These seven Apple TV dramas draw on real people, events, or nonfiction books, but they do not all make the same claim to accuracy. Black Bird and Five Days at Memorial adapt named nonfiction books; other titles are described as inspired by real events, and The Crowded Room is explicitly not a straight adaptation. Treat them as dramatized stories, not documentaries.
How these Apple TV true-story miniseries differ
“Based on a true story” can mean an adaptation of a nonfiction account, a drama inspired by events, or a fictionalized telling centered on historical people. The distinctions below identify the documented connection for each title; they are not a ranking of accuracy. Apple’s show pages associate these titles with Apple TV, but regional catalogue access and subscription terms can change.

Crime stories and real cases
Black Bird: a prison bargain rooted in a memoir
This six-episode psychological crime drama follows Jimmy Keene, who is offered a prison bargain involving suspected serial killer Larry Hall. It is adapted from Keene and Hillel Levin’s memoir In with the Devil and is described as inspired by actual events. That gives it a clear real-case and source-book connection, but it does not establish that every conversation or scene happened exactly as shown. Apple lists its premiere as July 8, 2022. Apple TV’s Black Bird page
The Crowded Room: inspired by a case, not a reconstruction
Apple describes this 10-episode limited series as the story of a young man arrested after a 1979 New York City shooting. TIME links its inspiration to Billy Milligan’s case and Daniel Keyes’s nonfiction book The Minds of Billy Milligan, while cautioning that the series is not a straight adaptation of real events. Watch it as a psychological drama with a real-world point of reference, not as a faithful account of Milligan’s life. TIME’s explanation of The Crowded Room’s inspiration
