For a general subtitle search, start with OpenSubtitles; for release-specific matching, try SubDL. Addic7ed and TVsubtitles.net focus on TV, while YIFY Subtitles, Podnapisi, and MovieSubtitles.org fill narrower movie or language needs. If you are adding captions to your own YouTube video, YouTube Studio is the official route. The right file still has to match your video’s cut and release to stay in sync.

Which site should you try first?
For a movie or show with no obvious release match
Try OpenSubtitles first when you want the broadest general starting point. A large database cannot guarantee a file for every title, cut, or language, so treat it as a place to search rather than a promise of availability. The modern .com site and legacy .org site are distinct interfaces; check which one you are using. OpenSubtitles’ subtitle guidance explains that files depend on user uploads, so a title may have multiple matches or none.
For a subtitle timed to a specific video release
SubDL is designed for searching by title and language and choosing a subtitle timed to a particular video release. Its official description says no account is needed to search or download. A SubDL snapshot dated August 29, 2026, lists 6,272,106 individual subtitle files, 459,609 movies and TV shows, and subtitles in 92 languages; these are dated catalog counts, not fixed or independently verified totals. SubDL also lists desktop software that can match a local video filename and save a subtitle, an Android/Android TV player, a VLC extension, Bazarr integration, a Stremio add-on, and paid AI subtitle translation. For television episodes
Addic7ed is the more targeted choice when you need a TV episode subtitle and release timing matters. Its listings are described as syncing with HDTV, WEB-DL, and BluRay releases. TVsubtitles.net offers a separate episode-organized TV archive, including older series and current-season entries; it is ad supported. If one archive does not have the episode or release you need, search the other.
For movies or particular language searches
YIFY Subtitles is a sensible match when your movie file follows a YIFY/YTS-style release. It is oriented toward movies rather than TV. Podnapisi is worth trying for Russian, Polish, Czech, Slovak, Croatian, Serbian, Bulgarian, Slovenian, and other European-language searches; its Slovenian origin is associated with a strength in Slavic-language subtitles. MovieSubtitles.org is another movie-only option if a larger database has no suitable file, though its catalog is described as smaller and more reliant on manual uploads.

How to choose a subtitle that stays in sync
Subtitle files are often made for a particular release, not every copy of a film or episode with the same title. A subtitle can appear too early or too late if the video is a different cut or its timing differs. Before downloading, compare the details available for the subtitle and video:

- Release name: Look for matching release-group or distribution labels in the video and subtitle listing.
- Edition and runtime: Extended, theatrical, or otherwise different cuts may have different timing.
- Resolution and frame rate: These can help distinguish releases and explain timing differences.
- Language: Confirm the subtitle’s language and, where relevant, whether it is a translation or same-language captions.
If the timing still drifts, first try a subtitle explicitly matched to your exact release. If the offset is constant, adjust subtitle delay in your video player; a delay adjustment can correct timing but cannot reliably fix a file whose timing progressively diverges from a different cut or frame rate. How to add a downloaded SRT file
The most common downloaded format is .srt. .vtt and .ass also appear, particularly in creator and advanced-player workflows. Many players automatically detect an SRT placed beside the video with the same base filename—for example, Episode.mkv and Episode.srt. If the player does not pick it up, use its subtitle menu to load the file manually.
Load subtitles in VLC
- Save the subtitle file to your device and, if relying on automatic pickup, put it in the same folder as the video with the same base name.
- Open the video in VLC. If the subtitle does not appear, choose Subtitle > Add Subtitle File… and select the downloaded file.
- If it appears but is consistently early or late, use VLC’s subtitle delay controls to adjust the offset. If the offset keeps changing, find a subtitle made for the exact video release instead.
Download subtitles for your own YouTube video
For a video you own or manage, use YouTube Studio rather than a third-party subtitle-download site. YouTube Help says subtitle and caption files contain the spoken text and timestamps for when each line should appear. Studio supports uploading a timed or untimed subtitle file, auto-syncing a transcript, typing captions manually, and automatic captions when that feature is available. Captions can help deaf or hard-of-hearing viewers and people who speak another language. See YouTube’s instructions for adding subtitles and captions.
Third-party sites are mainly relevant when you need captions for a locally owned or otherwise legitimately obtained video; YouTube Studio is the direct workflow for publishing captions on your own channel.
