For most beginners, Wix is the best all-purpose choice. Choose WordPress.com instead if your site will mainly be a blog or newsletter; choose Squarespace or Framer for a design-led portfolio; Carrd for a compact one-page résumé or landing page; Google Sites for the simplest no-cost site; and Webflow when detailed layout control is worth a steeper learning curve.
Three of the seven—Wix, WordPress.com, and Google Sites—can publish a useful basic website without a paid website subscription. That does not necessarily mean a free custom domain, ad-free pages, or unrestricted business features. The distinction between a free plan, a free trial, a platform subdomain, and a custom domain is the key to choosing correctly.

What “free” means in this comparison
A free website plan normally gives you hosting and an address on the builder’s domain. For example, your address may look like yourname.wixsite.com/site, yourname.wordpress.com, sites.google.com/view/your-site, yourname.framer.website, or a similar platform-owned address. You can publish without paying for website hosting, but the address is less memorable and may look less professional.
A custom domain is an address such as yourname.com. Owning or registering that domain is separate from building the pages. Most builders require a paid plan to connect one, even when they offer a free publishing tier. Google Sites supports custom-domain mapping, but setup can depend on domain ownership verification, the account type, and Google Workspace configuration. You may still need to pay a domain registrar.
A free trial is different again: it lets you use paid features temporarily, after which you must subscribe or lose access to some features. Squarespace’s 14-day trial is not a free-forever website plan.
Finally, a website builder is the editing and publishing interface, hosting is the infrastructure that delivers the site, a domain is its address, and a content-management system organizes posts, pages, media, and other content. These functions are bundled together by hosted builders, but they are not the same thing. WordPress.com is hosted WordPress; self-hosted WordPress requires separate hosting, installation, updates, security, and maintenance.
The 7 best personal website builders
1. Wix — best overall for most beginners
Wix is the safest general recommendation when you want a conventional personal website with several pages and room to add features later. Its permanent free starting point, large template library, drag-and-drop editor, and AI-assisted site creation cover the needs of a résumé site, freelance homepage, personal bio, service site, or small portfolio without requiring you to learn HTML or CSS.
On the free plan, your site uses a Wix address and displays Wix branding. Connecting a custom domain and unlocking more advanced features requires a paid plan. Treat the free tier as a way to publish and validate the site structure, not as a guarantee that a professional business site can remain completely free.
Choose Wix if: you want multiple pages, visual editing, a broad template choice, and the option to add forms or business features as the site grows. The Wix website builder is the strongest default for someone who has not yet settled on a specialized publishing workflow.
Look elsewhere if: your main goal is a serious blog, you need unusually precise responsive layout control, or you want a minimalist one-page site with almost no interface overhead.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
2. Squarespace — best for polished portfolios and personal brands
Squarespace is a strong choice when presentation matters more than having a free plan. Its professionally designed templates, integrated hosting, and AI builder are suited to photographers, writers, consultants, artists, designers, and other people whose website is part of their personal brand.
The important limitation is cost: Squarespace provides a 14-day trial without requiring a credit card, but it does not provide a permanent free website plan. After the trial, you need a paid website plan to keep the site active. Annual plans include a free custom domain for the first year when the plan and current promotion qualify; the domain renews under the provider’s applicable terms after that period.
Choose Squarespace if: you want a cohesive visual system and would rather start from a polished template than build every detail yourself. A Squarespace portfolio builder makes more sense than a free platform when a custom domain and finished presentation are priorities from launch.
Look elsewhere if: you need a genuinely free site, want a high-volume publishing workflow, or prefer extensive low-level layout control.

