Old PC games are still available online, but “free” does not always mean the same thing. Some sites distribute freeware, shareware, demos, or public-domain releases. Others host older commercial games whose copyright status may be unclear. A few focus on playing games in the browser rather than giving you a ZIP file.
The six sites below cover those different cases. Before downloading a title, check whether it is still sold through an official store such as GOG or Steam, read the site’s notes about the specific release, and scan downloaded files before running them.
Quick comparison
| Site | Catalog focus | Approximate size | Best for | Standalone downloads? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| My Abandonware | PC and console games from 1965–2015 | 37,900+ | Finding a particular older release | Often, but legal status varies |
| DOS Games Archive | Shareware, freeware, demos, and legally released full versions | 1,658 DOS games | Lower-risk DOS downloads | Yes |
| Abandonware DOS | DOS and older Windows games | Varies by catalog | Finding DOS, Windows 3.x, and Windows 95/98 titles | Usually, as ZIP files |
| ClassicReload | DOS, Windows, console, and old interface titles | 6,000+ | Playing preserved games in a browser | Not universally |
| DOSGames.com | Freeware, shareware, public-domain, and other free DOS games | 2,331 | Legally distributed DOS software | Yes |
| Internet Archive | User- and institution-supplied software collections | Varies by collection | Preservation and browser-based research access | Depends on the item |
The catalog figures above are current claims from each site’s homepage: My Abandonware, DOS Games Archive, ClassicReload, and DOSGames.com.
1. My Abandonware
My Abandonware has one of the broadest catalogs in this list. Its homepage advertises more than 37,900 games released between 1965 and 2015. Despite the name, the catalog is not limited to PC software: it also includes console platforms and mobile-era releases.
#1 Best Overall
- A TEAM SPORT, NOT A TOSS GAME. Two teams play at the same time. One side attacks the pole, the other defends and intercepts. First to eleven, win by two.
- OFFENSE AND DEFENSE, LIVE. Passing, interceptions, turnovers, rebounds and penalty shots. Possession changes constantly, so the game moves instead of taking turns.
- BUILT FOR FOUR TO TEN. Flexible team sizes from two-a-side to five-a-side. Best with six or more.
- MOST GROUPS LEARN IT AS THEY PLAY. Rules take about two minutes. Because the format is new, the skill gap is much shorter than in an established sport.
- SETUP IS ABOUT THREE MINUTES, ANY FLAT SURFACE. Grass, turf, sand or gym, with no out-of-bounds. Collapsible pole, penalty zone, sport disc and carry bag. Replacement parts available.
To search, enter a title in the “Game search…” field or select “Search by criteria.” The browse filters include Name, Year, Platform, Genre, Theme, Publisher, and Developer. Those filters are useful when you remember the genre or publisher but not the exact title.
How downloading works
- Open the individual game page from the search results.
- Review the platform, release year, language, version, and file size.
- Open the page’s Download section and choose the relevant file.
- Do not rely on a copied or deep-linked download URL. My Abandonware says its file-delivery system may require the game page to be displayed first.
Some pages contain several versions. The Doom RPG listing, for example, separates multiple J2ME versions from BREW files. Choosing the wrong one can leave you with a package intended for a Java phone or carrier-specific device rather than a Windows PC.
An account is not required to download. However, the legal position needs care: “abandonware” is not a blanket copyright exception. A game can return to commercial sale through GOG or Steam, and the site itself says users should check current availability. Copyright and distribution rules also differ by country.

DOS Games Archive is a more clearly defined option for DOS software. Its homepage lists 1,658 classic DOS games, including shareware, freeware, playable demos, and full versions released as freeware or public domain. The site explicitly says it is not an abandonware site.
Use the “game search” field and its adjacent Search button. You can also browse through the site’s Games section. On a title page, look for the “Download this game” section, then select Download.
Each download page identifies useful file details before you fetch it. The current Rallo Gump entry lists:
- Filename: rallo10.zip
- Type: Shareware
- Platform: MS-DOS
- Size: 2,490 kB, or 2.43 MB
- Package: includes an installer
Check whether a release is a demo or shareware episode. The Rallo Gump shareware version contains only one world, so downloading it does not provide the complete commercial game.

