USB accessories can do more than carry power: some can impersonate a keyboard, expose data, or—in the case of a USB Killer—damage hardware. That does not mean malicious cables are common or that every unfamiliar cable is dangerous. The practical rule is to use accessories you trust and avoid plugging unknown USB devices into your computer or phone.

Five USB cable and dongle threats to know

These are five threat categories, not five proof that ordinary cables routinely contain implants. The first two concern device behavior and data or control; the third is designed to cause electrical damage. The last two cover risks around charging equipment and unfamiliar USB accessories.

1. O.MG-style implant cables

Hak5 describes its O.MG Cable as an ordinary-looking cable containing an implant for authorized red-team exercises and security training. Hak5 lists keystroke injection and wireless triggers; its Elite tier includes a hardware keylogger. The vendor says a dormant cable behaves as a USB 2.0 cable for data transfer and charging. These are vendor-described product capabilities, not evidence that everyday cables commonly contain implants. Hak5’s O.MG Cable page

2. BadUSB-style cables and dongles

USB device firmware can be modified so a peripheral identifies itself to a host as a different kind of device, such as a keyboard or disk. A device impersonating a keyboard may be able to send keystrokes, while a device presenting as storage can create other data risks. A 2021 WOOT paper, “BADUSB-C: Revisiting BadUSB with Type-C,” describes an experimental extension using USB Type-C features. Its findings concern the prototype and devices tested in that paper; they do not establish that every USB-C connection is vulnerable. WOOT ’21 paper

3. USB Killers

A USB Killer is a hardware-damage device, not a data-theft cable. Indiana’s Office of Technology says it sends an electrical surge that can damage internal hardware. The USBKill vendor describes its product as a high-voltage testing device and warns it can permanently damage hardware. There is no need to handle or test an unknown device to find out what it does. Indiana Office of Technology cybersecurity guidance · USBKill FAQ

4. Compromised public charging cables or stations

A USB connection may carry data as well as power. Indiana’s guidance warns that unknown cables and public charging equipment could be compromised. That makes plugging into an unfamiliar cable or USB port a potential data-security risk, not proof that public charging stations are routinely malicious. The reviewed guidance provides no prevalence figure for such attacks. Indiana Office of Technology cybersecurity guidance

5. Malicious USB drives or dropped dongles

This category is adjacent to cables rather than a cable threat: an infected USB drive or other USB accessory may be left somewhere in the hope that someone plugs it in. Indiana’s guidance warns that a USB drop could give an attacker access or control. Treat an unfamiliar thumb drive or dongle like an unknown cable: do not connect it to a personal or work device. Can a USB cable steal data or damage a phone or computer?

Potentially, but those are different risks. A malicious peripheral can pose a data or control risk if it impersonates a trusted device or uses a data connection. A USB Killer is designed to cause electrical damage. A cable that simply charges a device is not thereby malicious; the concern is whether its source and attached equipment are trustworthy, and whether the connection also carries data.

Is it safe to use a public USB charging station?

Using an unfamiliar USB port or cable involves more uncertainty than using your own trusted charger and cable. Indiana’s Office of Technology advises: “Do not plug in unknown cables or USBs into your personal devices.” When you are away from home, bring a cable you trust and a portable battery so you can avoid an unknown USB connection. Keep your device software updated as a general precaution. Indiana Office of Technology cybersecurity guidance

What does a USB data blocker do?

A data blocker is a physical adapter intended for charging-only use: according to Indiana’s guidance, it blocks data pins while allowing power. It can reduce the risk of data transfer through an unfamiliar charging port, but it is not a universal guarantee and does not make an untrusted blocker trustworthy. Buy the blocker from a source you trust. Indiana Office of Technology cybersecurity guidance

Choose a safer charging setup

Option Data transfer Best fit Important limitation
Trusted cable May support data, depending on the cable and connected devices Charging or data transfer when you trust the cable and connection Trust depends on the cable’s source; cable compatibility and charge performance vary.
Charge-only cable Designed not to transfer data Charging when you do not need a data connection Confirm that the specific cable is genuinely charge-only and compatible with your device.
USB data blocker Blocks data pins while allowing power, according to Indiana’s guidance Charging from an unfamiliar USB port when data is not needed Does not guarantee safety in every respect; the blocker itself must come from a trusted source.
Detector Depends on the specific device; do not assume it blocks data Checking for suspicious hardware when its documented function and environment fit Compatibility and detection capability depend on the product. Hak5’s search listing describes its O.MG detector as also functioning as a blocker, but its direct product page was not available to verify further details. Hak5 O.MG detector listing

There is no comparative testing or broad compatibility result established here for these options. If you need file transfer, use a trusted cable and device. If you only need power at an unfamiliar USB port, a trusted data blocker or your own wall charger and cable is the more relevant choice.
