, Xbox’s EA Play page displayed standalone EA Play at $5.99 per month when reviewed on October 4, 2026. That is a US listing, not a global price guarantee; Xbox says availability and benefits can vary by platform and territory and may change (Xbox EA Play).

2. Ubisoft+ Classics: a lower-cost Ubisoft catalog route

Ubisoft+ Classics provides a catalog of selected Ubisoft games. It is distinct from Ubisoft+ Premium, and a Classics offer accessed through a platform or plan should not be confused with Premium’s separate Ubisoft Store catalog. Xbox’s UK plan comparison describes Ubisoft+ Classics as including 50+ iconic games in the covered plan context; that figure does not establish the contents of every regional or standalone offer (Xbox UK plan comparison).

Ubisoft’s US plan page showed Classics at $79.99 per year, equivalent to $6.67 per month when billed annually, on October 4, 2026. These are US annual-billing figures, not a promise of a month-to-month rate or of the same price elsewhere. Check the current plan and included games before subscribing (Ubisoft+ US plans).

3. Ubisoft+ Premium: for Ubisoft’s broader PC catalog

Premium is the more expansive Ubisoft option for players interested in its PC catalog and newer releases. Ubisoft’s US page listed 145+ PC games and day-one releases, with Premium at $179.99 per year—an annual-billing equivalent of $15 per month—on October 4, 2026. Ubisoft names Anno among its major franchises, which may make the service worth checking for fans of that series, but the specific game and edition still need to be verified in the current catalog.

Those prices and catalog details are time- and region-specific. Ubisoft also notes that some premium-edition content may be excluded, so an included game does not necessarily include every add-on or bonus in its premium edition. Compare the actual edition and terms for the game you want (Ubisoft+ US plans; Ubisoft help: access to games and content).

4. PlayStation Plus Extra or Premium: a console-first catalog

PlayStation Plus is a catalog option for players using supported PlayStation platforms. Extra and Premium provide access to catalog games under the applicable plan terms; Premium also includes cloud streaming where supported. Neither label guarantees a particular strategy title in every market, and the supported devices and streaming conditions matter. Check the live catalog and the service’s streaming details for your country and hardware before choosing a plan (PlayStation Plus games).

5. GeForce NOW: stream supported games you own

GeForce NOW is a cloud-streaming layer, not an all-you-can-play replacement for a subscription catalog. NVIDIA describes syncing existing PC game-store libraries to access games you own on GeForce NOW. That does not mean every game in a connected store works: the title must be supported by the service, and the relevant store account and game entitlement must be available. Check NVIDIA’s current supported-game information and device requirements before relying on it for a particular strategy game (NVIDIA: how to play games on GeForce NOW).

6. GOG: buy DRM-free PC strategy games

GOG is a storefront, not a subscription catalog. It offers a strategy category of games for individual purchase, including DRM-free options. Buying is a better fit if you want to keep access to selected purchases rather than depend on a catalog remaining available while you subscribe. Check each game’s product page for its current price, operating-system compatibility, and any specific requirements; the category itself does not promise a fixed selection or price (GOG DRM-free strategy games).

7. Buy individual games through a PC storefront

Another route is to purchase strategy games individually from a PC storefront rather than pay for a catalog. This model is useful when you have a short, specific list and prefer to retain access to purchases under the store’s terms. No single storefront is the right choice for every title: check the game’s current platform support, regional availability, and purchase terms. Do not assume a storefront purchase includes cloud streaming; streaming support is a separate question, as GeForce NOW’s supported-title rules illustrate.

Check a game before you subscribe

  1. Write down the exact titles and platform. “Strategy games” can mean very different things, and a title may have separate PC and console editions.
  2. Open the service’s live listing for each game. Confirm whether it is included, separately sold, or only playable through a supported streaming entitlement.
  3. Check the plan and country. Verify the billing term, availability, launcher or console requirement, and any cloud-streaming conditions.
  4. Compare the access model with your preference. Choose a subscription for a changing catalog, a storefront purchase for individual games, or GeForce NOW only when you own a supported title and want to stream it.
