The best free image-hosting website depends on what you need to do with the image. Choose Imgur for fast public sharing and community reach, ImgBB for copy-ready direct links and embed codes, Postimages for forum and website hotlinking, imgbox for simple long-lived hosting, Flickr for a photography portfolio, Cloudinary for developer-controlled delivery, and Wikimedia Commons for freely licensed or public-domain media.

These services are not interchangeable. Some are image beds for links, some are photo communities, one is a developer media platform, and one is a licensing-focused public repository. The limits and policies below were checked against the services’ official information on August 11, 2026; free-plan terms can change.

Quick comparison

Service Best for Important free-plan detail Main drawback
Imgur Quick public sharing and community reach Up to 50 uploads per hour; non-animated files up to 50 MB; animated files and videos up to 200 MB Compression, public exposure, and weak archival guarantees
ImgBB Direct links, BBCode, and HTML embeds 32 MB upload limit; supports albums, resizing, and several formats Ad-supported free interface and limited long-term guarantees
Postimages Forums, blogs, and website hotlinks Free uploads up to 32 MB; free hotlinks up to 1,280 pixels Not intended for genuinely private collections
imgbox Simple, long-lived image hosting JPG, GIF, and PNG files up to 10 MB; advertises unlimited storage space and time Lower file limit and narrower format support
Flickr Photographers and public portfolios Up to 1,000 uploaded items; no more than 50 non-public photos or videos Free-account content, download, and commercial-use restrictions
Cloudinary Websites, apps, APIs, and image optimization 25 monthly credits shared across transformations, storage, and bandwidth More technical and usage-metered than ordinary image hosts
Wikimedia Commons Public-domain and freely licensed media Designed for reusable educational media, not personal storage Uploads must meet licensing and educational-scope requirements

1. Imgur: best overall for quick sharing

Imgur is the strongest all-purpose choice when you want to upload an image quickly, share a link, or let a public audience discover it. It is especially suitable for memes, screenshots, GIFs, and casual image sharing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Imgur supports JPEG, PNG, GIF, APNG, TIFF, MP4, MPEG, AVI, WEBM, QuickTime, Matroska, FLV, WMV, and related formats. Non-animated images can be up to 50 MB. Animated images and videos can be up to 200 MB, although videos may not exceed 180 seconds. Uploads are limited to 50 images per hour, but Imgur does not impose an account-wide upload limit.

Seagate 2TB Portable Hard Drive | USB 3.0 (STGX2000400)
  • Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

There is an important quality distinction: non-animated uploads larger than 1 MB from anonymous users or 5 MB from account holders are lossily compressed. If preserving the original image matters, Imgur is not an ideal source of archival masters.

Privacy and visibility

Anonymous uploads are hidden from public galleries and can be accessed through their direct URLs. That is hidden by link, not private storage: anyone who obtains the URL can view and download the image. Public posts can appear in Imgur search, on your profile, and in the wider Imgur community.

Imgur also removes EXIF metadata from uploaded images. That can be useful if you do not want camera location and device metadata distributed with the file, but it also means the uploaded copy is not a metadata-preserving backup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Imgur if: you want familiar public sharing, broad format support, a generous file ceiling, or community discovery.

Avoid relying on it if: the image is confidential, must retain original quality and metadata, or is your only copy. Imgur has announced removal of some old, unused, inactive anonymous content, so anonymous uploads should not be treated as permanent archives.

2. ImgBB: best for direct links and embed codes

ImgBB is a practical choice when the next step is copying a URL into a forum post, support ticket, blog, or HTML page. Its upload interface provides direct image links as well as BBCode and HTML thumbnail embed codes, which removes much of the manual work involved in embedding an image.

The free interface lists a 32 MB upload limit and supports JPG, PNG, BMP, GIF, TIF, WEBP, HEIC, AVIF, and PDF files. You can create albums, resize or edit an image during upload, use an image URL as the input source, and set an optional automatic deletion time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That combination makes ImgBB particularly convenient for temporary screenshots, forum attachments, draft blog images, and situations where several link formats are useful. Check the generated code before publishing: a thumbnail embed and a direct full-image URL serve different purposes.

Users who need more capacity or developer features can compare ImgBB Pro, which is advertised as adding unlimited space, direct linking, image replacement, API access, and a 64 MB per-image limit. Those are paid-tier features, not benefits of the free plan.

Choose ImgBB if: you want the fastest path from upload to direct link, BBCode, or HTML embed.

Watch out for: the ad-supported interface and the lack of a strong reason to treat the free service as your only long-term archive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Postimages: best for forum and website hotlinking

Postimages is designed specifically around hosting images for forums, websites, blogs, and social media. It is a good fit when you need an image URL that can be pasted into an external page rather than a photo-community profile.

