AI is changing security models by helping teams prioritize alerts and vulnerabilities faster, extending identity controls to software agents, and forcing clearer decisions about who owns AI risk. It also increases the need for human oversight: AI can support security work, but it does not replace secure configuration, patching, identity and access management, monitoring, segmentation, or incident response.

1. Security operations move from manual queues to AI-assisted prioritization

Faster analysis, with a human accountable for the decision

Traditional security operations often depend on analysts to review alerts, logs, and threat reports in sequence. AI can help sift through high volumes of information, identify patterns, and prioritize what may need attention first. Used well, that can shorten detection, triage, and response work; it does not make an alert true or a suggested response safe by itself.

The World Economic Forum’s Global Cybersecurity Outlook 2026 reports that 77% of surveyed organizations had adopted AI for cybersecurity. Among reported uses, 52% used it for phishing detection, 46% for intrusion and anomaly response, and 40% for user-behaviour analytics. These are reported adoption figures, not evidence that AI alone improved security outcomes.

For CISOs, the priority remains operational effectiveness rather than adopting AI for its own sake. An Oxford Economics survey of 650 CISOs, conducted in July and August 2025 across Australia, France, Germany, India, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, the UK, and the US, found that 92% prioritized improving threat detection and response, 78% prioritized strengthening identity and access management, and 68% prioritized investing in AI cybersecurity. Cisco/Splunk published the findings in 2026; they describe survey priorities, not measured results of those investments (Cisco/Splunk report).

What this changes in practice

  • Use AI to rank and summarize findings against asset importance, exposure, and business context; keep a named analyst or incident commander responsible for consequential decisions.
  • Define which actions can run automatically and which require approval, such as disabling an account, isolating a system, or blocking a business-critical connection.
  • Record the evidence behind a recommendation and the action taken, so responders can review mistakes and audit decisions.
  • Keep the established response plan, monitoring, and escalation route in force if an AI service is unavailable or produces an unreliable result.

A detection or vulnerability finding has little value unless someone validates it, prioritizes it, and completes remediation. AI can help move work through the queue; it cannot guarantee that the underlying issue gets fixed.

2. Identity and access management must cover people and AI agents

Agents need identities, boundaries, and lifecycle controls

When an AI agent can call tools, retrieve data, or act through connected systems, it becomes part of the identity and access problem. The question is no longer only who can access what, but also what can access it, when, and on whose behalf. Deloitte describes this change in its analysis of the CISO role (Deloitte Insights).

Apply familiar IAM principles to agents rather than treating them as informal extensions of a user account. Maintain an inventory of agents and their owners; give each an identifiable account or credential; grant only the permissions required for its task; and define how access is approved, reviewed, revoked, and retired. Delegated authority should be visible: an agent acting for an employee should not silently inherit broader privileges than that employee or task requires.

Monitor behavior, not just sign-ins

Agent oversight needs logs that show what an agent accessed, which tools it invoked, what permissions it used, and what actions it took. Establish alerts and escalation rules for suspicious changes, including:

  • Unexpected tool use or interaction with a connected system outside the agent’s assigned task.
  • Privilege escalation or attempts to access data outside the approved scope.
  • Unusual data access, goal deviation, or a material change in behavior.

Decide in advance which actions need human approval and what conditions should pause an agent or escalate its activity. Deloitte’s 2026 Global Technology Leadership Study reports that 80% of automation leaders planned to accelerate investment in AI agents, while 21% of organizations described their agentic AI governance as mature. The figures signal an investment-governance gap in that study, not a universal measure of every organization’s readiness.

3. Vulnerability management shifts toward continuous, risk-based remediation

Prioritize exposure and exploitability, not just the scan queue

Periodic reviews can leave a gap between discovering a weakness and deciding what to fix first. AI-enabled vulnerability and exploit discovery can increase the volume and speed of findings, putting pressure on processes designed around scheduled scans and human-only queues. The Cloud Security Alliance’s July 28, 2026 paper describes this challenge and a move toward continuous, AI-assisted detection, validation, and remediation while retaining human accountability. Its conclusions synthesize three practitioner summits under the Chatham House Rule; they are qualitative findings, not a representative statistical survey (Cloud Security Alliance).

