For a small business, a “virtual landline” usually means a hosted business phone service that provides a separate business number without requiring a traditional wired line. Some services mainly add a business number and forward calls to devices you already own; others are full phone systems with per-user numbers and team-routing features. The five options below are a shortlist, not a hands-on test or a universal ranking. Published plan details and prices can change, so confirm current terms with each provider.

What to compare before choosing a virtual landline

Start with how your business handles calls and messages, then compare the services against that workflow. A low starting price may not reflect the cost for several users, additional numbers, taxes, or fees.

  • Users and numbers: Decide whether you need one shared number, a direct number for each employee, or several local, toll-free, or vanity numbers. Check number-porting terms if you want to keep an existing number.
  • Call handling: Check for the features you will actually use, such as forwarding, extensions, ring groups, business hours, voicemail, an automated receptionist, or call queues.
  • Messaging: Verify whether business SMS or MMS is included and whether teammates can share messages or keep conversations separate.
  • Devices and integrations: Confirm support for mobile and desktop apps, desk phones, and any business tools you need to connect. Also check fax, analytics, and international-calling details where relevant.
  • Full cost: Compare pricing for your actual user count and billing term, and account for taxes, fees, and any extra-number charges.
  • Emergency calling: Review the provider’s emergency-calling capabilities and limitations for your location before relying on the service as your only business phone.

Five virtual landline providers to consider

The options below cover different needs, from a separate business number on existing devices to a broader team phone system. The available published information is more detailed for the first three; Google Voice and Quo need closer plan-level verification before you decide.

Grasshopper: a separate number on devices you already use

Grasshopper is aimed at owners who want to separate business and personal communications without adding phone hardware. Its official Grasshopper page describes local, toll-free, and vanity numbers, number porting, and desktop and mobile apps. Its homepage lists plans starting at $14 per month and unlimited users; prices and plan terms can change, so check the current offer and what it includes before signing up.

This may suit a solo owner or small operation that mainly needs a business identity and call forwarding. Compare the specific plan’s routing and messaging capabilities with your team’s needs rather than assuming it offers every feature of a full multi-user phone system.

Ooma Office: tiered plans with team-calling tools

Ooma Office publishes three plans on its virtual-number page: Essentials at $19.95, Pro at $24.95, and Pro Plus at $29.95 per user per month. The page lists features including a virtual receptionist, ring groups, a toll-free number, digital fax, and a mobile app, and describes transferring an existing number. The listed prices exclude applicable taxes and fees; verify current pricing and plan-specific feature availability before purchase.

Rank #2

RingCentral RingEX: individual user numbers and additional numbers

RingCentral’s RingEX page says its Core plan starts at $20 per user per month when billed annually, with a dedicated business number for each user. It lists additional local or toll-free numbers at $4.99 per month and says vanity-number setup has a one-time fee. The page was updated August 10, 2026, and identifies Ben Wu, Senior Manager, Product Marketing, as author and John Smith, Director, Content and Research, as reviewer. Confirm the current price, billing conditions, and vanity-number fee before ordering.

Rank #3
AT&T BL102-2 DECT 6.0 2-Handset Cordless Phone for Home with Answering Machine, Call Blocking, Caller ID Announcer, Audio Assist, Intercom, and Unsurpassed Range, Silver/Black

You can also permanently blacklist any number you want with one touch on the dedicated key on the handset. The call block directory can store up to 1,000 name and number entries. Plus, the handset announces the name of the caller, so you can decide to answer the call or block it - screening calls has never been easier
  • LARGE 2-INCH SCREEN, BIG TEXT, LIGHTED KEY PAD: High-contrast text on the extra-large 2 inch screen makes it easy to read incoming caller ID or call history records. Plus, the enlarged font and extra-large and lighted handset keypad allows for easy dialing in low-light conditions. This feature is helpful for those who are visually impaired
  • HANDSET SPEAKERPHONE, AUDIO ASSIST, INTERCOM: This cordless system has built-in full-duplex speakerphone on handset allowing both ends to speak - and be heard - at the same time for conversations that are more true to life. Also designed with useful features like Audio Assist and handset intercom to help make your daily communications enjoyable

This structure is worth examining if employees need direct numbers or the business needs more than one local or toll-free number. Calculate the cost using the actual user count and any additional numbers; do not compare the annual-billing starting price as if it were a monthly-billing offer.

Google Voice for Google Workspace: a business option to verify against your needs

Google Workspace Voice confirms that Google offers a business voice product. The available plan and pricing details are not sufficient here to make a reliable price comparison or claim specific feature differences. Before choosing it, verify current Workspace plan requirements, the Voice plan price, number availability, calling and messaging features, and the routing or integrations your business needs.

Quo, formerly OpenPhone: a shared-phone candidate

Quo has a current pricing page, but its plan details were not sufficiently verified here for a price or feature comparison. A TechRadar review dated March 10, 2026, describes Quo as a business phone platform with shared calling and messaging and notes its former OpenPhone name. Treat that as secondary context; check Quo’s own current documentation for plan features, prices, and brand wording before deciding.

Which type of service fits your business?

  • Solo owner using existing devices: Prioritize a separate business number, simple app access, and the call-forwarding workflow you need. Grasshopper’s published description specifically emphasizes existing devices and no extra phone hardware.
  • Small team sharing responsibility for calls: Compare receptionist, ring-group, and shared-message capabilities, then verify how each feature works on the plan you would buy. Ooma publishes several team-calling tools, but the plan-level details still matter.
  • Team members who need their own numbers: Include per-user numbers and the cost of extra numbers in the calculation. RingCentral says each user gets a dedicated business number on Core and lists a separate charge for additional local or toll-free numbers.
  • Business already using a productivity suite: Check whether a business voice option fits your existing accounts and workflows, but compare verified phone features and full cost rather than assuming ecosystem fit makes it the best choice.

How to make the final comparison

  1. List users and numbers. Write down the number of employees who need calling access, whether each needs a direct number, and whether you need local, toll-free, vanity, or ported numbers.
  2. Map your call flow. Note when calls should ring, who answers, what happens after hours, and whether callers need a receptionist menu, queue, or voicemail.
  3. Check messaging and devices. Confirm business texting, team access to messages, desktop or mobile apps, and desk-phone support if relevant.
  4. Calculate the full recurring cost. Use your intended user count and billing term, adding extra numbers and applicable taxes or fees. Confirm whether any setup charge is one-time.
  5. Verify critical requirements directly. Ask the provider to confirm number porting, integrations, fax, international calling, and emergency-calling details that matter to your business.

For wording that reflects a common buyer question, a Reddit post asks, “Best virtual phone number services for small businesses?” and names Google Voice, Grasshopper, OpenPhone, and RingCentral as options people were considering. That is evidence of reader terminology, not a product recommendation or verification of features.