3. WordPress.com — best for blogs, newsletters, and future growth
WordPress.com is the most sensible long-term choice when your “personal website” may become a blog, newsletter, publication, knowledge base, or larger content hub. Its hosted environment removes much of the server maintenance associated with self-hosted WordPress while retaining a mature publishing and extension ecosystem.
The free plan publishes at a WordPress.com subdomain and displays advertisements to visitors. A custom domain requires a paid plan. The current pricing information lists the Personal tier with 6 GB of storage and a free domain for one year when billed under the applicable annual offer. Promotions, renewal pricing, plan availability, and features can vary, so confirm those details before checkout.
Choose WordPress.com if: publishing articles, organizing categories, collecting newsletter subscribers, or expanding your content library matters more than having the simplest visual editor. A WordPress.com personal website gives you a better foundation than a presentation-first builder when the site will be updated frequently.
Look elsewhere if: you only need a static résumé, want complete control over the underlying server, or strongly dislike advertising on a free site. For complete technical control, self-hosted WordPress is a separate option—not the same product as WordPress.com—and comes with additional hosting and maintenance responsibilities.

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
4. Carrd — best for a fast one-page personal site
Carrd is deliberately narrow: it is built for simple, responsive, one-page websites. That focus makes it a good match for a résumé, link page, personal landing page, event page, compact portfolio, or “coming soon” site that does not need a traditional navigation structure.
The free Basic experience is useful for trying the platform and publishing a straightforward page. For a serious public-facing site, Carrd’s paid options are more practical. The official pricing information used for this update lists Pro Lite at $9 per year and Pro Standard at $19 per year. Pro Standard adds features such as custom-domain URLs, forms, widgets, embeds, analytics, meta tags, and other controls that turn a simple page into a more complete landing page.
Choose Carrd if: your content can fit naturally on one scrolling page and you value low cost and speed over a large feature set.
Look elsewhere if: you need a blog, many separate pages, complex navigation, a large media library, or a full content-management workflow. Carrd’s simplicity is its advantage, but it is also the reason it should not be treated as a general-purpose replacement for every builder on this list.

Google Sites is the best fit when the priority is basic publishing at no subscription cost rather than visual sophistication. It supports personal and business sites, templates, multiple pages, publishing, and custom paths. It is especially practical for a simple résumé, team or project page, resource hub, event information site, or personal page that already relies heavily on Google’s ecosystem.
Google documents support for connecting a custom domain, but the process is not identical for every account. Domain ownership verification, administrator permissions, and Google Workspace configuration can affect the setup. A custom domain also remains a separate registration expense unless you already own one.
Choose Google Sites if: you want a no-cost, low-maintenance site with pages, basic navigation, and straightforward sharing or collaboration. It is the least complicated of the three primary free picks when design flexibility is not a major concern.
Look elsewhere if: you need a distinctive visual identity, advanced forms, sophisticated analytics, strong blogging tools, or detailed control over typography, spacing, and responsive behavior. Google Sites is functional, but its publishing and design controls are more limited than those of dedicated website builders.

6. Framer — best for visually ambitious personal sites
Framer is aimed at people who care about modern visual composition, motion, and a design-oriented workflow. It is a good candidate for a creative portfolio, designer homepage, or personal brand that needs more visual ambition than a basic template-driven site typically provides.
The free plan provides a Framer subdomain, 1 GB of bandwidth, and design-page capabilities. A custom domain requires a paid plan. Framer’s official guidance positions the free tier for hobbyists and personal projects, while its Basic plan—listed at $10 per month in the pricing information used here—is generally the more appropriate level when a portfolio needs its own domain.
Choose Framer if: you are comfortable making design decisions and want a portfolio that emphasizes layout, animation, and visual presentation. The Framer portfolio builder is more compelling for a design-conscious creator than a basic free site builder.
Look elsewhere if: you want a conventional blog-first workflow, a generous free business site, or the least technical route to a basic multi-page website. As with other free tiers, the Framer subdomain and usage limits can make the free plan better for experimentation than for a final professional identity.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →7. Webflow — best for designers who need layout control
Webflow gives designers more control over structure, responsive layout, styling, and interactions than beginner-oriented builders generally expose. That control makes it suitable for a designer portfolio or a personal site where the visual system itself is part of the work.
The free Starter plan publishes to a Webflow.io subdomain and includes limited CMS functionality, two static pages, 1 GB of bandwidth, and 50 form submissions. The Basic site plan is listed at $15 per month when billed yearly and adds a custom domain along with substantially higher page and bandwidth limits.
Choose Webflow if: you are willing to learn a more advanced visual design system and want fine control over responsive layouts. A Webflow visual website builder can be a strong portfolio choice when demonstrating design craft matters more than a short setup process.
Look elsewhere if: you want to publish quickly with minimal learning, need many pages on the free tier, or mainly want to write posts and newsletters. Webflow is powerful, but that power comes with more decisions and a steeper learning curve than Wix, Google Sites, or Carrd.

