Six kinds of discarded equipment that often show up on Facebook Marketplace can contain a hard drive: desktop PCs, laptops, NAS boxes, DVR/NVR recorders, digital copiers, and servers or workstations. A category is only a clue. Whether a drive is actually inside, how it is connected, whether it can be reused, and whether it is locked to the device all depend on the specific unit. This article does not measure how often such items are listed for free or how often their drives work.

A typical question after a pickup is the one a buyer posted in a public community forum: “Just got this for free from FB Marketplace. Now what should I do with it?” The short answer is to treat any drive you find as holding someone else’s private data until you have erased it, and only then decide whether it is worth keeping.

Six finds worth opening up

1. Desktop towers and old PCs

The Federal Trade Commission’s consumer advice treats the computer’s hard drive as the place to erase before you dispose of a machine, and notes that computers can hold sensitive personal information. Whether a tower has a drive installed, and what kind, varies. Desktop drives are commonly 3.5-inch, but check the label on the drive itself rather than assuming.

2. Laptops

The FTC advises backing up and erasing a computer’s drive before disposal. The EPA states that certified recyclers wipe laptops, which is a reminder that a laptop’s drive is the part most likely to carry personal files. Laptop drives are commonly 2.5-inch, and some laptops store their drive in a way that makes it harder to remove, so check the model’s documentation before you open it.

3. NAS boxes

Seagate’s documentation describes network-attached storage (NAS) enclosures that hold multiple 3.5-inch or 2.5-inch drives, with individual drives swappable in the documented model family. In that family, the 2-bay model supports up to two drives and the 4-bay model supports up to four. That makes an old NAS a strong candidate to inspect, but not a guarantee that every bay is populated or that the drives are compatible with another system. A NAS is also a shared store, so its drives may hold files from several people.

4. DVR/NVR recorders

Seagate describes installing a surveillance drive in a DVR/NVR system and says such drives are designed for continuous video recording. Some DVRs and set-top recorders modify or lock drive settings for their own operating systems, so a drive removed from one may not behave like a standard PC drive. The drive may also contain recorded footage from a home or business, which makes privacy handling a priority.

5. Digital copiers

The FTC notes that some digital copiers store documents on an internal hard drive, including documents that users may not realize remain available on the machine. A copier drive is therefore both a possible salvage lead and a privacy risk. Treat it as a storage device holding scanned or copied documents, not as a blank spare.

6. Servers and workstations

Servers and workstations are a plausible extension of the computer category. Inspect the actual hardware rather than assuming a fixed configuration. The sources reviewed do not quantify how often free servers or workstations contain usable drives, so the general caution that applies to computers applies here too.

Check the device before you assume the drive is usable

  1. Confirm the machine is switched off and unplugged. Do not power on an unknown device to see what it does, especially a DVR or copier that may write to its drive on startup.
  2. Find out whether a drive is present. Open the case or access panel, or check the NAS bays or the recorder’s storage area, and note the drive’s form factor (3.5-inch or 2.5-inch), its interface, its model number, and its visible condition.
  3. Check the model against its documentation. This matters most for NAS, DVR/NVR, and copier hardware, where the manufacturer’s manual states which drives the unit accepts and whether storage is locked.
  4. Sort the device into one of three outcomes. Keep it for reuse only if a drive is present and accessible, the data can be securely erased, and reuse is realistic. Wipe and reuse if the drive can be cleared and is suitable for your purpose. Otherwise, send it for responsible recycling.

Privacy comes before reuse

Do not browse, open, copy, or share the files on a drive you did not buy from its owner with the drive’s contents still in place. Deleting files or reformatting a drive is not the same as securely removing its data. The FTC’s guide Digital Copier Data Security: A Guide for Businesses states the point directly: “Overwriting is different from deleting or reformatting.” Use a method that overwrites the drive’s data, and if you cannot confirm it has been overwritten, do not reuse the drive for anything sensitive.

Overwriting matters for your own machines too. When preparing your own computer for disposal, the FTC recommends backing up personal information first and lists a USB drive as one possible backup option. Do not use an unknown salvaged drive as a backup destination for personal or work data.

The HHS rules on media disposal apply to covered entities and electronic protected health information, which is healthcare-specific. They do not set a legal requirement for a private person who picks up a used drive, but they describe the same principle: decide how media will be cleared, purged, or destroyed before it leaves your control.

Reuse or recycle the device

If a device is unwanted or unsuitable for reuse, the EPA encourages use of certified electronics recyclers. It describes R2 and e-Stewards as accredited standards and notes that certified recyclers are audited. Older electronics can contain hazardous substances, so do not put them in ordinary household trash. The options below are the ones the EPA points to; availability depends on where you live.

Certified electronics recycler (R2 or e-Stewards) Computers, laptops, and other devices you are not keeping The recycler’s actual data-erasure process. The EPA says a certified recycler will wipe a laptop, but confirm the step for your device type.
Local waste-management office or household hazardous-waste facility Electronics that local rules accept for drop-off Whether the site accepts that device type and whether it provides any data wiping. Local rules vary.
