The best hanging-basket plants are those that suit the light where the basket will hang and the time you can give it for watering. These seven options offer a practical mix of flowering trailers and decorative foliage; they are a shortlist, not a universal ranking, because results vary by cultivar and local conditions.
Seven plants to consider for a hanging basket
Trailing plants soften the rim and create the cascading look many gardeners want. Check each plant’s label for cultivar-specific guidance, especially when the basket’s exposure or local climate differs from typical growing conditions.
1. Trailing petunia
A familiar flowering spiller for a colorful basket. Choose a trailing cultivar suited to the amount of sun at the hanging site and to your local climate. The University of Illinois Extension lists trailing petunias among basket plants, and the RHS describes trailing petunias as suitable for hanging baskets. Illinois Extension; RHS.

2. Calibrachoa
This petunia-like plant has a mostly trailing habit and suits sunny baskets. The RHS recommends calibrachoa for pots and hanging baskets; deadheading can help promote continued flowering. RHS calibrachoa profile.

3. Trailing fuchsia
Pick a trailing form when you want flowers to tumble over the basket edge. The RHS says fuchsias grow well in sun or dappled to partial shade, and trailing forms suit baskets. RHS fuchsia guide.
4. Ivy-leaved pelargonium
This trailing flowering plant is suited to a sunny, well-drained position. It does not thrive in wet compost and will not flower in shade, according to the RHS. RHS guide to trailing pelargoniums.
5. Bacopa
Bacopa is a trailing option for mixed displays. The cited Illinois Extension guidance lists it among basket plants but does not establish cultivar-level light requirements, so follow the plant label for the variety you buy. Illinois Extension.

6. Verbena
Illinois Extension includes verbena among trailing basket choices. Select a cultivar for the basket’s exposure and check local nursery guidance for its hardiness in your area. Illinois Extension.
7. Sweet potato vine
Choose sweet potato vine for cascading foliage rather than as the main flower display. Its leaves add color and texture alongside flowering plants. Illinois Extension.
How to choose plants for your basket
Before buying, consider the conditions at the basket itself—not just the general light in your yard. Also decide whether you want flowers, foliage, or a combination, and how often you can check the compost.

- Sunlight: Match the plants to the hours and type of light at the hanging spot. Calibrachoa and ivy-leaved pelargoniums are particularly suited to sunny conditions; fuchsias can also suit dappled or partial shade.
- Display: For flowers, choose flowering trailers such as petunia, calibrachoa, fuchsia, pelargonium, bacopa, or verbena. For foliage contrast, use sweet potato vine as an accent.
- Shape: A basket viewed from below benefits from trailing and rounded plants. For one viewed at eye level, place taller plants in the middle and shorter or trailing forms near the rim, as Illinois Extension advises.
- Care: Combine plants with compatible growing conditions. Baskets dry quickly, so consider whether you can monitor moisture, particularly during hot, sunny weather.
Other trailing choices listed by Illinois Extension include scaevola, dichondra, ivy, and lysimachia; they can be alternatives where locally suitable. Illinois Extension’s hanging-basket guidance also describes the “thriller, filler and spiller” arrangement: a focal plant, bushy plants to fill space, and trailers to soften the edge. For a basket mainly seen from underneath, emphasize spillers and rounded forms rather than relying on a tall central focal plant.

Prepare the container
For a seasonal display, the RHS recommends peat-free multipurpose compost. A wire basket needs a liner; coir and moss are options. Gather a basket, liner, plants, trowel, and watering can with a fine rose before planting. RHS planting guide; Illinois Extension.
Arrange and plant
- Set trailing plants near the edge so they can spill over the rim.
- If the basket will be seen at eye level, put taller plants centrally and shorter or trailing plants toward the edge.
- Water slowly and thoroughly before hanging the basket.

Keep up with watering and flowers
Hanging baskets can lose moisture quickly, especially wire baskets lined with moss or coir. Check compost moisture and adjust watering for the weather, basket material, plant size, and exposure rather than relying on one schedule. In hot, sunny summer weather, the RHS says baskets may need watering daily. RHS basket guide; Illinois Extension.
Deadhead spent flowers to encourage continued bloom where appropriate; the RHS notes that deadheading can prolong flowering for many bedding plants. If you have several baskets, drip irrigation may be worth considering, but adjust timers and drippers as the weather and plants change. RHS basket guide; RHS planting guide.