- From Jan. 2028, newly released games on PlayStation will be available for purchase on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital format only. Discs for games released before Jan. 2028 can continue to be played on this device.
- This product is only for PS5 Digital Edition consoles (CFI-2000 model group – slim) or PS5 Pro Consoles
- Drive will play 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs, Blu-ray discs and DVDs
- Internet connection is required to pair Disc Drive and PS5 Digital Edition Console upon setup.
Most titles can also be played in the browser through the site’s separate browser-play option. The site says downloads are checked for adware, malware, and viruses, but that is the site’s assurance—not a reason to skip your own antivirus scan or execute unknown files with administrator privileges.
3. Abandonware DOS
Abandonware DOS covers both DOS and older Windows releases. Its platform categories include MS-DOS, Windows XP/98/95, and Windows 3.x. Its search menu can search by Title, Keyword, Year, Company, or Designer.
Open a game’s title page and select “download game” near the title, or use the title-specific download control in the download section. The site commonly supplies a ZIP archive “as is” and warns that there is no installer.
Expect to use an emulator or virtual machine
A DOS ZIP is not a modern Windows installer. For the current Amazing Spider-Man DOS package, the site gives this launch command after extraction: amazspid/spidey.exe.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDOS games generally need DOSBox or an equivalent emulator. Older Windows releases may require a virtual machine rather than simply double-clicking the executable on Windows 11. The site specifically distinguishes DOSBox for DOS software from a virtual machine for Windows games.
Some pages also expose a “Play [title] online for free” control. That browser option does not prove that a standalone Windows-compatible installer exists. The site also uses labels such as abandonware and protected, but those labels are not a legal guarantee. Check whether the game is currently sold before downloading it.
4. ClassicReload
ClassicReload is primarily a browser-play service rather than a traditional download directory. Its homepage describes its collection as containing more than 6,000 DOS, Windows, console, and abandoned operating-system or interface titles. The site says the games can be played on modern desktop computers, tablets, and phones.

The Oregon Trail page demonstrates why checking the game’s instructions matters. Its current entry is the 1990 DOS release from MECC, and its controls include:
| Action | Key |
|---|---|
| Start or stop walking | Enter |
| Aim the rifle | Arrow keys |
| Fire | Space bar |
| Erase epitaph messages | Control-A |
Many emulated DOS games also offer sound-card and graphics-card selections because the original software expected specific hardware. If audio is missing, try another emulated sound device rather than assuming the game is broken.
ClassicReload should not be described as providing a downloadable ZIP for every title. Its verified pages expose browser-play controls, so it is the most convenient choice when you want to play immediately and do not need a local copy.
5. DOSGames.com
DOSGames.com advertises 2,331 free DOS games. Its stated scope is shareware, freeware, public-domain software, and other free legal DOS releases; it explicitly excludes warez and abandonware.

The site also provides Newest Additions, ALL Games, Most Popular Games, and Random Game! sections.
Its catalog is not necessarily limited to software originally created for DOS. The current latest-games list includes an Intellivision Vol 1 entry alongside games such as Eradicate, Mega-Tetris 2000, Ibid, Monchr, Tommy’s Hyperdrive, LAN-LOK, and Pacmania.

