Visual or audio oddities can be reasons to investigate a video, but none proves it is an AI deepfake. Check the clip’s source, context and provenance instead of relying on one suspicious frame or an AI-detection result.

Five signs that warrant a closer look

These are possible warning signs, not a validated checklist. Ordinary editing, compression, poor recording conditions and production choices can also cause anomalies. Neither the FBI nor Google guidance establishes a universal accuracy rate for judging a clip by appearance.

1. Warping or visual distortion

Watch whether parts of a face or image blur, bend or change unnaturally between frames. The FBI’s AI guidance lists visual distortion and warping as possible clues, not definitive tests.

2. Lighting, shadows or color that do not fit

A face or object may seem lit differently from its surroundings, or shadows and colors may shift inconsistently. Both the FBI and Google’s guidance on verifying AI-generated media identify inconsistent lighting or shadows as potential artifacts.

3. Fine details that break down

Inspect small features such as hands, teeth, background elements and text. Garbled text or details that change from frame to frame may justify closer scrutiny, but they can also result from low resolution, compression or ordinary image defects.

4. Mechanical repetition in patterns

Look for textures or background details that seem to repeat unnaturally. Repetition can be a clue, but it does not identify the cause by itself.

5. Audio that does not sound natural in context

Listen for choppy sentences, unnatural pauses, odd inflections or phrasing, changes in voice pitch, or background noise that does not fit the scene. The FBI lists these as possible synthetic-audio clues. A mismatch between sound and image is a reason to check further, not proof that the video is fake.

How to check a suspicious video quickly

1. Trace the clip to an earlier or fuller source

Search distinctive frames or the main subject and claim to look for an earlier upload, a longer version or a reliable original. Google recommends reverse image search for finding original or similar images; with video, you can try representative frames. Then check the uploader, date, location and surrounding context independently. Finding—or not finding—a match is not a verdict.

2. Look for independent corroboration

Check whether reputable news organizations, or the people and organizations supposedly involved, have published the same footage or addressed the claim. Compare the full context rather than relying on a short repost. Corroboration is a verification practice, not a mechanical proof that footage is authentic.

3. Check provenance if you have the original file

If available, inspect the original file’s metadata and look for Content Credentials in a supported product or format. Credentials can record information about origin, edits and AI involvement, but use is optional and histories can be incomplete. Missing credentials do not establish that a video is fake. The C2PA Content Credentials explainer, specification 2.2, says credentials do not judge whether content is true; they describe provenance information and whether it is well-formed, valid and trusted.

4. Treat AI-tool results as narrow evidence

Google’s Gemini verification feature checks for SynthID watermarks in content generated or edited by Google AI models. A result that finds no watermark does not rule out content made by other AI systems. Content Credentials checks likewise depend on compatible file and product support. Google’s Gemini help page lists an approximate rolling 24-hour quota of 10 image checks, 10 video checks totaling up to 5 minutes, and 10 audio checks totaling up to 3 hours. These are product-specific limits and may change.

5. Separate a file’s history from the truth of its scene

Provenance may help show where a file came from and what edits are recorded. It cannot, by itself, establish that the scene happened as presented or that the clip’s accompanying claim is accurate. C2PA describes Content Credentials as one part of a broader approach that includes media literacy and fact-checking.

What the checks can—and cannot—tell you

Method What it can help establish What it cannot establish What it depends on
Visual and audio inspection Whether the clip has possible artifacts worth investigating. Whether AI created the clip or whether its claim is true. The viewer’s judgment; artifacts can have other causes.
Reverse image search and corroboration Whether similar frames or fuller versions exist, and whether independent sources support the context. Authenticity solely from a match or lack of a match. Searchable copies and independent reporting or statements.
Google SynthID verification Whether the tool detects a SynthID watermark associated with Google AI-generated or edited content. Whether content without a detected watermark was made without AI, including by other providers. Google’s model scope and tool coverage.
Content Credentials Available provenance information, such as origin or recorded edits. Whether a scene is true, or whether a complete history exists. A compatible file or product and credentials that were added and preserved.

Use legal context carefully

The European Commission’s Article 50 FAQ discusses deepfakes, machine-readable marking and disclosure obligations in the EU AI Act context. Those obligations are jurisdiction-specific; do not assume they apply globally or infer a clip’s authenticity from legal requirements alone.
