A 7-bit data code assigns meanings to seven-bit combinations. Seven bits allow 128 distinct code positions, which can represent control functions and graphic characters such as letters, digits, and symbols. The phrase can describe a general kind of coded character set or a specific national code, so the intended mapping depends on the standard being discussed.
What does “7-bit data code” mean?
In the general sense, a 7-bit data code is a coded character set in which each character or control function is represented by a combination of seven bits. Ecma International’s ECMA-6 describes a set of 128 characters, including controls and graphic characters, and allows options for national and application-oriented versions.
The term can also be used as the name of a particular code. A UK document identifies the “United Kingdom 7-bit Data Code” as the code specified by BS 4730. In that context, the name refers to a specific mapping rather than every seven-bit character set. The cited document does not reproduce the complete BS 4730 character table, so its exact assignments should not be inferred from the general definition.

Each bit has two possible values, 0 or 1. With seven bits, the number of possible combinations is 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2, or 128. ECMA-6 organizes its 128 positions in a table with eight columns and sixteen rows; the row and column together identify a position.

These positions are not necessarily all printable characters. A code set can assign some combinations to control functions and others to graphic characters, including letters, digits, and symbols. What a particular position means depends on the character set’s mapping.
Is a 7-bit data code the same as ASCII?
Not necessarily. “7-bit” describes the size of the code combinations, not one universally fixed set of character assignments. ECMA-6 is a standards example with options for national and application-oriented versions, while the UK document names a code tied to BS 4730. Identify the named standard or context before assuming which characters a code represents.

How can a 7-bit code be stored in an 8-bit byte?
A seven-bit code can be recorded in an eight-bit storage unit if the relevant format specifies how to handle the extra bit. For the UK recording context documented by NPSO Limited in NPSO Standard 27, the coded character occupies bit positions 1 through 7 and bit position 8 is zero. That is the convention stated in that document; it should not be treated as a universal rule for all files or transmission systems.
In a serial protocol, details such as framing, parity, and bit transmission order may also matter. The label “7-bit” alone does not establish those transport rules.

How to identify the intended code
- Look for a standard or jurisdiction. A reference to ECMA-6, BS 4730, or a particular country can point to a specific mapping or set of options.
- Check what the code positions represent. A seven-bit set may include control functions as well as printable characters.
- Separate character coding from storage and transmission. A byte-recording convention or serial protocol is an additional specification, not part of the phrase’s basic definition.
