Reddit has a community for almost every interest, but a list published in 2021 should be treated as a starting point—not a permanent ranking. Here are 50 memorable communities organized by interest, followed by the current way to search, evaluate, and join them.
There is no permanent, objective list of the “best” subreddits. Reddit communities change, go private, revise their rules, or become more or less active. The 50 communities below are best treated as a curated starting point, based on a category-organized list originally published on July 14, 2021—not as a current ranking by size, quality, or activity.
Reddit is made up of thousands of topic-focused communities, commonly called subreddits. Each community is created and moderated by its users, so the experience can differ substantially from one subreddit to another. Use the list to find possibilities, then check each community’s current description, recent posts, rules, activity level, content warnings, and posting requirements before participating.
If you are new to Reddit, an optional Reddit guide book or beginner’s guide can also help explain Reddit’s terminology, voting system, community structure, and etiquette. You do not need one to use Reddit, but it may be useful if the platform’s layout and culture are unfamiliar.
How to choose the right subreddit
Reddit’s current search tools let you search for communities, posts, comments, media, and people. Search by the community name below or use broader phrases such as “budgeting,” “cat photography,” “home improvement,” or “historical questions.” Then follow this quick check:
#1 Best Overall
- 1 subject notebook comes with 70 college ruled, double-sided sheets. College ruling is ideal for older students who prefer more lines per page.
- Sheets measure 7-1/2" x 10-1/2" when torn out with an overall size of 8" x 10-1/2". Perforation easily tears out with clean edges.
- Notebook is 3-hole punched to store in your favorite binder. Covers are coated for durability and have writable label on front cover.
- Includes 6 notebooks in randomly selected colors: Red, Blue, Green, Yellow, Purple or Black. Colors will vary with each purchase.
- Assembled in U.S.A. with U.S. and foreign parts
- Open the community page. Confirm that the name and topic match what you want. Similar names can refer to very different communities.
- Read the description and recent posts. This shows whether the community is active and what members actually discuss now.
- Read the rules before posting. Rules may restrict links, images, advice requests, spoilers, account age, karma, or self-promotion.
- Check content and audience labels. Some communities may contain mature, graphic, political, or otherwise sensitive material.
- Lurk before contributing. Observe the preferred format, tone, flair, spoiler conventions, and standards for evidence.
- Participate authentically. Do not join a community only to paste promotional links. Reddit’s platform rules prohibit spam and disruptive behavior, while individual communities can impose additional restrictions.
Joining a community does not mean every post will appear in your home feed. Reddit says the home feed displays only a subset of the communities a user has joined. Recommendations and high-traffic feeds can also be affected by a community’s settings, so visibility is not a reliable measure of quality.
The 50 best subreddits by interest
The categories and community descriptions below preserve the useful orientation of the original 2021 list. They are editorial groupings, not endorsements or rankings. Community names, rules, availability, and moderation standards may have changed since the original publication.

1. Relationship advice
These communities cover dating, interpersonal conflict, and personal-advice questions. Posts often involve only one person’s account of a complicated situation, so treat responses as perspectives from other users rather than professional counseling.
- r/relationship_advice — General advice about personal relationships and interpersonal problems.
- r/AmItheAsshole — Users describe a conflict and ask the community to judge whether they acted wrongly.
- r/Relationships — General relationship discussions, questions, and advice.
- r/NeedAdvice — General advice outside personal relationships, dating, and sex, according to the original list’s description.
- r/Dating — Questions and discussions about dating experiences.
For serious safety concerns, abuse, mental-health crises, or legal issues, seek qualified local help rather than relying on anonymous comments.
2. Finance
Finance communities can be useful for terminology, experiences, budgeting ideas, and questions to research further. They are not substitutes for individualized financial, tax, or investment advice. Rules and acceptable topics differ, especially between general personal-finance and trading communities.

How to find newer or better-fitting communities
The 50 names above are only a starting point. Reddit’s search system can find communities directly, so you are not limited to old listicles or the communities that happen to appear in your home feed.

- Compare several communities. Look at recent posting frequency, unanswered questions, moderation notices, and the quality of discussions.
- Inspect related communities. A community’s sidebar, description, or pinned posts may point to more specialized groups.
- Use a focused account strategy. Joining many communities is allowed, but a smaller set of relevant communities makes the home feed easier to manage.
- Recheck before posting. A community that accepted a type of post in 2021 may now prohibit it or require a specific format.
Important limitations of this list
- It is historical. The underlying list was published July 14, 2021.
- It is curated, not ranked. “Best” reflects usefulness and recognizability for a broad-interest guide, not an objective score.
- Subscriber counts are omitted deliberately. The original counts should not be treated as current without checking every community separately.
- Availability can change. A subreddit may be private, restricted, quarantined, renamed, inactive, or unavailable in your location or account experience.
- Rules can change. Community-specific rules apply alongside Reddit’s platform-wide rules.
- Advice quality varies. Finance, politics, relationships, skincare, and other advice-heavy discussions should be treated as peer discussion, not professional guidance.
A practical first visit
Choose one or two communities from the list, open their pages, and spend a few minutes reading before posting. Sort recent posts by more than one view if available, note recurring formats and flairs, and look for pinned moderator guidance. If you decide to contribute, answer the question being asked, disclose relevant context, avoid personal attacks, and do not copy the same promotional message into multiple communities.
That approach is more reliable than choosing a subreddit solely because it appears popular. Reddit’s recommendation and high-traffic-feed settings can influence what people discover, while a smaller community may provide better answers for a specialized interest.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are these still the best subreddits on Reddit?
No. The list originated in an article published on July 14, 2021, and is a curated selection rather than a current ranking. Communities may have changed names, rules, activity levels, visibility, or availability.
How do I find the right subreddit?
Search for the community by name or by a broader interest, then read its description, recent posts, rules, content labels, and posting requirements before joining or posting.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCan I join multiple subreddits?
Yes, but joining does not guarantee that every community’s posts will appear in your home feed. Reddit says the home feed shows only a subset of joined communities, and recommendation or high-traffic-feed settings can affect discovery.
Can I rely on subreddit advice?
Treat comments as general peer opinions. This is especially important for investing, debt, politics, relationships, skincare, health-related questions, and home repairs involving safety risks.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: These 50 subreddits are a useful, category-based map of Reddit, but the original list dates from July 2021 and should not be read as a current ranking. Search each community, inspect its recent activity and rules, and participate authentically before deciding whether it is right for you.
