The best plants to grow on a wall depend on how you plan to green it, how much sun it receives, your local climate and how much root space and water you can provide. Clematis and grapevines need slender supports; climbing hydrangea suits many shaded sites; herbs and compact perennials can work in living-wall pockets with reliable watering. These are seven useful options, not a universal ranking—check local hardiness and invasive-plant guidance before choosing.

First choose how the wall will support plants

“Growing on a wall” can mean three different systems. Matching the plant to the system prevents a common mistake: expecting a vine that needs wires to cling to bare masonry, or treating shallow wall pockets like ordinary garden soil.

  • Direct greening: A self-attaching climber grows against the façade. Confirm the plant is suitable for the wall and your location.
  • Indirect greening: Wires or a trellis sit in front of the wall, leaving an air gap. This suits many climbers and trained fruit, but the support must be sturdy enough for the plant at maturity.
  • Living wall: Plants grow in pockets, planter boxes, or a panel system. These systems do not require climbing plants, but their limited root volume makes watering and irrigation central to success.

The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) describes these approaches and notes that smaller living-wall panels and grow-bag-style products are available for DIY projects, while specialist systems may use plant cells and drip irrigation: RHS guidance on green walls.

Match the plants to the wall’s conditions

Assess the wall’s light and moisture before selecting a plant. The RHS advises choosing shade-tolerant plants where a wall gets less than half a day of midsummer sun. A wall under eaves or in a rain shadow may stay drier than nearby ground, while exposed walls can create their own challenging conditions. Group plants with similar light and watering needs, especially in a panel or pocket system.

Also identify the kind of support a vine uses. Clematis wraps its leaf stalks around slender supports; tendril climbers grab onto wires or trellis; twining vines wind their stems around a support. Sprawling plants such as climbing roses usually need to be tied or woven in. Check the plant’s mature height and spread before planting: a vigorous vine can quickly exceed the space or support provided. See the RHS guide to choosing climbers and the University of Maryland Extension vine guide.

Seven plants to consider for a wall

1. Clematis: flowers on a slender trellis or wire

Clematis is a choice for a supported flowering vine, not a plant to rely on for self-clinging to broad masonry. Its leaf stalks wind around narrow supports, so use a trellis, wire, or similar structure with slender elements. Choose a variety suited to your climate and the wall’s light, and make sure the support can carry the vine as it grows.

2. Coral honeysuckle: a flowering climber where it is regionally appropriate

Coral honeysuckle (Lonicera sempervirens) is an example of a regionally suitable flowering vine: University of Maryland Extension identifies it as native to Maryland. That does not make it a universal recommendation for every region. Check local native-plant and invasive-species guidance, then provide a support appropriate for its growth habit.

3. Climbing hydrangea: a candidate for a shaded wall

University of Maryland Extension identifies several climbing hydrangeas as among the most suitable vines for shaded sites. They can be slow to establish before flowering well, so this is a longer-term choice rather than a quick screen. Confirm that the particular plant is suited to your climate and that the wall has enough space for its mature growth.

4. Grapevine: edible fruit on a sunny, supported wall

A grapevine can turn a sunny wall into a productive growing space if you install wires or a trellis. The RHS notes that grapevines use tendrils to cling to supports; they should not be expected to attach to bare masonry. Choose a grape variety suitable for your climate, and plan to train and prune it so growth stays within the available space.

5. Black-eyed Susan vine: seasonal color with a regional caution

Black-eyed Susan vine (Thunbergia alata) is a fast-growing, twining ornamental often grown as an annual in cold-climate areas. Wisconsin Extension says it does best in full sun and fertile, moist soil, grows on a trellis or other support, and flowers from midsummer to frost. Under ideal conditions it can reach up to 8 feet in a season, though Wisconsin Extension says it more often grows 3–5 feet in the Midwest. In many warm locations it has become invasive, so people in frost-free regions should check local guidance before planting. See Wisconsin Extension’s black-eyed Susan vine guidance.

6. Compact bunch grasses or perennials: for an appropriate living-wall panel

Some living-wall panels can suit compact plants rather than climbing vines. In a Cal Poly student survey of a south-facing green wall, the preferred growth habit for that particular site was a creeping or dense mat that stayed within two feet of the wall. Bunch grasses and perennials were examples suited to its high-light, low-water conditions. That finding describes one site, not a general rule for all panels or climates; use plants selected for the panel’s light, root volume and irrigation conditions.

7. Culinary herbs: useful in sunny pockets with dependable water

The RHS identifies herbs as candidates for green-wall systems. Options include basil, chives, oregano, sage and thyme. Herbs generally do best in full sun and fertile, moisture-retentive, well-drained soil, but a wall pocket has limited soil volume and can dry out quickly. Choose herbs suited to your local conditions and make sure the planter can be watered reliably.

Plant and maintain the wall for the long term

For climbers and wall shrubs, the RHS recommends planting about 45 cm (18 inches) from the base of the wall so rain can reach the roots and the roots are less constrained by foundations or rubble. Spring is the RHS’s preferred planting time for green-wall systems. Water newly planted climbers regularly through at least their first growing season. For plants in containers, water when the compost surface dries; give extra attention to pots beneath eaves or in the wall’s rain shadow.

Plan for the mature plant, not just the space it occupies on planting day. Confirm the support is strong enough, leave room for pruning and training, and check the plant’s local hardiness and invasive status. Kansas State University horticulture expert Matt McKernan cautions that “Not all vining plants will take to vertical gardening the same,” and notes that elevating plants can increase airflow in ways that may help prevent disease. These benefits do not replace choosing a plant and system suited to the site: Kansas State University on vertical gardening.