Rank #2
Seagate Portable 1TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0 for PC, Mac, PlayStation, & Xbox, 1-Year Rescue Service (STGX1000400) , Black
  • Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

The free service allows uploads up to 32 MB and states that it is available indefinitely. Free accounts provide hotlinked images up to 1,280 pixels, along with ad-supported hosting and API access of 1,000 units per month. The 1,280-pixel limit matters: a large original may be accepted, but the free hotlinked version may not be delivered at its original dimensions.

Postimages’ paid upgrade, Postimages Premium, is aimed at users who need larger uploads, original-resolution hotlinks, ad-free delivery, image replacement without changing URLs, newsletter embedding, or gallery downloads. Free and anonymous users have restrictions around email-newsletter embedding.

Choose Postimages if: you are posting images on a discussion board, legacy forum, blog, or ordinary webpage and predictable hotlinking is more important than private photo management.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not choose it for: a genuinely private image collection. Postimages itself warns that it is not intended for that use. Also keep a local copy if a linked image is important to a published page.

4. imgbox: best for uncomplicated, long-lived hosting

imgbox is the minimalist option. It advertises free hosting for JPG, GIF, and PNG files up to 10 MB each, plus unlimited storage space, unlimited storage time, SSL, hotlinking, galleries, and a simple upload workflow.

The advertised unlimited-storage and unlimited-storage-time policies make imgbox appealing when you want to upload an image, place it in a gallery, and avoid managing a complicated media library. It can be a sensible choice for ordinary image sharing when your files fit the 10 MB ceiling.

The trade-off is flexibility. A 10 MB per-file limit is substantially lower than the limits listed by Imgur, ImgBB, and Postimages, and the supported format list is much narrower. It is therefore less suitable for modern camera formats, large animations, or workflows that require APIs, transformations, or automatic optimization.

Choose imgbox if: you value a simple interface, galleries, hotlinking, and the service’s stated long-lived hosting policy.

Regardless of the policy: keep your own originals. “Unlimited” is a current service promise, not a substitute for an independent backup.

5. Flickr: best for photographers and public portfolios

Flickr is better understood as a photography community and portfolio platform than as anonymous image-bed storage. It provides public profiles, albums, groups, discovery, and presentation features that are useful when you want people to browse your work.

Flickr’s current free-account rules allow up to 1,000 uploaded items. A free account may store no more than 50 non-public photos or videos. Free accounts are limited to Safe content and cannot post commercial content; content exceeding applicable limits may be subject to suspension or deletion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Flickr also changed the practical download experience for free accounts in 2025: downloads of original and large-size images above 1,024 pixels were restricted, while medium and smaller versions remain available. That makes Flickr a poor choice for treating a free account as a full-resolution backup, even though it can be an excellent public portfolio.

Photographers who need more capacity or fewer free-tier restrictions can investigate Flickr Pro. The relevant question is not simply whether Flickr stores your photographs; it is whether its account limits, visibility model, content rules, and download behavior match how you expect to use them.

Choose Flickr if: you want a discoverable photography portfolio, albums, groups, and interaction with other photographers.

Choose something else if: your priority is anonymous hotlinking, private archival storage, commercial free-tier use, or unrestricted delivery of original-size files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Cloudinary: best for developers and production websites

Cloudinary is the specialist choice for a website, app, ecommerce prototype, or other project that needs programmatic media delivery. It is not simply a place to upload a picture and copy a link: it provides upload widgets, APIs, remote fetching, asset search, transformations, optimization, and CDN delivery.

Cloudinary’s free plan is non-expiring and does not require a credit card. It includes 25 monthly credits. The key budgeting detail is that credits are shared across transformations, storage, and bandwidth. As a general measure, one credit represents 1,000 transformations, 1 GB of storage, or 1 GB of image bandwidth.

Dynamic URL transformations can resize and crop images, convert formats, apply effects or overlays, and support responsive delivery and automatic optimization. Cloudinary says free-plan users receive worldwide CDN delivery. These features can reduce the need to create and manually host multiple versions of every image.

Understand the free-tier calculation

Cloudinary is not an unlimited free image locker. A project with modest storage but heavy traffic can consume credits through bandwidth; a site generating many responsive variants can consume them through transformations; a large library can consume them through storage. Estimate all three before committing:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • How many source assets will you store?
  • How many transformed versions or dynamic requests will the site generate?
  • How much image bandwidth will visitors consume each month?

When usage grows beyond the 25-credit allowance, compare Cloudinary paid plans and recalculate the cost against your expected storage, transformation, and delivery requirements.

Choose Cloudinary if: you need an API, CDN, automatic optimization, responsive images, or transformations controlled by code.

