If you’re building a new Squarespace site, you don’t need to choose a special video-background template: version 7.1 adds video backgrounds to supported sections. The six options below are legacy version 7.0 template families that support video banners—not a ranked list or Squarespace’s official “best” picks. Squarespace lists seven compatible 7.0 families in total.
Do you need a special Squarespace template for a video background?
No, if your site is on Squarespace 7.1. All 7.1 sites share the same template, and video backgrounds are a section setting available in block sections, portfolio sections, and auto layouts. Squarespace states: “All version 7.1 sites share the same template.” Squarespace’s version guide explains the distinction between 7.0 template families and the current 7.1 design system.
Template choice matters more on 7.0, where features vary by family. Squarespace’s official template comparison lists seven families with video-banner support. The six below are useful examples for existing 7.0 sites; the list is not a quality ranking or an exhaustive set of compatible families.

Adirondack is the seventh compatible 7.0 family. Squarespace lists layout, blog, events, and product pages for it and notes a fade effect on scroll. Check the official comparison table against your actual site and required page types before making a design decision.
How to choose among the 7.0 options
- Start with the pages you need. If your site depends on a store, gallery, or album page, compare the documented page types in the table rather than choosing by banner appearance alone.
- Decide how text should sit over the video. Brine’s intro area allows overlay blocks; Bedford and Pacific offer alternate banner layouts. Confirm that the content remains easy to read over your chosen footage.
- Check banner scope. Five’s video support is for page banners, not its site-wide banner. Tremont offers explicit controls for where the banner appears.
- Keep version in view. These are 7.0 families, not 7.1 template choices. Squarespace still supports 7.0, but says bug fixes and issues are a lower priority while it focuses on 7.1. Its version guide suggests considering 7.1 for access to current features.
How do I add a video background in Squarespace 7.1?
- In the editor, open a page and add or select a supported block section, portfolio section, or auto layout.
- Open that section’s background settings and choose a video source: upload a file, select one from the media library, browse background videos, or add a YouTube or Vimeo link. A Vimeo-linked background video requires a paid Vimeo plan.
- Choose a full-bleed or inset treatment, apply a filter if useful, and adjust playback speed. Add a mobile fallback image in the section settings.
- Preview the section with its foreground text and controls. Keep content legible and avoid using motion where it competes with the page’s main message.
Squarespace’s background-video guide has the current controls and supported section types. Background videos play silently in a loop.
Prepare a 7.1 video that fits Squarespace’s limits
Squarespace’s 2026 guidance sets a 60-second maximum for uploaded background videos and recommends keeping them under 40 seconds. It recommends 1080p resolution, a bitrate of at least 3 Mbps, and 60 frames per second, especially for slow-motion footage. These are product limits and recommendations, not a guarantee of playback quality on every visitor’s device. Each site includes 30 minutes of storage for uploaded videos.

- Use a short clip that still communicates the intended mood if it loads slowly or is not displayed.
- Squarespace recommends no more than two background videos per page to limit page size and help pages load faster.
- Remember that a background video has no sound; don’t make audio necessary to understand the page.
- Use an appropriate fallback image so the page still has a deliberate visual treatment when the video cannot play.
Can Squarespace video backgrounds play on mobile?
They may, but playback is not guaranteed for every visitor. Squarespace says connection speed and browser version can affect whether a video loads; devices in low-battery or power-saving mode will not display background videos. Without a fallback image, a background color generally appears, and low-power devices may show a thumbnail with an unresponsive play button. Squarespace also warns that 7.0 video banners can fail on mobile and recommends a fallback image.

Set a fallback image and check the page on mobile rather than treating the video as essential content. For 7.1, the background-video guide covers fallback behavior; 7.0 owners can consult Squarespace’s Five template guidance for its mobile warning.
