Five brands challenge Apple in smartphones, but they do so in different ways: Samsung, Huawei, Xiaomi and OnePlus compete with iPhone hardware in premium segments, while Google also competes through Android, the platform used by many phone makers. The strongest challenger depends on where you live and whether you mean worldwide shipments, a particular market, or the broader phone ecosystem.
How these brands compete with Apple
Apple’s smartphone business combines iPhone hardware with iOS and its services. The main Android challenge is more distributed: Google develops Android, while several manufacturers build phones around it. In a UK market study, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) described Apple and Google as central mobile ecosystem providers, and noted network effects around app users and developers. It also identified barriers to switching between iOS and Android, including moving data, apps and subscriptions. The five brands below are a practical selection, not an official ranking. The CMA report records Apple identifying Samsung and Huawei as specific premium-segment competitors, and Xiaomi and OnePlus as strong recent entrants with high-end devices. Google belongs on the list for a different reason: it makes Pixel phones, but its wider competitive role comes from Android.
Which five brands are trying to compete with Apple?
1. Samsung
Samsung is Apple’s most direct large-scale hardware rival among the brands covered here. It sells phones across multiple price tiers, including premium devices intended to compete for buyers considering an iPhone. IDC’s worldwide smartphone shipment table for Q2 2026 puts Samsung first among listed vendors, with 62.7 million units shipped and 22.7% share, up 8.1% year over year. Apple shipped 55.7 million units for 20.2% share in the same period. These are worldwide shipment figures, not revenue, installed base, user preference or proof that Samsung leads in every country. 2. Google
Google competes on two levels: Android is the principal licensable mobile operating system, and Pixel is Google’s first-party phone line. That makes Google a platform competitor as well as a hardware maker, unlike manufacturers whose role is primarily building Android devices. Google describes Pixel as part of an integrated, vertically developed technology stack; that is the company’s positioning, not independent evidence that Pixel is superior. 3. Huawei
Huawei is a premium-segment competitor, but its strength varies substantially by geography. In mainland China, Omdia says Huawei led smartphone shipments in Q2 2026 with 23% share, ahead of Apple at 19%. Omdia points to product launches, stable pricing, premium demand, research and development capability, and domestic supply-chain alignment as factors in Huawei’s performance. IDC separately reported Huawei’s worldwide shipments grew 19.9% year over year in Q2 2026, but that growth rate does not mean it had the same share or availability in every region. 4. Xiaomi
Xiaomi competes across price tiers and has entered the high-end segment, which is why the CMA report includes it among Apple’s strong recent entrants. IDC ranked Xiaomi third in worldwide Q2 2026 shipments, at 31.2 million units and 11.3% share, but reported a 26.4% year-over-year decline. Omdia ranked Xiaomi fifth in mainland China in the same quarter, with 12% share. The difference underlines why a market position needs its geography and period: global shipments and a China-only ranking answer different questions. OnePlus is included as a premium challenger because the CMA report identifies it as a strong recent entrant with high-end devices. The Q2 2026 China figures do not give OnePlus a separate share: Omdia groups it with realme under OPPO, which had 16% of mainland China shipments. That bundled figure cannot be treated as OnePlus’s standalone share, and the available figures do not establish a current standalone worldwide ranking for the brand.

Shipment share is a snapshot of phones shipped during a period; it is not the percentage of people using a brand, revenue share, satisfaction or product quality. The table compares only figures reported for Q2 2026, with the geography shown for each source.

Which brand is the closest Apple competitor?
There is no single answer without defining the comparison. Samsung is the clearest large-scale premium phone rival in the worldwide shipment data cited here. Huawei is a particularly strong competitor in mainland China. Xiaomi and OnePlus are relevant premium challengers, but the supplied figures do not establish a current standalone global OnePlus ranking, and Xiaomi’s position differs between the worldwide and China tables. Google competes most broadly through Android, while Pixel is its own phone portfolio; the available figures do not show Pixel shipments at a level directly comparable with the largest vendors.

A brand-level market position cannot tell you whether an individual phone will suit you. Android devices cover a wider range of price segments than Apple’s iOS devices, and the CMA notes that the two ecosystems are not perfect substitutes. Before switching, assess the specific model and the services you rely on.

- Switching effort: Account for the time and friction involved in transferring photos, messages, files, app data and subscriptions between iOS and Android.
- Model-level trade-offs: Compare local price, software-support policy, camera, battery, display and warranty for the exact phones you are considering. Brand-level shipment data does not establish those qualities.
- Regional fit: Confirm the phone is sold and supported where you live, and verify local software and service compatibility—especially when considering Huawei.
