Apple has not announced an M6 iMac. As of October 2026, an August report says Apple is preparing an updated 24-inch iMac with an M6 chip and new colors before the end of the year, but those details remain rumors—not confirmed specifications. Here are five sensible upgrades to hope for, alongside what is actually known about the next model and the M4 iMac available today.
What will the M6 iMac actually change?
There is no confirmed M6 feature list to compare against a wish list. In August 2026, MacRumors reported, citing Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, that Apple was preparing a refreshed 24-inch iMac with an M6 chip and new colors, expected before the end of 2026. That report said the color names were unknown and major design changes were not expected (MacRumors, August 2026).
A July 2026 report had been less certain about the processor, saying the reporting it summarized did not specify whether the iMac would use M5 or M6. It also described OLED as a possibility for a later iMac, not the imminent refresh (MacRumors, July 2026). Forecasts can shift; neither report is an Apple announcement. The five ideas below are editorial hopes, not a documented personal wish list or leaked features.
1. A meaningful chip upgrade, not just a new name
What I’d want
I’d want the M6 to make demanding work—such as large photo edits, video projects, and multitasking—noticeably smoother while keeping everyday tasks fast and quiet. A generation label alone does not tell buyers how much faster a particular iMac will feel, and no M6 performance measurements or Apple claims are available yet.

What is known
The August 2026 report points to an M6 chip, but Apple has not confirmed it or published performance data for an M6 iMac. The useful measured baseline is Apple’s claim for the M4 iMac: at its October 2024 announcement, Apple said it was up to 1.7 times faster for daily productivity and up to 2.1 times faster for demanding workflows such as photo editing and gaming, compared with an iMac with M1. Those are Apple’s M4 launch comparisons, not independent tests or a forecast for M6 (Apple’s October 2024 announcement).
2. A larger or more advanced display
What I’d want
A bigger screen or a clear display-technology upgrade would give the all-in-one a stronger reason to replace an older desktop. For many users, though, sharp text, accurate color, and comfortable brightness matter more than a headline-grabbing panel change.
What is known
The current M4 iMac has a 24-inch-class 4.5K Retina LCD display: Apple lists 4480-by-2520 resolution, 218 pixels per inch, 500 nits, P3 wide color, and True Tone. Its actual diagonal measurement is 23.5 inches, and nano-texture glass is configurable (Apple iMac technical specifications). The cited August report does not point to a major redesign, while the July report puts OLED further in the future. Neither establishes a screen upgrade for the M6 refresh.

What I’d want
I’d welcome new colors if Apple keeps the distinctive, compact all-in-one shape and offers options that suit both home and office spaces. Color is a personal choice, so new shades would be a welcome choice rather than a reason for most M4 owners to upgrade.

What is known
The August 2026 report says new colors are expected but does not name them; it also says major chassis changes are not expected. Apple’s M4-era palette comprises blue, purple, pink, orange, yellow, green, and silver (Apple’s October 2024 announcement). There is no confirmation that any of those colors will carry over or that the M6 will add particular shades.
4. More useful ports and external-display support
What I’d want
I’d want every configuration to offer enough fast ports for everyday accessories and a clear path to add external screens. Buyers should not have to assume that a port count or monitor capability from one configuration carries over to another—or to the next generation.
What is known
The M4 iMac’s capabilities depend on configuration. Apple’s specifications distinguish a two-port model, which supports one external display up to 6K at 60Hz, from a four-port model, which supports either two external displays up to 6K or one up to 8K at 60Hz. The four-port M4 configuration has four Thunderbolt 4 ports (Apple’s M4 iMac technical specifications). No cited source establishes M6 port counts or external-display support.

5. A price and release window that make waiting worthwhile
What I’d want
I’d want a useful performance or capability gain without a price increase that makes the refresh hard to justify. Until Apple confirms the model and price, the practical question is whether an iMac is needed now or whether waiting is comfortable.

What is known
Apple listed a US starting price of $1,299 when it announced the M4 iMac in October 2024, with availability beginning November 8, 2024; that is historical launch pricing, not a current quote (Apple’s October 2024 announcement). MacRumors reported a US starting price of $1,499 for the iMac after Mac price increases in July 2026 (MacRumors, July 2026). Check Apple’s live price for your region before buying. Neither figure establishes what an M6 iMac will cost.
The August report’s “before the end of 2026” timing is an expectation, not a confirmed release date. The reviewed reporting does not establish M6 configurations, memory or storage options, exact colors, screen changes, or port specifications.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you buy an M4 iMac or wait?
- Choose an M4 iMac now if you need a desktop and its current screen, performance, and configuration meet your requirements. Use Apple’s current specifications to check the exact model’s ports and external-display support.
- Consider waiting if your purchase is flexible and you want Apple to confirm whether an M6 refresh is coming, what it changes, and what it costs. A rumor alone cannot tell you whether the wait will pay off.
Base the decision on the work you do, the display you need, the ports and external screens you use, and the price you can verify today—not on an unconfirmed chip name or color forecast.
