For AT&T wireless, public Wi-Fi, or home internet, a third-party consumer VPN app can add an encrypted connection between your device and the VPN service. AT&T says its public Wi-Fi network supports secure VPN access, but that is not a certification of any particular provider or a guarantee that every app works on every device. The available evidence supports a shortlist of five services to investigate—not a verified ranking of the fastest or best VPNs on AT&T.
This guide is about consumer VPN subscriptions, not AT&T’s separate enterprise networking service. Provider features below are based on each provider’s published descriptions; no controlled speed tests over AT&T were established.
What an AT&T customer should look for in a VPN
Choose for the connection you actually use: cellular data, AT&T public Wi-Fi, or home internet. A VPN app connects a supported device to the provider’s VPN service; it does not make the underlying AT&T connection faster, and performance can vary with your device, location, network conditions, VPN server, and protocol.

Likewise, a provider’s feature page is evidence of what that provider says its product offers—not an independent measurement of speed, battery use, or reliability.

Useful questions to ask before subscribing include:
- Does the provider offer an app for your specific phone, computer, or other device?
- Can it reconnect appropriately when your device moves between Wi-Fi and mobile data?
- Which protocols are available on your operating system, and what happens if a connection method is blocked?
- What does the privacy policy promise, and is any independent assessment available with a clearly stated scope and date?
- What are the current US price, renewal price, device limit, refund terms, and support options? These details are not established here and should be checked on the current plan page.
Five VPNs to consider for AT&T connections
The options below are a practical shortlist based on the available provider information. Their order is not a performance ranking. No comparable AT&T speed results or verified current plan terms are available here, so choose based on device support, the features you need, and terms confirmed directly with each provider.

How to choose between the shortlist
If you want automatic protocol selection
Proton VPN says Smart Protocol can select a connection method automatically and lists WireGuard and OpenVPN among its options. Check the provider’s current documentation for availability on your operating system; the feature description alone does not establish identical support on every device.
If you switch between cellular and Wi-Fi
ExpressVPN describes switching between Wi-Fi and mobile networks as a feature of its service. That is a useful point to investigate if you move between network types, but it does not establish seamless behavior on your particular AT&T device or measured battery life.

If you are considering the other three services
The available AT&T-specific comparison names NordVPN, Private Internet Access, and CyberGhost VPN, but its methods and results were not sufficiently established here. Treat the listing as a starting point, not proof that any one is faster or better on AT&T. Confirm app availability, protocol choices, privacy documents, and current subscription terms with the providers before choosing.
Consumer VPNs, AT&T public Wi-Fi, and Wi-Fi Calling are different
A consumer VPN is intended to route a device’s internet traffic through a VPN service. AT&T Wi-Fi Calling is a separate carrier feature for making calls over Wi-Fi. AT&T’s Wi-Fi Calling guidance discusses allowing IPSec pass-through and other configuration details for that calling function; those details are not universal setup requirements for consumer VPN apps. AT&T also uses “AT&T VPN” for an enterprise networking service. That is distinct from the consumer VPN subscriptions compared in this guide. AT&T enterprise VPN
What an AT&T speed comparison would need to show
A credible provider ranking for AT&T would need comparable measurements under stated conditions. Results should identify whether the test used AT&T cellular, AT&T public Wi-Fi, or AT&T home internet; the device and location; the VPN server and protocol; the test method; and the date. A third-party page surfaced that says it evaluated speed using AT&T cell towers, but the available material does not establish enough detail to validate its methodology or results. It cannot support a speed winner here.

For the same reason, a provider’s claims about quick connections, network switching, or battery efficiency should not be treated as independently confirmed performance on AT&T. Your own results can differ with signal strength, congestion, server distance, device, and protocol.
Check these details before paying
Current prices, renewal rates, device limits, refund terms, and customer-support quality have not been verified for these providers here. Review the provider’s US plan and policy pages before subscribing, and confirm that the plan covers the devices you intend to use. If a provider offers multiple protocols or app versions, check which options are actually available for your operating system.
A VPN app is not the same as a VPN router. Router-based coverage depends on the exact AT&T gateway or other router, its configuration options, and the VPN provider’s support. Verify compatibility for the specific equipment before buying hardware; a VPN router is not required to use an app on a phone or computer.
