Rocket League already lets you choose a matchmaking region in its menus, so a VPN is not needed just to pick a listed region. A VPN changes the IP address your traffic appears to come from and can change the network path it takes. At the time of writing, no published Rocket League-specific test shows that any named VPN reliably lowers ping or guarantees access to a different region. This guide covers the in-game options first, then five VPN services worth comparing, and how to test one fairly before you pay for it.

Choose a region in Rocket League first

For Casual and Competitive matchmaking, Epic Games’ Rocket League support article describes this path:

  1. From the main menu, select Play.
  2. Choose Casual or Competitive.
  3. Open Regions in the upper-right corner.
  4. Select a listed region, or select Recommended.

Epic states that Recommended selects the closest region and generally gives the best connectivity. The support article says, “When playing Rocket League, it’s best to choose the region closest to you,” and warns that “Choosing regions that are farther away may lead to lag and packet loss.”

The listed regions at the time of writing are:

  • US-East
  • US-Central
  • US-West
  • Europe
  • Asia-SE Mainland
  • Asia-SE Maritime
  • Asia-East
  • Middle East
  • Oceania
  • South Africa
  • South America
  • India

Tournament and Private Match regions follow separate instructions in the same article. Tournament region can be changed once per 24 hours, and it cannot be changed within 24 hours of the selected tournament ending.

Troubleshoot the connection before blaming the route

If matches feel laggy, Epic’s official steps come before any VPN test:

  • Confirm the selected region is the one you intend to play in.
  • Restart your router.
  • Use a wired Ethernet connection instead of Wi-Fi. Epic’s PC connection guidance recommends this.
  • Close other devices and applications that compete for bandwidth.
  • Check the connection indicators in-game (see below).
  • On PC, check Epic’s service status and work through the other network steps in Epic’s PC troubleshooting guide.

Read the connection indicators

Epic’s connection quality indicators distinguish five conditions. Each points to a different fault:

  • Disconnection: the link to the game dropped.
  • Server health issue: the problem is on the game’s side, so rerouting your traffic will not help.
  • Packet loss: data is not arriving intact, which usually indicates an unstable path or a congested link.
  • Latency variation: ping jumps around from moment to moment, even if the average looks acceptable.
  • High latency: ping is consistently high, which is more often a matter of distance or a slow link.

Matching the indicator to the symptom tells you whether a VPN is even addressing the problem. A server health issue cannot be fixed by changing your route, and a steady high ping is the kind of symptom a closer region or a different endpoint might change.

Why a VPN cannot pick the exact data center

Rocket League v2.49 patch notes state: “Players will now ping individual data centers in their selected region instead of a singular server.” This increases the chance of a better average latency, but the game chooses among data centers within the region you selected. A VPN does not control that choice.

What a VPN can and cannot change

  • Apparent IP location: the game sees the VPN endpoint’s address rather than yours.
  • Route: traffic first travels to the VPN server, then onward to the game. A distant endpoint adds a leg, which can raise latency. A nearby endpoint may route around an unstable or congested ISP path, which is the vendor claim, but no Rocket League-specific result confirms it.
  • Region availability: a VPN does not make a region listed, selected, or playable at acceptable latency. Region selection still happens in Rocket League’s menus.
  • Data center choice: the game still picks among data centers in the selected region.

Five VPN services to compare

This is a shortlist based on features each vendor documents for gaming and setup. It is not a ranking by measured Rocket League performance, so treat the word “best” in the headline as a starting point for comparison only. Vendor claims are labelled as vendor claims below.

Provider Gaming claim on vendor page WireGuard named Router setup named Rocket League-specific page
NordVPN Gaming page says a gaming VPN should keep ping low; recommends nearby servers Yes (also names NordLynx as its speed-oriented protocol) Not stated Not stated
Proton VPN Describes choosing from a wide range of servers for gaming Yes Not stated Not stated
ExpressVPN Markets a gaming use case Not stated Yes Not stated
Surfshark Gaming material discusses VPN performance Yes Yes Not stated
Windscribe Dedicated Rocket League VPN page Not stated (describes several protocols; names not stated) Yes Yes

1. NordVPN

NordVPN’s gaming page says a VPN may find a cleaner route when an ISP path is unstable or congested, and it recommends nearby servers. Check whether it offers a server close to the Rocket League region you want. The “cleaner route” wording is the vendor’s own, and NordVPN’s pages do not show a Rocket League ping result.

How to test a VPN fairly

A single ping reading cannot justify a subscription, and no test named in this article should be read as a verdict on any provider. If you want to know whether a VPN helps your connection, use this method:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Record your platform (PC, or the specific console), home location, and ISP.
  2. In Regions, select the region you want to play in, and note the selection.
  3. Measure the direct connection across several sessions at different times of day. This is your baseline.
  4. Connect to a VPN endpoint near that region, and record the provider, endpoint location, and protocol (for example, WireGuard, if the app offers it).
  5. Repeat sessions in the same time windows, and note any connection indicator events.
  6. Compare consistency first: packet loss, latency variation, and disconnections matter as much as the average ping.

Keep the VPN only if it matches or beats the direct baseline in your own sessions. If it does not, the direct connection with the selected region is the better configuration.

Console and router setups

  • PC: a VPN app on the PC changes the route for that machine only. Test it with the steps above.
  • Console: router-level setups are the approach Surfshark, ExpressVPN, and Windscribe describe. A VPN on the router affects every device connected through it, so a slow endpoint will slow those devices too.
  • Wired connection: the Ethernet step in Epic’s troubleshooting still applies when you add a VPN. A VPN does not replace a stable physical link.

Confirm the router and console combination with each provider’s setup documentation before subscribing.
