To monitor electricity use, start with your utility’s app or portal; for fresher or more detailed readings, use an app connected to a compatible smart meter or a separate home energy monitor. The options below include three named apps and two app categories, because availability depends on your utility, location, and hardware—not every option works for every household.

Five app options for tracking electricity use

1. Emporia Energy

Emporia’s free mobile and web app shows energy use and costs, connected-device status, and historical data. Emporia says it has no subscription or in-app purchases; monitoring hardware is separate. The app can work with different hardware routes: a Vue Utility Connect reads data from compatible smart meters in selected service areas, while the Vue panel monitor measures whole-home use and can provide selected circuit-level detail. Emporia says one Vue supports up to 16 branch circuits. The smart-meter option depends on utility and meter compatibility; the panel option requires installation at the electrical panel. Emporia reports “400,000+ Homes and counting” on its app page, a company-reported figure, not an independently audited statistic or evidence of typical savings. Emporia app details, Utility Connect support, and Vue support explain the options.

2. Sense

The Sense app connects either to a Sense Home Energy Monitor installed in a home’s electrical panel or directly to a Sense-enabled smart meter, when a participating utility has enabled access and invited the customer. Sense says its software learns device patterns over time; that is not a guarantee it will immediately identify every appliance. A panel monitor involves hardware and installation, while the utility route depends on local participation. See Sense’s description of the app and its eligibility and setup information.

3. Your electric utility’s app or portal

Check the app or website for the company that bills you for electricity. Look for interval-usage charts, daily or hourly views, and comparisons with prior billing periods. The data may arrive with a delay, and available detail varies by utility and meter. This is often the simplest place to begin because it may not require a separate monitor, but do not assume that every provider offers live readings.

Watt Meter Power Meter Plug Home Electricity Usage Monitor 7 Modes Display
  • Various Monitoring Parameters: The power meter plug can monitor the power (W), energy (kWh), volts, amps, hertz, power factor, cost, minimum and maximum power (W), cumulative days and time of your appliances. By switching 7 display modes, you can easily know the various parameters while the appliance is working. The home energy monitor can also calculate and display how much power your appliance uses and how much electricity bill it cost in cumulative time
  • Upgraded LCD Display: With large screen size 2.36 inch x 1.85 inch, clearer monitor backlit, our electrical usage monitor can display the data clearer and more visible no matter day or night. 180°full wide viewing angles is great for reading and recording the data in any angles. No need to stand on the front of the display and bend over to read the numbers
  • Adjustable Backlight Time: Our upgraded watt meter has 5 options of backlight time. The default backlight time duration is 10 minutes(bL-0). If you want to change the backlight time, you can press and hold "UP" and "DOWN" button at the same time to enter backlight time setting, then press "UP" and "DOWN" to select the backlight time (bL-0 =10 minutes, bL-1=1 hour, bL-2=4 hours, bL-3=8 hours, bL-4=always on), finally press the "COST" to save the backlight time settings
  • Overload protection: When the power of the appliance exceeds the overload power, the LCD will display “OVERLOAD” to warn the user. All the buttons will quit working and can only be workable when you lower or remove the load power. The default overload power is 3680W and is adjustable from 0 to 3680W. In general, you need to set the overload power to 1800W before using. Just press the "function" button for more than 3 seconds to enter the setting
  • Data Memory Function: The wattage meter will record your power consumption data when you remove it from socket, or remove appliances from the electricity monitor. You can directly see the last data when you use it next time. This function can also automatically save the data when there is a sudden power failure

4. DTE Insight (DTE Energy customers)

DTE Insight is a regional option for DTE Energy customers, not a nationwide utility app. DTE lists usage reports, bill and energy tools, budgets, goals, tips, and PowerScan. Its Energy Bridge can provide real-time data when paired with a qualifying AMI meter; without the bridge, usage data may be delayed. Bridge availability and terms can change, so check DTE’s current details before deciding whether it fits. See DTE’s usage tools, DTE Insight FAQ, and DTE’s app and bridge features.

5. An app for an energy-monitoring smart plug

If you want to track one plug-in appliance—such as a computer or dehumidifier—an energy-monitoring smart plug and its companion app can show that device’s consumption. It measures the load connected to the plug, not your whole home, and it is not a substitute for a utility account view or whole-home monitor. Check that the plug works with your outlet, network, and preferred app before buying.

And the “total cost” mode will show how much electricity bill it cost in cumulative time
  • Overload protection: When the loading power of the appliance is over the default overload threshold 1800W, the whole display with backlight and the word “OVERLOAD” will keep flashing to warn the users. Please turn off the appliance for safety concern
  • Premium Material: The whole body of our energy meter is made of high-quality ABS material. It makes our home electricity usage monitor more long lasting, fireproof and anti-drop. The standard US socket and plug is suitable for all US standard appliances
  • Backlight Display: With white backlight and black words, the LCD display of our home power monitor can display the data clearer and help you to read the data easier no matter day or night. The backlight will only lights up when the device is connected to AC power. If no button is pressed, the backlight turns off automatically after 10 minutes. You can also press the "UP" button to turn off the backlight manually, and press any button to turn on backlight again
  • Easy to reset: No reset tool needed, our appliance power usage meter is easy to reset. You can press the “M” button for 5 seconds directly to reset the device. After reset, all cumulative data (electricity quantity, cost) will be cleared, and all settings will be restored to factory settings

Which approach gives the detail you need?

Approach What it can show What to check
Utility app or portal Usage by interval or billing period, where the provider offers it Whether your provider supports usage graphs and how quickly readings update
Compatible smart-meter connection Meter-supplied household readings; freshness varies by product and service Utility, meter, and service-area eligibility. Emporia says Utility Connect offers near-real-time readings; Sense requires an enabled utility and customer invitation.
Panel-installed monitor Whole-home draw and, on some systems, selected circuit-level breakdowns Panel compatibility, installation needs, hardware cost, and whether you need qualified help
Energy-monitoring smart plug Consumption of the appliance plugged into it Plug and network compatibility; it does not measure the rest of the home

How to choose and get started

  1. Check your utility first. Sign in to its app or portal and look for usage, energy, or interval-data screens. Confirm whether the readings are live, delayed, or grouped by billing period.
  2. Match the app to your meter and location. For a meter-connected product, confirm your utility and meter are supported. Emporia Utility Connect is limited to compatible smart meters and selected service areas; Sense’s utility route requires participation and an invitation. DTE Insight is intended for DTE customers.
  3. Decide how much detail you need. A bill-period chart may be enough to spot broad changes. For total household demand, consider a whole-home monitor. For selected circuits, check whether the monitor supports that capability and how many circuits it can cover.
  4. Account for hardware and installation. Smart-meter readers require compatibility; panel monitors attach at the electrical panel and may need qualified installation. A smart plug is simpler for one device but cannot provide a whole-home picture.
  5. Check ongoing terms separately from app access. Confirm any hardware price, subscription, bridge requirement, or smart-device control cost with the provider. Emporia describes its app as free with no subscription or in-app purchases, but compatible hardware is separate; DTE’s bridge and premium terms may change.

What these apps can—and cannot—tell you about savings

Usage history and fresher readings can help you see when electricity use rises and investigate which loads may be contributing. Device-pattern identification is a vendor-described feature, not a promise of instant or complete appliance recognition. The available sources do not establish a comparable independent figure for typical bill savings from these apps, so treat monitoring as a way to understand use rather than a guaranteed way to lower a bill.