Continuous does not mean treating every finding as equally urgent or automatically patching every system. A useful workflow combines technical evidence with context: whether an asset is exposed, what it supports, how severe the weakness is, whether exploitation is credible, and what remediation could disrupt. The goal is to direct attention to the risks that matter most and move verified fixes to completion promptly.

Build a controlled remediation loop

  1. Discover: Collect findings from the organization’s authorized vulnerability and asset-management processes.
  2. Validate: Confirm that the affected asset and weakness are real, and distinguish actionable findings from noise.
  3. Prioritize: Rank work using exposure, exploit evidence, asset criticality, and business impact rather than severity alone.
  4. Remediate or mitigate: Assign an owner and deadline; use an approved patch, configuration change, or compensating control.
  5. Verify and record: Check that the fix worked, document any accepted exception and its owner, and feed the outcome into the next prioritization cycle.

AI can assist at each stage, but accountable staff still need to approve changes that carry material operational risk and verify that remediation actually reduced exposure.

4. AI governance becomes cross-functional, with named decision rights

Shared input is not the same as shared accountability

AI risks can span cybersecurity, technology operations, data, compliance, vendors, finance, and business teams. Security cannot govern those risks alone, but distributing the work across departments without naming an accountable decision-maker can leave important choices unresolved. Deloitte’s guidance emphasizes clear decision rights, named owners, measurable controls, and continuous oversight.

Cisco/Splunk reported that nearly all CISOs in its 2026 announcement’s survey had responsibility for AI governance and risk management. That finding points to the CISO’s growing role, but it does not mean the CISO should own every AI system’s business purpose, data quality, or operational outcome.

Make governance operational

  • Name the business owner for each AI use and identify who approves its security and data risks.
  • Set controls that can be checked, such as access boundaries, logging, human approval points, and review intervals.
  • Define who can accept residual risk, who must be notified of an incident, and how disagreements are escalated.
  • Include vendors and connected services in inventory, access, monitoring, and incident processes.
  • Review controls continuously as models, tools, permissions, and business uses change.

Governance is useful when it produces decisions that can be traced to an owner and evidence—not merely a policy that says AI risks are everyone’s responsibility.

5. Automation shifts repetitive work, while human judgment and skills matter more

Augment the team rather than assume the work is solved

AI can take on repetitive, high-volume tasks such as sorting information or preparing summaries, leaving people more time for contextual decisions, policy, governance, and strategy. That shift changes the work security teams do; it does not remove the need for analysts who can question outputs, understand business impact, and take responsibility for actions.

The World Economic Forum reports insufficient knowledge or skills (54%), the need for human oversight (41%), and uncertainty about risk (39%) among barriers to AI adoption in cybersecurity. Separately, SANS’s 2026 survey page reports 78% active AI use in cybersecurity, but only 27% described their deployments as mature production; 63% of practitioners saw significant AI shortcomings in threat detection and response (SANS Institute). These figures come from different surveys and definitions, so they should not be read as a direct comparison between populations.

Set up oversight that can catch failure

  • Train analysts to check AI-generated findings against logs, telemetry, and known system context.
  • Test tools against representative security scenarios and track false positives, missed detections, and unsafe recommendations.
  • Use human review for decisions with significant business, privacy, or availability consequences.
  • Give staff a clear way to report model errors and pause or roll back automation.
  • Keep core security controls effective independently of AI, including secure configuration, patching, IAM, monitoring, segmentation, and incident response.

AI also affects the threat landscape: malicious actors can use it to increase the speed or scale of attacks. The Australian Cyber Security Centre and co-sealing agencies’ guidance on AI in cyber defence advises organizations to use AI securely and strengthen defenses rather than expect deployment to compensate for weak fundamentals (Australian Cyber Security Centre).
