A 3D printer can do more than deposit filament—but the options depend on the machine. A typical filament printer is not automatically a plotter, laser engraver, or CNC mill. The realistic paths are a carefully configured pen conversion, or dedicated laser and CNC modules on a machine designed to support them.
1. Convert an FFF printer into a pen plotter
An FFF printer moves its printhead along programmed paths, so a mounted pen can use that motion to draw or write on a flat surface. With a suitable holder and configured toolpaths, you could make a line-art card or draw a simple diagram.
This is a DIY conversion, not a standard mode on ordinary filament printers. A University of Lapland thesis notes that FFF printers can be converted for plotter work but are not ideal platforms because their motion characteristics are optimized for a different task. On a compatible modular machine, a dedicated laser module can add engraving and cutting as a separate tool mode. Snapmaker documents laser functions for supported Snapmaker 2.0 and Artisan systems; this is not a general capability of an ordinary filament printer. Laser work has its own operating and safety requirements. Follow the manual and safety instructions for the exact machine and module; the cited product pages alone are not a substitute for them.
3. Carve with a compatible CNC module
On a compatible modular machine, a dedicated CNC module can perform supported carving or cutting tasks. Unlike filament printing, CNC work removes material with a tool. Snapmaker documents this function for supported systems, including the 2.0 and Artisan. It should not be treated as a generic drill attachment that can safely be fitted to any printer. 4. Use one supported machine for several fabrication modes
A supported 3-in-1 system can bring 3D printing, laser work, and CNC work into one workspace by changing between dedicated modules. Snapmaker describes modular toolheads and a quick-swap workflow for its product family. This can consolidate equipment, but the available evidence does not establish that one modular machine is cheaper, faster, or as capable as separate dedicated machines. 5. Check support before adapting or expanding a printer
Model compatibility is the first practical question—not which accessory looks adaptable. Identify the exact printer model, then check whether its manufacturer documents support for the tool or conversion you want. For a typical FFF printer, pen plotting is the conversion supported by the sources here, though it may require substantial configuration. The evidence does not support recommending generic laser or CNC conversions for ordinary printers.
Choosing a route

What a standard filament printer does
A typical material-extrusion printer heats filament and pushes it through a nozzle, depositing material according to a digital file.
