You can improve an audio file for free, but no single effect makes every recording sound better. First identify the problem—steady background noise, an imbalanced tone, clicks, unwanted sound between words, excessive volume swings, or a level that misses your delivery target—then use the least processing that fixes it. The examples below use Audacity’s documented effects. Work on a copy, compare with the original, and undo any change that makes the sound worse.

Choose an effect for the problem you can hear

These seven techniques address different defects and goals; they are not a checklist to apply to every file. A useful starting point is to listen for the specific issue before changing anything.

What you hear or need Try Main trade-off
Steady hiss, hum, or other consistent background noise Noise reduction Too much can create bubbling or metallic artifacts
Excess rumble, boominess, or harshness EQ or a filter Changes tonal balance; an overly broad adjustment can make the audio less natural
A click or other localized defect A suitable repair effect Repairing the wrong region or overdoing it can damage wanted sound
Low-level unwanted sound in pauses Noise gate Can cut off quiet words or room ambience if set too aggressively
Large differences between loud and quiet sections Compression Reduces dynamics and may lower the output level
A specified maximum peak level Peak normalization Changes overall level, but does not target perceived loudness
A specified perceived loudness Loudness normalization May change peaks and, if channels are normalized independently, stereo balance

Audacity’s Noise Removal & Repair documentation describes noise removal and repair tools, while its Filter Curve EQ documentation covers tonal shaping. The effect names and controls can vary between versions; consult the manual for the Audacity version you use.

1. Reduce steady background noise cautiously

Noise reduction is most useful when the unwanted sound is relatively constant, such as a steady hiss or hum. It is not a general-purpose way to remove every sound behind a voice: changing background sounds can be difficult to separate cleanly from speech.

Use a light setting and compare the result with the original. Audacity warns that strong noise reduction can produce a bubbling or metallic quality that is more distracting than the noise. Reduce the amount or undo the effect if voices begin to sound watery, smeared, or unnatural. The Audacity Manual’s noise-removal guidance recommends using the smallest setting that solves the problem.

2. Use EQ to address a specific tonal problem

Equalization (EQ) changes the balance of frequencies. It can help when an identifiable tonal issue is present—for example, low-frequency rumble or a voice that sounds too boomy or harsh. Audacity’s Filter Curve EQ is one documented option.

Make a small, targeted adjustment and listen again. EQ cannot recover detail that was never captured, and changing too much of the frequency balance can make a voice thin, muffled, or unnatural. If you cannot name the tonal problem you are trying to fix, leave the EQ unchanged.

3. Repair clicks or other localized defects

A brief click or other isolated blemish calls for a repair tool suited to a local defect, not broad noise reduction across the entire recording. Audacity groups repair options with noise-removal tools in its Noise Removal & Repair documentation.

Listen around the defect before and after repair. A tool intended for a short damaged spot is not a substitute for correcting a continuous noise problem, and repair can alter wanted audio if the selected area includes it.

4. Gate unwanted low-level sound in pauses

A noise gate reduces or mutes sound below a level threshold, making it useful for unwanted low-level sound in gaps between speech or other foreground audio. It does not remove noise that overlaps with the wanted sound, and it is not the same as noise reduction.

SABRENT USB External Stereo Sound Card Adapter, Plug & Play (AU-MMSA)
  • PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
  • WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
  • TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
  • FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
  • SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.

Use it only when the gaps are the problem. A gate set too aggressively can make word endings disappear or cause the background to switch unnaturally between quiet and audible. Audacity’s noise-removal overview identifies gating among the approaches covered there.

5. Compress overly wide dynamics

Compression reduces the level of audio above a threshold. It can help when a recording jumps between very loud and very quiet passages, but it also reduces dynamic contrast. Compression does not restore audio that was clipped or missing in the source.

Audacity notes that compression can reduce the result’s level; you may need makeup gain or a later normalization step to reach the desired output level. Its Volume & Compression documentation explains the available level effects. Avoid adding compression simply to make an already consistent recording louder.

6. Peak-normalize when a peak ceiling is the goal

Peak normalization adjusts the selected audio so its highest peak reaches a chosen level. It is appropriate when you need to set a maximum peak, but it does not make two recordings equally loud to a listener if their average loudness or dynamics differ.

Audacity’s Normalize manual gives −1 dB as the default peak target. The manual explains that this leaves headroom, including for later lossy encoding; it is a documented default, not a guarantee that every format or delivery specification calls for that setting.

7. Loudness-normalize when perceived level is the goal

Loudness normalization targets measured loudness rather than the highest peak. It is the more relevant choice when a delivery specification asks for a loudness target or when you need material to match a stated perceived level. Audacity’s Loudness Normalization manual identifies −23 LUFS as the EBU R 128 target and a reasonable spoken-word broadcast default.

Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 4th Gen USB-C Audio Interface

  • Studio-quality sound: With a huge 120dB dynamic range, the newest generation of Scarlett uses the same converters as Focusrite’s flagship interfaces, found in the world's biggest studios
  • Never lose a great take: Scarlett 4th Gen's Auto Gain sets the perfect level for your mic or guitar, and Clip Safe prevents clipping, so you can focus on the music

  • With Scarlett 4th Gen, you have all you need to record, mix and master your music: Includes industry-leading recording software and a full collection of record-making plugins

That broadcast reference is not a universal target for every platform. The same manual notes that streaming services usually publish targets a few LU higher; check the platform’s current specification before choosing a target. For ordinary stereo material, leave independent stereo-channel normalization off unless you have a reason to adjust the channels separately, because doing so changes stereo balance.

Apply level changes after editing and cleaning

Do noise cleanup, repairs, EQ, and other edits before final peak or loudness normalization. Later processing can change the peaks that level effects acted on, so normalizing too early may leave the final file at a different level than intended. Audacity makes the same ordering recommendation in its Volume & Compression documentation.

  1. Keep an untouched copy. Save or duplicate the original before processing.
  2. Fix the audible defect. Choose only the technique that matches the problem; listen after each change.
  3. Set the final level last. Use peak normalization for a peak ceiling or loudness normalization for a loudness target.
  4. Compare at a similar playback level. A louder version can seem better simply because it is louder; judge clarity and artifacts as well as volume.