Choose a simpler host if: you only need a one-off share link and do not want account setup or usage accounting.

7. Wikimedia Commons: best for freely licensed media

Wikimedia Commons is the right destination when the goal is to find or contribute public-domain and freely licensed educational images, audio, or video. It is a public repository built for broad reuse, not a personal photo-hosting service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Every file has a description page stating its license. Reuse is subject to that license, which may require attribution or impose other conditions. Users should read the individual file’s licensing information rather than assuming that every Commons file is unrestricted.

WD 2TB Elements Portable External Hard Drive for Windows, USB 3.2 Gen 1/USB 3.0 for PC & Mac, Plug and Play Ready - WDBU6Y0020BBK-WESN
  • High capacity in a small enclosure – The small, lightweight design offers up to 6TB* capacity, making WD Elements portable hard drives the ideal companion for consumers on the go.
  • Plug-and-play expandability
  • Vast capacities up to 6TB[1] to store your photos, videos, music, important documents and more
  • SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)

Uploads generally must be public domain or freely licensed, educational or informational in scope, and in an accepted free file format. Fair-use images are not accepted. Ordinary private photographs, copyrighted screenshots, and casual temporary uploads do not belong there simply because the service is free.

Choose Wikimedia Commons if: you need reusable historical media, public-domain images, openly licensed photography, or educational illustrations.

Do not use it as: a generic image dump, private gallery, or backup for copyrighted material that you do not have permission to freely license.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to choose the right free image host

  1. Define the audience. For a private or sensitive image, none of these public-oriented services should be treated as a secure private vault. For broad public discovery, Imgur or Flickr may be appropriate.
  2. Decide whether you need a link or a library. ImgBB and Postimages are optimized for copying links and embeds. Flickr is designed around a portfolio. Cloudinary is designed around an application media pipeline.
  3. Check the delivery size. If the image will be embedded on a webpage, verify whether the host compresses it or resizes hotlinks. Postimages documents a 1,280-pixel free-hotlink limit, while Imgur documents compression thresholds.
  4. Check the file format and size. A 10 MB JPG fits imgbox but a large animated file may require Imgur. HEIC and AVIF users should check format support before uploading.
  5. Check the licensing rules. Wikimedia Commons requires freely licensed or public-domain media within its educational scope. It is not an alternative to obtaining permission for copyrighted work.
  6. Plan for retention. Keep original files locally or in a separate backup. A free host may change limits, remove inactive content, alter downloads, or discontinue a feature.

Are free image-hosting websites safe for private images?

Not automatically. A direct URL, unlisted upload, or hidden-by-link setting does not provide the same protection as authenticated private storage. Imgur states that direct URLs remain accessible and downloadable, and Postimages says it is not suitable for genuinely private collections. Do not upload confidential documents, identity records, unreleased business assets, or personal images unless the service’s current privacy and access controls meet your requirements.

Should you use a free image host as a backup?

No. These services solve distribution and presentation problems, not independent backup. Compression can remove detail, metadata may be stripped, free-account policies can change, and inactive or oversized content may become unavailable. Preserve the original locally and, for valuable images, maintain a separate backup rather than relying on any one host.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which free image-hosting site is best for direct links?

ImgBB is the clearest choice when you need a direct image URL, BBCode, or HTML thumbnail embed code. Postimages is another strong option for forum and website hotlinking, but its free hotlinks are limited to 1,280 pixels.

Is Imgur truly private if an upload is hidden?

No. An anonymous or hidden-by-link Imgur upload is not listed publicly, but anyone with its direct URL can view and download it. Treat it as unlisted sharing, not confidential storage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which service is best for website developers?

Cloudinary is the best fit when you need APIs, CDN delivery, transformations, responsive images, and automatic optimization. Its free plan has 25 monthly credits shared across storage, transformations, and bandwidth, so it is usage-metered rather than unlimited.

Can Wikimedia Commons host any image for free?

No. Commons generally accepts public-domain or freely licensed media that is educational or informational in scope. Fair-use images, ordinary private photos, and copyrighted material without suitable licensing do not qualify.

Which free image host is best for photographers?

Flickr is the strongest portfolio-oriented choice because it provides profiles, albums, groups, and photography discovery. Its free account has a 1,000-item limit, a 50-item limit for non-public photos or videos, Safe-content restrictions, and limitations on larger-image downloads.

The Bottom Line

For most quick-sharing tasks, start with Imgur. Pick ImgBB when copy-ready embed code matters, Postimages when you need forum or website hotlinks, imgbox for a minimal long-lived host, Flickr for a public photography portfolio, Cloudinary for an application or production website, and Wikimedia Commons only for media that meets its free-licensing and educational requirements. Whatever you choose, keep an independent copy of anything you cannot afford to lose.
