Some of the 1970s’ oddest-looking cars have since found an audience among collectors—but “serious cash” depends on the exact car, its condition, and the sale. The evidence available supports one detailed current value example, the AMC Pacer, while identifying several other period oddballs as candidates rather than proving a five-car price ranking. Here are five notable models, with that distinction made clear.

What “unpopular” means for these 1970s cars

A 1999 Los Angeles Times retrospective called the Pinto and several contemporaries “oddballs,” including the AMC Gremlin and Pacer, Ford Maverick and Torino, Chevrolet Vega, and Oldsmobile Omega. It described emerging collector attention but cautioned that these cars did not command high prices and accounted for only a tiny share of the collector market at that time.

That history supports calling these cars unconventional or overlooked; it does not establish that each was universally unpopular when new, or that all now sell for high prices. The five below are an editorial selection from that period group, not a measured ranking of the least popular cars or a guarantee of present-day returns.

Five 1970s oddballs collectors may encounter

1. AMC Pacer

The Pacer is the strongest documented example here. Hagerty describes a car criticized for its unconventional appearance after its 1975 introduction and later rediscovered by collectors. Its design aimed to provide generous interior space within compact exterior dimensions while meeting efficiency regulations; production ended in 1980. See Hagerty’s 1978 Pacer D/L valuation listing.

Hagerty’s October 2026 guide lists a 1978 Pacer D/L in #3 Good condition at $8,033–$12,133 and reports a 16.5% annual change for that listing. This is a condition-specific guide estimate, not a sale price or a valuation for every Pacer.

2. AMC Gremlin

The Gremlin shared AMC’s taste for unconventional compact cars, and it appears among the “oddballs” in the 1999 Los Angeles Times retrospective. Hagerty reports that, after AMC introduced the Pacer in 1975, Gremlin sales fell to 56,000 while more than 90,000 buyers chose the Pacer. That comparison describes the competition between the two models following the Pacer’s launch; it is not a full production-run popularity measure for the Gremlin. No comparable current Gremlin valuation is established here.

3. Ford Maverick

The Maverick was another model the 1999 retrospective grouped with the period’s oddballs. That source is useful for its historical framing, but it does not establish a current Maverick price or show that every version has become a high-value collectible.

4. Chevrolet Vega

The Vega also appeared in the retrospective’s list of unusual contemporaries. Its inclusion supports a case for period oddball status and later collector attention, not a specific present-day value. A price would need to be tied to the Vega’s year, trim, body style, condition, and sale evidence.

5. Oldsmobile Omega

The Omega rounds out the group named by the Los Angeles Times. The available evidence does not supply a current guide estimate or completed-sale comparison for it, so it would be misleading to attach a dollar figure or imply that it routinely sells for substantial money.

Why a Pacer’s sale price can differ so much

Hagerty’s recorded Pacer sales illustrate why a guide estimate and a completed sale should not be treated as interchangeable. Its examples include a 1977 D/L wagon sold for $9,660 on July 2, 2026; a 1979 D/L hatchback sold for $6,650 on June 24, 2026; a 1975 D/L sedan sold for $23,100 on May 18, 2026; and a 1979 D/L hatchback sold at Mecum for $40,700 on September 21, 2025. These are different cars, body styles, years, and sale circumstances—not a typical-price range for all Pacers. The sales are listed in Hagerty’s Pacer valuation and sales records.

Hagerty’s valuation guidance says: “Factors like low mileage, full documentation, overall condition, rarity, and significant modifications can all greatly affect a collector vehicle’s value.” Its broader list also includes originality, inventory, demand, and market direction. When comparing cars, match model year and trim, body style, engine, condition, originality, mileage, documentation, and modifications; identify whether the figure is a guide estimate or a completed sale.
