If your TV still has a good picture but its menus or apps feel sluggish, try the free fixes first: restart it, finish any available updates, clear the cache for a troublesome app, and remove apps you no longer use. If the TV’s built-in streaming platform remains the bottleneck, an HDMI streaming player can take over the apps while the TV continues to display the picture. Buffering calls for a network check, not a faster menu setting.

First, identify what feels slow

Different symptoms point to different fixes. Slow menus and apps suggest a software or hardware limitation in the TV. Buffering, stalled playback, or a drop in video quality points more toward the network connection. If the picture looks unnaturally smooth, adjust motion settings rather than trying to speed up the interface.

1. Restart the TV and let updates finish

A restart is a sensible first step when the interface has become unresponsive or sluggish. Then check for available system and app updates. Menu labels vary by brand and model; look for Software Update, System Update, About, or Support.

Google TV update path

On Google TV, Google documents this route: Settings → System → About → System update. Let system and app updates complete before judging performance. Google notes that a TV may run more slowly while app updates are underway, so an update in progress can temporarily make the interface feel worse.

2. Clear the cache for a troublesome app

If one streaming app is slow or behaving erratically, clear that app’s cache if your TV provides the option. On the cited TCL Google TV flow, go to Settings → Apps → See all apps → [app] → Clear cache. The app may need to load some data again the next time you open it.

3. Remove apps you no longer use

Uninstalling unused apps is a straightforward way to reduce clutter and reclaim storage where the TV allows it. Keep the apps you use, remove the ones you do not, and restart the TV afterward if it still feels bogged down. The exact route for removing an app depends on the TV platform; check its Apps or app-management settings.

4. Use Ethernet when the problem is streaming stability

A wired connection may help if videos buffer, stall, or fall to a lower resolution and the TV has a usable Ethernet port. It can avoid weak Wi-Fi reception or wireless hardware limitations. It will not make a slow TV menu or underpowered processor faster.

On a Google TV, TCL documents wired-network setup in its Google TV troubleshooting guidance. Before routing a cable, consider whether the TV has an Ethernet port and whether a cable run is practical in your room.

5. Reorganize the home screen

Move your most-used apps near the front of the home screen and hide or move unwanted tiles if your TV’s platform permits it. This makes the interface easier to navigate and can make a familiar TV feel fresher, but it is not a guaranteed processing-speed improvement. Organization controls vary by brand and model.

When the built-in smart platform is the bottleneck, add a streaming player

If the screen and HDMI inputs still work well but the TV’s built-in menus and apps are outdated or persistently sluggish, an external streaming player is the clearest hardware alternative. It connects to HDMI and runs the streaming apps; the TV displays the resulting picture. Confirm that you have a usable HDMI input and that the player supports the apps you need before buying.

Choose by supported apps, interface preference, remote and voice controls, and compatibility with your TV—not by assuming one platform is best. Tom’s Guide reported a typical streaming-device range of $30–$150 in its March 6, 2026 article, depending on features; that is a general publisher estimate, not a live price check. Confirm current models and prices before purchase. See Tom’s Guide’s five-change guide.

Optional: adjust motion settings if films look too smooth

Motion smoothing is a picture preference, not a speed fix. If films look unnaturally fluid, try a Movie or Filmmaker picture mode, or reduce the TV’s motion processing. Samsung’s controls may appear under Auto Motion Plus or Picture Clarity, depending on the model. Samsung says, “Most movies, however, are filmed at 24 frames per second and are not intended to be viewed with these features.” Some viewers still prefer motion smoothing for sports or other fast action, so choose the setting that looks right to you. See Samsung’s explanation of motion smoothing and the soap opera effect.

What to try first

  1. Slow menus or apps: restart the TV, finish pending updates, clear cache for the affected app if available, and remove apps you no longer use.
  2. Buffering or unstable playback: check the network connection; try Ethernet if the TV has a port and a cable run is practical.
  3. Persistently sluggish built-in apps: consider an HDMI streaming player after checking input and app compatibility.
  4. Overly smooth-looking films: adjust motion settings to suit your preference.