For modern systems, follow the site’s DOSBox Guide. Downloading a ZIP is only the first step: DOSBox may still need the game folder mounted, and the correct executable may not have the same name as the game.
6. Internet Archive
The Internet Archive’s MS-DOS software collection is useful for preservation and browser-based access, but it does not operate like one standardized old-game store. Individual items are supplied by different users or institutions, so available files, emulator launchers, metadata, and rights status vary.
The current collection pages require JavaScript and display a message asking users to enable JavaScript or upgrade to a modern browser. Because of that, there is no dependable static, site-wide download path to describe. Open the individual item and inspect its available files and play options.
The Internet Archive has offered browser-based DOSBox emulation for thousands of DOS and PC games, described in the preservation context as being for scholarship and research purposes. A browser-play button does not automatically establish that every download or redistribution is authorized. The presence of an item in the Archive is not, by itself, proof that all uses are legal.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Running a downloaded DOS game with DOSBox
Many downloads from these sites contain old DOS executables rather than files Windows can run directly. A basic DOSBox workflow is:
- Extract the ZIP into a simple folder, such as C:GamesTITLE.
- Start DOSBox.
- Mount the extracted game folder. My Abandonware’s guide supports dragging the game folder onto the DOSBox desktop icon; that mounts the folder as C:.
- List the files with DIR. For a long list, use DIR /p.
- Identify the launcher, often an .EXE, .COM, or .BAT file.
- Type its filename and press Enter. Press Tab to autocomplete an .exe filename.
For example, if the extracted package contains the Amazing Spider-Man directory and executable listed by Abandonware DOS, use amazspid/spidey.exe.
DOSBox is not the correct universal emulator. J2ME and BREW games require different environments, while some Windows 3.x, 95, and 98 titles work better with DOSBox-X or a virtual machine. ScummVM is often more suitable for supported point-and-click adventures.

Safety and legality checklist
- Check current sales first. An old game may have returned to GOG, Steam, or another official store.
- Read the release type. Shareware, demo, freeware, public domain, and full commercial release are different things.
- Scan the archive. My Abandonware says it generally uses VirusTotal but notes file-size and format limitations. DOS Games Archive and DOSGames.com also make safety or legal-content claims, but no site can make every future file risk-free.
- Do not run unknown programs as administrator. Use a disposable virtual machine for suspicious or incompatible software.
- Keep the emulator separate from your normal files. Old games can expect outdated drivers, write files to unusual locations, or behave badly on current systems.
- Check your local law. Copyright exceptions and distribution rights differ by country. “The publisher abandoned it” is not a universal legal rule.
FAQ
Which site is best for legally free DOS games?
DOS Games Archive and DOSGames.com are the clearest choices when you want sites focused on freeware, shareware, public-domain releases, demos, or other stated legal distributions. Still read the individual game description because a shareware entry may be incomplete.
Do I need an account to download from My Abandonware?
No. My Abandonware states that registration is not required for downloads. Open the game page first, then use its Download link; direct or deep-linked file URLs may fail.
Can Windows 95 games run directly on Windows 11?
Usually not reliably. Older Windows games may require a virtual machine, compatibility adjustments, or a period operating system. DOS games generally need DOSBox, and DOSBox is not automatically suitable for every Windows 3.x/95/98 title.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchPC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Does ClassicReload let me download every game?
No. ClassicReload is primarily a browser-play service. Its pages provide a start control and emulation settings, but there is no verified universal ZIP download for every listed title.
Is every game on the Internet Archive legal to download?
No such blanket assumption is safe. The Internet Archive contains items supplied by different users and institutions. Rights, available files, and permitted uses vary by item; browser emulation is presented in a preservation, scholarship, and research context.
What should I do if a DOS game has no installer?
Extract the ZIP, mount its folder in DOSBox, run DIR or DIR /p to inspect the files, and launch the documented executable. For example, the Amazing Spider-Man package specifies amazspid/spidey.exe.
The Bottom Line
For a clearly labeled freeware or shareware release, start with DOS Games Archive or DOSGames.com. For a hard-to-find older title, My Abandonware and Abandonware DOS offer broader catalogs, but their “abandonware” labels do not remove copyright concerns. Choose ClassicReload or the Internet Archive when browser play and preservation matter more than owning a local download.
