You can make smart home sensors less noticeable without compromising their job: place them out of the way, but keep their sensing area clear, contact parts aligned, and readings representative of the space. These seven locations work for different sensor types; follow the instructions for your exact model and test it after mounting.
1. In a room corner for broad motion coverage
A corner can make a motion sensor less conspicuous while giving it a broad view of the room. Ring recommends corner placement and notes that a sensor may detect side-to-side movement more readily from there. Keep the sensing area unobstructed, and avoid direct sunlight and nearby heat sources. Furniture, curtains, airflow, and heat can also affect detection or contribute to false alarms. Ring’s placement guidance, Xiaomi’s instructions, and Leviton’s installation guide all emphasize preserving a clear view and considering placement conditions.
2. Along a hallway or room’s main path
Place a motion sensor where people are likely to pass, with its view crossing their path rather than pointing along it. Leviton advises considering the direction of movement when positioning a passive infrared (PIR) sensor; Ring also recommends high-traffic locations. Mounting height is model-specific, so use the device’s instructions rather than treating one height as universal. Ring’s guidance and Leviton’s guide explain these placement considerations.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3. Behind an item you specifically want to monitor
If your goal is to detect movement of a large valuable item, a motion sensor behind it may be useful: Ring gives a television as an example of an object whose movement can trigger detection. This placement is for monitoring that item, not for covering the room. Do not hide the sensor behind an object if it blocks the view needed for broader motion detection. Ring’s motion-sensor guidance describes this use.

- ZIGBEE STANDARD COMPATIBLE MOTION SENSOR: Works with compatible Zigbee hubs or Echo devices with Zigbee hub built-in, such as Echo (4th Gen), Echo Plus (1st Gen and 2nd Gen), Echo Studio, Eero 6, Eero Pro 6, Home Assistant, SmartThings 2015/2018, Aeotec, Hubitat, Homey Bridge, Homey Pro, Third reality Hub and Third Reality Smart Speaker. Zigbee Hub Required.
- CREATE ROUTINES: Using the Alexa app, create your own routines that are triggered when motion is detected. Customize Alexa messages like “Welcome Home” or “Motion Detected in Living Room” when motion is detected.
- SMART LIGHT CONTROL: If you have a smart light or smart plug connected to the Alexa service, you can create a routine in the Alexa app that will enable it to automatically turn on when motion is detected (and off when no motion is detected for a period of time that you specify).
- HASSLE-FREE SETUP: Installs in a few seconds. Just make sure device in paring mode and compatible Echo device automatically discovers it by saying “Alexa, discover devices”. Only for indoor use.
- GREAT RANGE AND LONG BATTERY LIFE : Capable of detecting motion up to 20 feet (6 meters) away. 2 AAA batteries can last for 2 years in typical usage.
4. On the inside edge of a door or window
A contact sensor’s two parts can be mounted discreetly on the fixed frame and moving door or window. Keep them aligned when the opening is shut and within the model’s allowed gap. Avoid the hinge side and spots where the device could be struck. Contact sensors can also monitor other objects that open and close. See Wyze’s contact sensor setup guide and DO’s installation guidance.
5. Inside a cabinet, safe, or other opening object
A contact sensor can monitor an interior object such as a cabinet, safe, trash can, or cookie jar. Attach one part to the fixed side and the other to the moving side so opening separates them and closing brings them back together. Check the manufacturer’s spacing and alignment instructions; a discreet installation that keeps the parts too far apart may not register reliably. DO’s guide covers contact-sensor placement, while Wyze describes contact sensors for openings and objects that open and close.

- 【App Real-Time Remote Monitor】The smart motion sensor is compatible with Smart Life App and Tuya Smart App. No matter where you are, you can monitor the home security in real-time.
- 【Receive Alert Notification】 You will receive an App push alert notification when the wifi motion sensor detects any movements. With 128° detect range and 6 meters detect distance, the wireless motion sensor can be the first line of your home security defence.
- 【Supported Voice Commanded】The motion sensor is compatible with Alexa. Using the Alexa app, create your own routines that are triggered when motion is detected. Customize Alexa messages like “Welcome Home” or “Motion Detected in Living Room” when motion is detected.
- 【Smart Light Control】Turn on light automatically when you come back. If you have a smart light or smart plug connected to the App, you can create a smart routine in the Smart Life app that will enable it to automatically turn on when motion is detected (and off when no motion is detected for a period of time that you specify).
- 【Widely Application】On the one hand the motion sensor can be used to convenient your life. Such as, turn on the living room light automatically when you come back home. On the other hand, it can be regards as the home security system to protect property safety.
6. At floor level near likely leak sources
Put a leak sensor where water is likely to reach it and collect, such as near a sink, toilet, water heater, dishwasher, refrigerator, or HVAC equipment. A low point can help if the floor slopes. Keep the detector out of a walkway where it could be kicked or moved. After placing it, test the detector and confirm that its app or hub reports the expected alert. DO’s guidance discusses leak-sensor placement.

Place a temperature or humidity sensor at a height that represents the area you want to measure. Avoid locations affected by direct sunlight, a vent, a local heat source, or other conditions that could skew the reading. DO says its temperature/humidity sensor may be used in a shaded or semi-exposed outdoor spot, but not in direct rain or sun; environmental ratings vary by product. Check the rating and placement instructions for your model before using it outdoors. DO’s guide and Leviton’s instructions address environmental and placement considerations.

What to check before hiding a sensor
- Motion sensor: Keep its field of view clear; furniture, curtains, walls, sunlight, airflow, and heat can interfere with detection or contribute to false alarms.
- Contact sensor: Align the two parts and stay within the specified gap when the opening is closed.
- Leak sensor: Put it on the floor where water is likely to pool, rather than somewhere concealed from a potential leak.
- Temperature or humidity sensor: Choose a location that reflects the area being measured, and respect the device’s environmental rating.
- Any sensor: Check model-specific mounting height, spacing, range, and hub requirements, then verify its status or alert in the app after installation.
For example, TP-Link lists the Tapo T30 KIT on its UK product page with one motion sensor, two contact sensors, a hub, batteries, and adhesive pieces. Its listed dimensions are 42.3 × 42.3 × 34 mm for the motion sensor and 61.4 × 37.5 × 12.3 mm for the contact sensor; regional bundles may differ. See TP-Link’s UK product listing. Whatever devices you use, check ecosystem and hub compatibility as well as the installation requirements for each sensor.
