Archaeologists have reported 546 graves at Beaurains-lès-Noyon, in France’s Oise department, along the route of the future Seine-Nord Europe Canal. The count was reported in October 2026 after archaeological excavation that began in January; it is not a final total, because only part of the burial ground has been exposed. The graves are broadly dated to the 11th through 14th centuries, but the cemetery’s purpose remains uncertain.

Where were the graves found?

The cemetery is at Beaurains-lès-Noyon, a rural area in the Oise department of northern France, on the planned route of the Seine-Nord Europe Canal. The reported discovery is an organized burial ground, not a mass grave: accounts describe graves arranged around a small building whose stones had been removed, with burials laid out in five layers. The building’s original purpose has not been established. Popular Mechanics’ October 2026 report attributes these site details to France Info and archaeologist Élodie Wermuth of Éveha.

How were the graves discovered?

The published account describes a two-stage archaeological process, rather than construction workers personally uncovering the cemetery. A 2024 diagnostic assessment by France’s Regional Directorate of Cultural Affairs found skeletons in trenches along the planned route. Archaeologists then carried out a larger excavation in 2026, from January into September, and reported the count of 546 graves. Wermuth said the exposed area was only part of the burial ground: “546 graves, bearing in mind that we have only a portion of them, is a lot for a rural setting.”

This sequence is part of preventive archaeology: specialists assess sites before major construction, then excavate where significant remains are identified. The Canal Company says diagnostics along the project took place in two phases—the first from 2008 to 2013 and a second beginning in 2020—and that the Regional Archaeology Service can order excavation when finds warrant it. The Canal Company’s explanation of preventive archaeology describes this as a way to assess archaeological remains along the route before work starts.

What do archaeologists know about the cemetery?

Current reporting places the cemetery’s use broadly between the 11th and 14th centuries. That range is not a precise chronology for each grave. The excavated graves were described as surrounding the remains of a small, stone-stripped building, but the available reporting does not identify the building’s function or explain why people were buried at this location.

The meaning of the site is still being investigated. The two leading interpretations reported are a leprosarium cemetery and a parish cemetery, but neither is confirmed.

Hypothesis Evidence reported What it does not establish
Leprosarium Some of the earlier burials reportedly show pathological lesions. No hospital structure has been identified at the excavated location. Lesions alone do not prove that the cemetery served people with leprosy.
Parish cemetery Reports describe men, women and children among the buried. A mix of ages and sexes does not by itself identify the cemetery as a parish burial ground.

The fact that excavation has exposed only part of the burial ground also limits what can be inferred from the burials seen so far. Accounts mention severe conditions in some deeper graves, another reason not to treat either interpretation as settled.

What could clarify the cemetery’s purpose?

The October 2026 coverage described carbon dating, examination of the bones and comparison with historical sources as planned work. It reported no results from those investigations. Dating may help refine when the cemetery was used, while skeletal study and documentary research may add context about the people buried there. Until those findings are reported, the reason for the cemetery’s location—and whether it was associated with a leprosarium or a parish—remains open.

What the wider canal archaeology has found

The 546 graves are one site-specific discovery; they should not be confused with findings elsewhere along the canal route. In March 2026, France’s Ministry of Culture said preventive archaeological diagnostics along the 107-kilometre corridor from 2020 to 2025 had revealed evidence of more than 300,000 years of human occupation. Those figures describe the broader canal corridor, not the Beaurains-lès-Noyon cemetery. The Ministry of Culture’s March 2026 notice provides the corridor-wide context.

Why the 546 figure may change

The number is a count reported for the excavated portion as of the October 2026 coverage, not a final census of the burial ground. Because archaeologists said they had exposed only part of it, further excavation could reveal additional graves. The detailed discovery account located in that coverage was attributed to France Info, but its linked page was unavailable; the Canal Company and Ministry sources establish the wider archaeological context rather than independently confirming this site’s grave count or the competing explanations.
