There is no universal “top six” crypto-exchange ranking: access, trading features and costs depend on where you live and which product you use. This guide uses a U.S.-reader lens and treats Coinbase, Kraken, Gemini, Crypto.com, Binance.US and Bitstamp as options to investigate—not as a verified ranking or a claim that every service is available in every state. Confirm local eligibility and the exact BTC and ETH markets before opening an account. Buying through a simple purchase flow and trading on an order book are different activities, and their costs may differ.
How to compare exchanges for BTC and ETH
Choose based on the specific market and transaction you intend to use, rather than an exchange’s advertised coin count or lowest headline fee. Availability and terms can differ by country, state and product. Kraken, for example, notes country exclusions for some product features; check the relevant service’s current location rules before signing up (Kraken product availability information).
- Confirm the market: Check that the service offers the BTC or ETH spot pair you intend to trade in your jurisdiction. The names in this guide are candidates, not confirmation of current pair availability.
- Compare like with like: A simple purchase quote is not the same as an order-book trade. Compare the live quoted price and any disclosed charges for a simple buy with the applicable maker or taker fee for your order-book trade.
- Use your actual tier and order size: Trading fees can depend on maker/taker status and a changing volume tier. Deposit and withdrawal charges may also affect the total.
- Check the final details: Review the order preview, local terms and withdrawal information immediately before submitting. Rates and features can change.

The six services below are a practical shortlist, not a ranked verdict. The available information does not establish a consistent, current comparison of their BTC/ETH pairs, fees, trading controls, or custody and withdrawal terms, so those details should be checked directly for your location and account.

Coinbase
Coinbase distinguishes simple buy/sell flows from Coinbase Advanced order-book trading. Its help page says simple-order quotes include a spread that may vary, while Advanced trades interact directly with the order book and have no included spread (Coinbase explanation of spread and fees). That does not make an Advanced trade cost-free: the applicable trading fee and other charges still matter.

Coinbase Exchange’s published maker/taker ranges are 0.00%–0.40% maker and 0.04%–0.60% taker, based on the user’s current 30-day volume tier—not a single BTC or ETH rate for everyone (Coinbase Exchange fee schedule). Coinbase separately announced entry spot-tier rates for Coinbase Advanced on September 16, 2026: 0.50% maker / 0.90% taker in the U.S.; 0.25% / 0.50% in the EU and UK; and 0.09% / 0.10% in Brazil, India and other international markets. These rates apply to eligible markets and that product, not automatically to every account or Coinbase service (Coinbase announcement on Advanced fee rates). The announcement says rates may change and are shown in the order preview.

Kraken
Consider Kraken if its available product and trading interface fit your needs, but verify feature eligibility for your country or state. Country exclusions apply to some features, and the available information here does not establish current Kraken BTC/ETH pairs, fees or withdrawal terms for your location (Kraken product availability information).

Check whether Gemini offers the specific BTC or ETH market and trading product you want where you live. The available information does not establish a comparable current fee, pair-availability or withdrawal profile for Gemini, so use its live product terms and trade preview rather than assuming its costs match another exchange’s.

Crypto.com is another candidate to check for local eligibility and the exact BTC/ETH product you plan to use. Confirm whether you are using a simple purchase flow or an order-book market, then compare the full quoted cost and any applicable fees in that product.

Check Binance.US’s current state availability and the exact spot markets before treating it as an option. A service name or broad listing does not establish access to a particular BTC/ETH pair or feature in your location.

Bitstamp is also worth checking against your intended market and location. Confirm current BTC/ETH pair access, fee tier, order types and withdrawal terms directly; the available information does not verify those details in a consistent comparison with the other candidates.

How to estimate what a trade will cost
For an order-book trade, identify whether your order will be charged as maker or taker, find the fee tier shown for your account, and apply it to the order value. A maker order adds liquidity to the book; a taker order matches available liquidity. The actual classification and fee depend on the exchange’s rules and how the order executes.

Coinbase’s help material illustrates why a simple purchase quote and an Advanced order-book trade cannot be compared by looking at one fee percentage alone: simple quotes include a variable spread, while Advanced trades do not include that spread but may incur trading fees (Coinbase explanation of spread and fees). Include any deposit or withdrawal charges that apply to your chosen payment method and destination.