Which three are actually free?
The headline’s three free picks are Wix, WordPress.com, and Google Sites. They can all publish a basic personal website without a paid website subscription, but each makes a different compromise:
- Wix: the most flexible general-purpose free option, but the site uses Wix branding and a Wix subdomain, and important business features are paid.
- WordPress.com: the strongest free choice for ongoing publishing, but the free site uses a WordPress.com subdomain and shows visitor-facing ads.
- Google Sites: the simplest no-cost option, but it provides less control over design and content presentation.
Carrd, Framer, and Webflow also offer free tiers. They are not excluded because they lack free publishing; they are excluded from the article’s three primary free recommendations because their free offerings are better understood as limited one-page use, hobby projects, branded-subdomain publishing, or platform testing. Squarespace offers a trial rather than a free-forever website plan.
How to choose the right builder
- Define the site’s job. A résumé or link page can be one page. A blog needs a publishing system. A portfolio may prioritize image presentation and visual control. A freelancer may need several service pages and a contact form.
- Decide whether “free” is a hard requirement. If it is, start with Wix, WordPress.com, or Google Sites. If a professional custom domain is important immediately, include paid plans in the budget rather than judging a free subdomain as equivalent.
- Estimate the page and content count. Carrd is ideal when one page is enough. Wix, Squarespace, and Google Sites suit ordinary multi-page sites. WordPress.com is the better fit when the number of posts will keep growing.
- Choose your design-control level. Google Sites and Wix reduce the amount of technical design work. Squarespace emphasizes a cohesive template system. Framer and Webflow reward more deliberate design work with greater visual control.
- Check the features you need before building. Confirm custom domains, forms, embeds, analytics, meta tags, storage, bandwidth, page limits, and advertising rules on the exact plan you intend to use. A feature listed on a platform’s marketing page may belong only to a paid tier.
- Think about the next year, not only launch day. Moving a static page is usually manageable; moving a growing blog, media library, forms, or design system can take more effort. WordPress.com is the most natural growth path for content-heavy publishing, while Wix is the broader path for a conventional personal or service site.
- Review the final address and presentation. Test the site on a phone, confirm that contact details work, check every navigation item, and decide whether platform branding or a subdomain is acceptable for the audience you want to reach.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use my own domain on a free website builder plan?
Usually not. Wix, WordPress.com, Framer, and Webflow require a paid plan to connect a custom domain. Carrd adds custom-domain URLs with Pro Standard. Google Sites supports custom-domain mapping, but account setup and ownership verification can vary, and registering the domain may still cost money.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Is Squarespace free?
Squarespace offers a 14-day trial without requiring a credit card, but it does not offer a permanent free website plan. You need a paid plan to keep the site active after the trial.
Should I choose Wix or WordPress.com for a personal site?
Choose Wix for a conventional multi-page site with visual editing and flexible page types. Choose WordPress.com if the site will primarily be a blog, newsletter, publication, or growing content hub.
Is WordPress.com the same as self-hosted WordPress?
No. WordPress.com is a hosted service that handles much of the underlying operation for you. Self-hosted WordPress requires separate hosting and greater responsibility for installation, updates, security, backups, and maintenance.
Which builder is best for a one-page résumé?
Carrd is the most focused option for a one-page résumé, link page, or compact portfolio. Google Sites and Wix can also handle a résumé, but they make more sense when you expect to add multiple pages.
The Bottom Line
Start with Wix for the broadest beginner-friendly personal site. Pick WordPress.com when publishing and future content growth matter most. Use Squarespace or Framer for a design-first portfolio, Carrd for a compact one-page site, Google Sites for the simplest free option, and Webflow when advanced visual control justifies a steeper learning curve. The best builder is the one that matches the site’s intended complexity—not the one with the longest feature list.
