In Circana survey figures reported in September 2026, 50% of recent Nintendo Switch Online cancellers cited a budget-and-value reason involving cost, up from 40% in Q1 2026. The reported cost-citing shares also rose for Xbox Game Pass Essential and PlayStation Plus Essential, reaching 40% for each, up from 37%. These are shares of people who had already canceled—not cancellation rates or evidence that more subscribers canceled.
What the reported figures show
AllThings. How attributed the figures to Circana’s Future of Insights for Video Games Consumer Survey. The comparison is between the share of recent cancellers who gave a cost-related reason in Q1 2026 and a later 2026 survey period:
| Service | Q1 2026 | Later 2026 survey | Change in share |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch Online | 40% | 50% | +10 percentage points |
| Xbox Game Pass Essential | 37% | 40% | +3 percentage points |
| PlayStation Plus Essential | 37% | 40% | +3 percentage points |
The figures and comparison were reported by AllThings. How on September 19, 2026. The percentage-point changes describe shifts in the share of cancellers naming cost; they are not subscription price increases or percentage changes in the number of cancellations.
What “citing cost” means for Switch Online
The reported Switch Online response was: “Couldn’t justify the cost of the subscription within my budget but liked the service.” It captures a distinction that a simple “too expensive” label misses: a person may be satisfied with a subscription and still decide its recurring charge no longer fits their budget.
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
The finding does not establish that Nintendo raised its price. The report concerns reasons people gave for canceling, and a separate September report says the U.S. Nintendo price had not changed. The data support a claim about reported budget pressure, not a causal link to a particular price change.
What the survey does not establish
The denominator matters: these percentages are among people who had already canceled and reported a reason. They do not tell readers what share of all subscribers canceled, whether total cancellations increased, or whether cost caused a change in overall churn. A September 13, 2026 report by theGeek.games also attributed the figures to Circana and identified Circana executive director and video game industry analyst Mat Piscatella as the person who shared them; it likewise cautioned that the figures do not establish a rise in total cancellations.

How to read the comparison
- Switch Online had the largest reported shift: its cost-related share among cancellers rose 10 percentage points, compared with three points for each of the other two services.
- That does not prove a price hike or an increase in cancellations: it reflects the reasons given by surveyed people who had already canceled.
- Budget fit can differ from satisfaction: the reported Switch Online wording explicitly pairs liking the service with being unable to justify its cost within a budget.
