For Comcast/Xfinity cable internet, a standalone router connects to a compatible cable modem or to an Xfinity gateway placed in Bridge Mode; the router does not replace a DOCSIS modem. Five feature-based options worth comparing are the TP-Link Archer BE550, TP-Link Deco BE63 mesh system, NETGEAR Nighthawk RS300, ASUS RT-BE88U, and eero Max 7. Choose by your home’s layout, wired-port needs, and internet plan—not by Wi-Fi generation alone.
Before buying, check your address and subscribed speed tier in Xfinity My Device Info. Xfinity says a standard router compatible with your speed tier can be used, but each listed router is a router, not a cable modem.
What to check before choosing a Comcast/Xfinity router
- Identify your connection setup. With ordinary Xfinity cable service, you generally need a DOCSIS modem plus a separate router, or a combined Xfinity Wireless Gateway. Most modems do not provide Wi-Fi by themselves; a leased Xfinity Wireless Gateway combines modem and router functions.
- Confirm speed-tier compatibility. Xfinity recommends checking its My Device Info results, which can be personalized by signing in or entering your address. That check is especially important if you also need to buy a modem; a router’s Wi-Fi generation or Ethernet ports do not establish that a modem is approved for your service.
- Account for the entire connection path. Usable speed depends on your internet plan, modem or gateway, Ethernet links, and client devices. A port rated above your plan cannot increase the speed Xfinity delivers, and product-page wireless maximums are specifications—not promises of real-world throughput.
- Decide whether you want one router or mesh. A standalone router is one access point. Mesh uses multiple access points to distribute Wi-Fi, but the product page alone cannot predict coverage in a particular home.

TP-Link Archer BE550: multi-gig ports on a standalone router
TP-Link specifies one 2.5 Gbps WAN port and four 2.5 Gbps LAN ports, and lists EasyMesh compatibility. That port layout is useful if you expect to connect several wired devices at multi-gig speeds. Check the Archer BE550 specifications against your modem, plan, and wired devices before paying extra for capacity you may not use.

TP-Link Deco BE63: mesh rather than a single access point
TP-Link describes the Deco BE63 as a whole-home Wi-Fi 7 mesh system and says it works with any internet provider. Its mesh format is the distinguishing reason to consider it when you want access points distributed around the home. The product description does not establish coverage for a specific floor plan, so placement and building materials still matter. See the Deco BE63 product information for its configuration details.
NETGEAR Nighthawk RS300: mixed multi-gig and gigabit ports
NETGEAR lists a 2.5 Gbps internet port, two 2.5 Gbps LAN ports, and two gigabit LAN ports on this standalone tri-band Wi-Fi 7 router. That mix can fit a household with a multi-gig connection and a combination of faster and standard wired devices. The RS300 specifications do not establish how it will perform in a particular home.

ASUS lists a 10 Gbps WAN/LAN port, a 10 Gbps SFP+ port, a 2.5 Gbps WAN/LAN port, three 2.5 Gbps LAN ports, and four gigabit LAN ports, plus AiMesh support. This is the connectivity-focused option in this group; those ports are not a requirement for most Xfinity households. Review the RT-BE88U specifications and ensure the WAN configuration matches your modem or other upstream equipment.

How to connect your own router to Xfinity
Using a separate modem
Connect the modem to the Xfinity cable service and connect the router’s WAN or internet port to the modem’s Ethernet port. Follow the router’s setup instructions, then connect client devices to its Wi-Fi network or LAN ports. If you do not already have a modem, verify that it is compatible with your service and speed tier using My Device Info; the router candidates above do not supply DOCSIS cable-modem functionality.
Using an Xfinity Wireless Gateway
If you connect a personal router to an Xfinity Wireless Gateway, Xfinity instructs customers to enable Bridge Mode. This disables the gateway’s routing function while keeping its modem operation active. Xfinity states that only one device can be connected to the gateway while Bridge Mode is on. Follow the current Bridge Mode instructions for your gateway; do not leave both gateway routing and personal-router routing active unless you have a specific network configuration in mind.

- Multi‑Gig speed for today & tomorrow: DOCSIS 3.1 performance supports cable internet plans up to 2 Gbps, delivering ultra‑fast streaming, gaming, and downloads.
- Save on rental fees: Own your modem and avoid monthly equipment charges—check with your cable provider for plan compatibility.
- Compact, modern design: Space‑saving footprint with discrete LED indicators for power, upstream/downstream, and online status.
- Easy setup: Connect cable, power on, and activate with your cable provider. Then connect a Wi‑Fi router to the Ethernet port for home Wi-Fi coverage.
- Modem only: This cable modem requires a separate Wi-Fi router or mesh system for home Wi-Fi network.
Fiber/EPON exception
Some Xfinity community customers with fiber/EPON service may be eligible to connect a third-party Ethernet router directly to an ONU, subject to eligibility and speed-tier capability. This is a specific exception, not the normal setup for cable customers. Check Xfinity’s router guidance for that service and confirm that it applies to your account.

- Several wired multi-gig devices: Compare the Archer BE550’s four 2.5 Gbps LAN ports with the ASUS RT-BE88U or eero Max 7 if you need faster or more varied wired connections.
- More than one Wi-Fi access point: Consider the Deco BE63’s mesh form factor, while treating coverage as dependent on your home and node placement.
- A mix of wired device speeds: The RS300’s two 2.5 Gbps and two gigabit LAN ports make its mix explicit; choose based on the devices you will actually connect.
- Standard broadband and everyday Wi-Fi: You may not benefit from multi-gig ports if your plan, modem, and wired devices are limited to lower speeds. Prioritize Xfinity compatibility, reliable placement, and the needs of your clients.
For Xfinity’s current equipment overview, the company describes its XB10 gateway as combining DOCSIS 4.0 with Wi-Fi 7. That context does not certify any third-party router as a cable modem or establish account-specific compatibility for these models; use Xfinity’s gateway information and My Device Info for your own service details.
